Well i was just checking out what the SH4 folder contains (sounds etc.)
And i found some pretty stupid things:
1. In the sound folder there is a file called "Fanfara_01" = german national anthem. WTF!
2.Stuka, BF-109, Hurricane and B-24 sounds. (No stukas, BF-109, hurricanes or B-24 in SH4)
3. "Submarine tanks blowing" and "Submarine tanks flooding" it's stupid to have these files because it's like in SH3, ingame you can't hear them!

Well done - here's a medal!

Do a bit more digging and you'll find even more unused stuff.

Consider them Easter Eggs from the dev team for those who don't have SH4.

yes, that is silly I noticed it too, I think to be able to recycle coding, they changed the sounds, but gave them the same name so that the old coding will work with it.

Heck, look in the SH3 Speech folder, and there are at least 50-100 sound files that are never used....:o

I think under careers, or campaigns i found all the textures used in campaign mode in SH3 like the desk, diagrams, and backgrounds.

Hoozah for folder digging! :ping:

CFG folder is also a bin. You can find cfg files for Type V, type IX, type XXI....what a pity. I can understand code recycling, but this is not a professionnal work guys....

Whatever, SH4 remains a great sim.

I've removed over a gig of unnecessary files (may have gained a few fps, game isnt' as choppy as before).
Haven't started a new campaign, but if anyone's interested here are the files I removed-

1. Sound files- lot's of useless stuff, pick and choose what you want to delete (or add, I used some from SH3). Also deleted radio and gramaphone wavs/ogg since I have old radio tunes burned on CD.

2. Redwine's "Increased Underwater Visibility" mod. Apparently a shading issue, but game seems to run better.

3. Intro/campaign/single mission Movie files- kept the folder and any configuration files. Game hasn't crashed yet (keep backups just in case).

Go to your Ubisoft/SH4 file and click properties, then compare the file sizes to those in SH3. :-?

All the data folder is full with sh3 stuff.
This show that on the first ideas sh4 was planed to be only an Addon for sh3. Later Ubi decided to make a stand alone game. And nobody took care to throw out all the dead and unused files.

Would it be possible for someone to make a list of whats in there from SH3 that is unused so the rest of us could delete the unnessicary files?

'Twas ever thus. The much-vaunted and admittedly superb Medieval Total War 2 is, in effect, a re-worked Rome Total War, to the point that a huge number of the files were duplicated - even the basic .cfg files have "julii" and " scippii" instead of the medieval factions. That said, a game's a game for a' that. So long as it works and we enjoy it, who cares? SH4 was not intended to be an add-on, but why re-invent the wheel?

I agree. That would be really helpful. Would it be possible to make this file deletion as a mod?

Hey, anything I can do to get a few more FPS I'm all for....

Take care when removing files. Sound files from SH3 are used for SH4, remember? Don't base your decision to delete just on the name of the file.

#3 alone is 1.39 G - and it is -NOT- going to have any effect on gameplay, or on loading beyond what you can get by defragging or skipping the movies. So I question the value of this from a gameplay perspective, if a file is not accessed it has no more impact than say my installation of MS Office does. That said, from a modding perspective, I would dearly love to have a list of unused *.cfg, *.dat, *.zon, or *.sim files ;)

Well a little off topic but how about the idiocricy of using British Bombers skinned to US flavors and flying in and out of Pearl? I guess we weren't supposed to be looking at planes but they even used SH3 items to save time.

Its cheaper, faster, and less work to just leave the crap in there.

Remove the garbage. Besides, in the meantime you can install and play SH2 Pacific Aces.

Before deleting them it would be a good idea to check dependencies.
Although i'm sure they have other priorities, it would be cool of the devs to provide a batch file taking care of unused leftovers.

Only this evening I have a great amount of "new speaky" stuff (which is great) for both a Surfacing and Diving routine....you do hear the tanks blowing. So take care my lucky lads.
I have spent the day (well almost) cleaning my system. Its seemed to make a heck of a difference to the game. Graphics, Audio, improved immensly....Dusty

The bizarre thing is, this Lancaster is not in SH3, so far as I know. It looks to be a whole new model. They went to a lot of trouble to create something totally out of place and in the wrong place at the wrong time. I seems deliberate. Maybe it was meant to be a an Easter Egg, but it's sure not hidden, like our Flying Dutchman. I can't figure it out.

Removing the unused might be a waste of time, assuming SH4.1.2 goes and puts a load of them right back in there...
