[WIP] Old time radio entertainment station

This will be an old time radio mod. It will be frequency 38, station 'Hollywood,' playing war time comedy, drama, mystery, very little music, and very very very rarely some news programs. I would estimate Roughly 90% of the files are played within 2 weeks of their actual broadcast date.

This station will be in operation from the beginning of the war until the end. Most all of the broadcasts are made at 20:00, but not all. Nearly all shows are 30 minutes in length. A new show is played every 1 to 2 weeks roughly, with several repeats of that broadcasts during that 1 to 2 week period. A typical schedule for a broadcast is first airing Sunday, then a repeat of that show on Wednesday. That is not always the case though as some shows start their rotation on a different date or get repeated a 3rd and 4th time depending on the availabilty of material for the month. Nearly 100% of shows run at least twice. The quality of volume is very good for most shows, but there are a few of them that have low volume and will be hard to hear without headphones or turning up the volume.

After some testing to see if it's possible, I most likely plan on limiting the range of the station to just short of Japanese waters. This is up in the air though.

There are 151 radio files making up this mod so the download will be quite large. You will need close to 1 gigabyte of space to use this mod - roughly 850 MB of space. Currently I can compress the package to about 370 MB using 7-zip, or I can split them using rar into 8 parts of 100MB each.

I'm planning on uploading to filefront an initial version this weekend. Any subsequent changes would only need a new or edited txt/ini file to change the date of programs or increase/decrease the number of times a show is repeated.

After some quick testing, the first change is that shows don't need to be repeated more than once per week. It's just over kill.

And after a bit more testing, I've found repeating programs is a waste. A lot of time is spent in time compression making repeating programs not worth it. Now programs start every sunday night, except for a few special occasions like christmas and independence day.

Sometimes there's a program every sunday night, sometimes every other sunday, either way with time compression you won't have to wait very long to get a new program to start. Here's the program list

Doing some tests in game with a radio station at Los Angeles' latitude and longitude, the power portion of the radio.ini line

Antenna=01.01.1930-01.01.2000:34.05,-118.22:100000

is in nautical miles.

With my created radio station in L.A. and a power of 100, I had to sail to right off the coast within 100 miles of the the approximate latitude and longitude to tune in the station.

You'll be able to tune to the frequency when out of range, but you'll get the static noise. Once you get within range, the station will come in. Cool thing was when I tuned it in, a program already in progress was picked up. Very realistic.

A few changes before I get ready to upload this thing somewhere....I need to change the latitude and longitude to hollywood from LA, I need to put in and test a power that will feed this station to somewhere short of Japanese waters, and I might change the broadcast days from Sundays to the 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th considering there is no real way to know when sundays are in game.

Radio station hollywood version 1

!!!!!!In order for this mod to work YOU MUST EDIT YOUR radio.ini FILE!!!!!!!

!!!!!!It absolutely WILL NOT WORK if you do not edit this file!!!!!!!!!!!

Old time radio in SH4! This mod has 150 some files of old time radio from the war years. Comedy, drama, and mystery, just tune in to frequency 38, radio Hollywood, on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, or 29th of any month at 20:00. This station broadcasts for the duration of the war.

Be aware that a broadcast is not made *every* 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, or 29th all the time, but there at least 1 to 2 broadcasts per month early in the war. Later in the war, 3 to 5 broadcasts per month are made. You can check the events.ini file in the /data/sound/radio/hollywood/events folder for the exact days of broadcast if you like.

In order for this mod to be compatible with other radio station mods, you must edit your own radio.ini file so that you don't overwrite it and kill other stations you may have added. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, THIS MOD WILL NOT WORK. You can find radio.ini in /data/sound/radio. Just open it with notepad and it can be edited.

The radio station originates in Hollywood on the map and can only be heard within a range you will now set.

You have some options for the range of this radio station, only select one of these options by adding only ONE new [CHANNEL] entry to the bottom of the radio.ini file - do not add all of these options.

1. You can set it to 9000 and the radio station will be heard throughout the pacific including all of Japan and even a little bit into the Indian Ocean.

2. You can set it to 7500 and the radio station range will reach to Japan, Saipan, and just about all of New Guinea. It will not be heard to the west of this area. This will exclude western Australia and the Phillippines.

3. You can set it to 6200 and the radio station range will reach to a point just to the east of the Solomon Island chain. It also will fall short of Japan.

4. You can set it to 4300 and the radio station range will only reach just past Midway Island. This means you will only be able to hear this station when near Hawaii, Midway Island, or transiting towards the USA west coast.

5. You can set it to whatever you would like. Just edit the last number after the ':' in the Antenna= line. The number is the range the radio station will reach in nautical miles.


If you already have a radio station in the radio.ini file with Freq=38 or you want a different frequency for whatever reason, just change the Freq= number to an unused frequency.

Please be aware that if you use JSGME to install this mod, it will double the size this mod takes up on your hard drive because JSGME keeps a backup of the mod files in the mod folder. This will cause the mod to take up between 1 and 2 gigabytes of space.

If you still want to use JSGME to install this mod, you still have to edit the radio.ini yourself. THIS MOD IS LARGE!!!!! IT COULD TAKE 2 MINUTES OR MORE TO ENABLE USING JSGME!!!!! BE PATITENT!!!

If you want to do it by hand and save space, 1st make sure you have edited the radio .ini in /data/sound/radio as specified above.

2nd, place the Hollywood folder in /data/sound/radio.

That's all there is to it.

If you need to manually uninstall this mod, remove the [CHANNEL] entry you made in the radio.ini file located in /data/sound/radio and delete the Hollywood folder located in /data/sound/radio.

Now all you have to do is turn on the radio on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, or 29th and tune into frequency 38 at 20:00. Radio Hollywood

will have special broadcasts on christmas eve and christmas day and Independence day.
