My copy just arrived, and it's too late to fire it up tonight, so I've just spent some time examining the outside of the box and have discovered several troubling things about the packaging that I think some modders should look into. For example:

1. Nowhere on the box does it seem to actually say Silent Hunter IV - if this becomes a trend with this franchise, how confusing is this going to be down the road when the next few installments are released and we can't easily put all the boxes in numerical/chronological order on our shelves?

2. And what's with the name, anyway - "Wolves of the Pacific"? I have been reading about the US submarine forces during WWII in the Pacific for many years and do not recall ever hearing or seeing the US boats referred to as "wolves" (not saying definitively that nobody ever did so - just that I don't remember ever seeing it). Given that the bulk of the US subs seem to have been named after fish, wouldn't "Sharks of the Pacific" have been a better subtitle?

3. On the inside of the opening flap, one of the picture captions reads "Lead your convoy and join friends online in the new adversarial mode" - are they saying that it's possible to command surface ships against player subs in a sort of Destroyer Command mode? That would indeed be awesome, but I've seen nothing posted about this so far in the forum so I have to wonder if they really mean what this seems to say - if not, this wording definitely should be modded to be something more "realistic". (Could this be the seed for a new "RGB" super mod package? - Real Game Box mod :D )

4. Also on the inside of the opening flap is the statement "Hunt, hide and kill across the icy waters of the Pacific" - I'm sure that portions of the Pacific are cold, even icy at times, but based on the sea-temperature maps I've been able to locate so far (see here, for example: http://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/maproom/Global/.Ocean_Temp/.Monthly_Temp.html ),
it appears that for the most part (and especially in most of the operational areas we're likely to be patrolling) the Pacific is about as balmy as one would expect from one's typical tropical island fantasy. Seems that they could have picked a more appealing/appropriate image for this Pacific subsim than "icy waters".

I'm really hoping that the inside of the box has fewer glaring errors, and that some of you modders can at least pay some attention to fixing the packaging instead of just spending all your time making the gameplay better - after all, from what I've read on the forums so far it looks like we'll all have plenty of time to spend looking at the box during those long cruises from Pearl to reach our patrol zones when we have to go at 2x TC max to keep the Japanese aircraft from killing all our watch crew on the way out there :yep:

Yes, it's possible for one player to command the convoy escorts in a multiplayer game.

That's really cool news - thanks for wading through all my nonsense and answering the one serious point in my post :D

I never got around to trying SH3 online, but maybe once this game stabilizes and I get a few patrols under my belt it might be fun to try this multiplayer mode. I wonder if everybody will have to have the exact same mod/version to be able to do this? I always like to run lots of mods and a few of my own tweaks, so that was always an obstacle to trying to get involved in the multiplayer scene for me - once I got SH3 like I wanted it, I couldn't develop much enthusiasm for having to run a different version for multiplayer. I understand that it's real important in flight sims and twitchy first person shooters to make sure everybody has the exact same setup, but is it really that important in a game like this? I guess unless you only play with people you know real well there's always the chance someone childish will try to get some unfair advantage out of some uber-boat mod or something and spoil the game, but I'd hope the chances of that would be a lot smaller with a subsim crowd and it would be OK to play with whatever setup one normally uses for single player. Guess we'll see.
