The Wahoo in her final version before being sink was all Black. Not the collor you have. Also I dont belive the Battle Flags where painted on the side.

I like that skin. Just a quick question. I read that the early war boats were painted black and around mid 43 painted grey with black from top. Is that maybe lost in translation of my books since you said that actually was vise versa?
No I'm pretty sure that they did in fact change from black later on. Logically speaking black paint beneath light blue or green water is gonna be visible.

Yes. that was they way there where painted. But the USS Wahoo had a all black hull when she was lost.

the file font link for the wahoo skin no longer works is there anywhere else i can download it at or any uss wahoo mod or other wahoo skin i have done a deep search and came up empty any help would really be appreciated thank you in advance

I'm not sure if this one will be the same, but you could try the old Kill Flags version in the Gato boat folder at:

The "SS238 Wahoo..." is about 2/3 of the way down the page. I don't know if it'll have the headdress or not.

thank you very much for your reply sadly it does not have the headdress i am very surprised that the uss wahoo for being a very historic sub that there are not mods that have it in i personally cant find any version of the uss wahoo for sh4

I have a copy of the famous "Clean Sweep" photo with the broomstick of WAHOO returning to base displaying kill flags indicating two Warships and six Maru's sunk on that patrol. 2nd title; "SHOOT THE SUN ZA B*TCHES".
Roger Paine (was XO) is conning her into port if that helps narrow the time frame down. All dark paint scheme, and the tower has been cut down so I'm pretty confident it was later in the War.
Anyway, there is no headdress displayed on her tower if you want to be historically accurate.

The headress would be found in the Data / Textures / TNormal / tex folder, so look in there... The one in the skin pack that cdrsubron7 pointed you at is painted in colors. I have no idea about the historical accuracy of the boat's display, but i'd trust aanker on that.:salute:

It was from FooFighters skins old website [ http://www.oldsmobile1958.com/silenthunter/ ]. For a while FooFighters with the help of Boris would provide skins for the major classes of fleetboats and skins with custom request kill flags (meat balls & rising suns) and battle flag mascots to apply to conning towers.

it's a "Battle Flag", hanging off the boat, along the conning tower, the colorful one is correct. I ~knew~ I'd seen it around...

Typically some of the crew would sew these impressive battle flags that displayed the mascot, kill flags, aviators rescued, recons, awards, etc.
They were not displayed while on patrol but were made and added to by the crew on the long trip home to display the boat's accomplishments as they returned to base. Often the crew would pose for photographs with their flag.
It says Morton himself designed and made the Indian head. Nice site.

That it is. I have never seen it before. From what I can tell from that site, that patrol was the only one they used that particular battle flag, and only coming into San Fran, I guess - but there's a lot to read over there... :salute:
I've known Admiral Roger Paine's son since the 60's. He's about ten years older than I am and grew up with all these famous submariners and memorabilia in the house but didn't seem interested in much of it,
LT Paine missed the last patrol because of appendicitis... lucky, lucky.

I just read that story! The navy had fumigated the boat just prior to leaving for patrol, and he and another fellow apparently got too close to the application, or ingested the poison. Both of their apendixes were removed for 'just-in-case', so they both missed that fateful cruise...

yes propbeanie i found the gato tower dds in the tex folder and enabled but the whole sub still remains just black with nothing on tower frustrating but thank you all for info and great photos

My back is paining me bad, so my worst friend insomnia is visiting... sheesh... Anyway, the skins go with the conning towers, and those are listed in the Gato.upc file like this:

so the #1 (early) tower runs until April 30th, 1942 and is "blank", like this:

The second sail, "MedWar" uses the T01 tex file from May 1 to Dec 31 1942, like this:

The LateWar goes from Jan 1, 1943 to Dec 31, 1943 using the T02 file in the tex folder like this:

and the "Elite" goes back to "blank"... In this particular skin, it is for any Gato boat, so should show up between May 1, 1942 to Dec 31, 1943. If it doesn't, be sure you have it activated with JSGME properly, and that you don't have a bad folder structure like "Game \ MODS \ SS238 USS Wahoo_FooBor's GATO Combo HI-RES \ SS238 USS Wahoo_FooBor's GATO Combo HI-RES \ Data"... You only want the one "SS238 USS Wahoo_FooBor's GATO Combo HI-RES" folder, not two of them... I should have rotated the conn around in S3D, and looked at the other side. I have no idea if it faces forward, or back, or if it's even there... :hmmm: - Edit: It is there, on both sides, and both facing forward - excellent stuff. :salute:
Of course, in the game, you should have the rest of your submarine, unless you do like I do, and get it blown out from under you all the time... :roll: :salute:

2. Where did you purchase your game from, Steam?
3. What other mod(s) are you using?
4. Do they work OK?
5. Are you putting the skin mod in last?

So, you're NOT in a "Program Files" directory of any sort, but rather, a folder you made yourself for the install. Now, look in your MODS folder, and "navigate" (fancy-talk for "double-click on") into the "SS238 USS Wahoo_FooBor's GATO Combo HI-RES" folder. Do you see another folder of the same name, or a "Data" folder?
I have FooBor's SS-238 Wahoo skin with the headdress already on NSS_GatoTower_T01.dds and NSS_GatoTower_T02.dds if this is what you need.
As you know, NSS_GatoTower_T02.dds tower is lighter than NSS_GatoTower_T01.dds, or isn't this the issue.....

Naw, he's not seeing it in game. I also was using my FotRSU install as an example earlier, and there are four conning towers in it, but only two in Stock... sigh. That skin that you have is the one that he's been pointed at already. Might just be a bad activation in his install.

well hallelujah finally got it to work i made a backup of my data and manually put the skin in game and BAM i guess JSGME was not enabling it properly anyhow im so happy i want to give a big thank you to all that helped great bunch of folks here:Kaleun_Cheers:

I didn't help, I wanted to, but couldn't figure out what the problem with JSGME was. All I could think of was to see what the JSGME 'snapshot' said, but that wouldn't have solved the problem. Glad to see you are up and running now!

Ok. i have downloaded all of them.
Some of these i already have, i'll sort them out and add to the collection.
Now do i use the Battle Flags.US as owners or FooBors ? what do you guys think ?

Man, that'd be tough... There was a Kill Flags team, and I remember reading through their thread quite a while back, and they did make a lot of skins, but I don't remember who was doing what. I'll try to read through that again later today for you s7rikeback... :salute: What did I just volunteer for?...
Yes, the Kill Flags team would customize a players tower to reflect types of ships sunk; with meatballs & rising sun flags. They may have included aviators rescued and Special missions conducted like recons etc. too. At one time they had quite an operation going.
I suppose you could do the same if you wanted that kind of display on your tower using a graphics program to add the 'kill flags'. TGA is easier to work with than DDS unless things have changed.... they usually do - lol. Paint.net is a good program and is listed in one of the stickey's (it has a different url) and can work with DDS files.
These kill flags and mascots (like the WAHOO headdress) added to the tower are not historically accurate but this is a game and if you want them displayed, go for it. The main objective is to have fun, right?
