View Full Version : GWX Observations and Screen Resolutions

I just finished spending some time on my first GWX patrol and still at sea. I'm based out of Wilhelmshaven in a Type VIIB. I left port and headed North of Scapa Flow on my way to AM23 for my patrol grid.

So far, I've been harrassed by numerous Anson's and later Hurricanes. My hull is down to 74% from...would you believe...machine guns! At least three times I had heavy flooding after being straffed. Once from a bomb off the port side, which wounded my flak gunner. Not sure how effective machines guns were but this seems a bit much to me.

Flak and Deck Guns

I can't man either gun. I tried hitting F10 and F11 to no avail. Does something in the GWX mod disable these? What about the screen resolution fix (see below)?

Screen resolution

I installed the Microsoft ACT 5.0 and the resolution fix. I can't really tell if it did anything. All the intro screens and F function screens look the same. I "think" the actual game screens (view of the water, planes and ships, as well as my boat and crew look sharper) but my dials still look oval.

Can anyone tell me if you can set the resolution to true 4x3 (such as 1280x960)? I tried this and the dials are still oval.

I had a shock at that too when the first few times machine guns damaged my hull. I am not sure how to restore the U-Boat to its former stock bulletproof form, I'm sure there is a way, but, hell if I know at present, quite possibly the GWX boys know how to make the boats impervious to bullets again, but they are keeping tight lipped on that score methinks. Besides I'm new to this modding malarky, I need lessons and proper instruction. I'm sure I will get more competant, probably when I am like, 30... lol

If the sea is too rough, it won't let you man the guns, besides, in my experience if you want to fight it out with aircraft you need conditions no more than 2 meters per second or fighting is useless really as the U-boat is shaking about too much. If you want to fight it out, you have to assign crew to the flak gun then man it, simply hitting F11 is not good enough. Same for the deck gun, it needs 3 crew members to function at peak.

Screen setting 1290x768 is what I use and that's near as I can tell perfect.

Machine guns were capable of damaging uboats
As the war went on the rockets caused more damage

The air cover around the UK early war is a bit heavy and has been reduced in 1.03

You can use your Flak guns up to 11ms wind but that figure drops depending on rain and fog
You will still have to have the guns manned first - as always - unless you click on the pop up box to engage aircraft

I was also surprised the first time I played GWX and while running on the surface I got attacked by a small torpedo boat's machine gun. Which really caused some damage compared to vanilla SH3.:damn: But at least that's a bit more realistic than being impregnable from bullets.:yep:

Those of you who play GWX, are any of you taking up a fight against attacking aircrafts?:hmm: I for one rather dive to safety than risking my crews lives.;)

I engaged an Elco this morning on the surface in v1.03 and the little brute wiped out 4 consecutive deck gun crews before I could destroy it :damn:

Sorry I forget to mention...I had 0 winds, calm seas, deck gun and flak guns manned. I cannot man either gun. I get no message about anything nor should I under those conditions. Something's wrong here. Also, since posting this thread, I've discovered I can't go to the Radio Room using F9 either.

If machine guns can do that much damage, then it's pointless to even bother trying to defend yourself against aircraft. Looks like lots of crash dives are in store.

Okay, I just did an experiment. I deleted the files and database used to increase screen resolution and went back to my patrol. All function keys work and I can man the guns. I reinstalled the files and database and they are not working again.

Looks like a bug to me. This sim don't look so good on an LCD monitor. Too bad the whole world is buying these things (or being forced to) instead of CRT's. People don't realize every time they purchase something, anything, they are giving it their approval (just like voting in politics). If I had my choice, I'd use a CRT but you can't get them anymore...really stupid of the manufacturers if you ask me. You'd think they'd appreciate the fact that some people want a CRT...particularly gamers.

Hopefully SED TV technology will make it's way to computer monitors but I'll probably be in my grave by then.

Update! I just read through the web page that instructs you on using the high resolution fix. Can't believe I missed this but it says right there how it disables several of the F keys, including F9, F10, F11, and some others.

Damn! I guess I'm SOL.

A final post here. After thinking about it, it makes sense to use the resolution fix and forget about the lost function keys. I can still man the flak guns via their independent keys but will have to rely on the crew to use the deck gun. I'll miss that but realize after the early years, it's not going to play a major role in combat operations anyway.

Maybe the developers will surprise us with an upgrade to SH3 graphics when they release SH4. That would be sweet.

I remember a discussion about merging SH3 + 4 IL4-Series-like in the SH4-Forums. My personal dream.:up:
