Quoting (as suggested by Safekeeper and addedd by Drebbel)
Just some back-seat moderation, if I may: Could everyone be so kind as to not quote posts containing pictures? It clutters up the thread and makes it take longer to load.

A request if I may - please post some screenshots that DON'T feature a sub surfacing in front of the main formation of the IJN Combined Fleet.
Those with the retail version - I'd be glad for any updates, but I'm now especially interested in the ships.

Instead of just hitting the 'Quote' button, type something like 'I love how you can apparently just click an icon in the top-right corner to dock at a port rather than having to hit 'Escape' and then 'Dock At...'. Big improvement!' or something to that effect.
Each pic' should appear only once in any given thread, though I'd allow pic's subjected to cropping, manipulation, etc. to be posted.
By the way, Drebbel, I love how you can apparently just click an icon in the top-right corner to dock at a port rather than having to hit 'Escape' and then 'Dock At...'. Big improvement:up:!

I think so too Ark. Looks like many a'morning that I've put out to sea in my little boat.
"Just some back-seat moderation, if I may: Could everyone be so kind as to not quote posts containing pictures? It clutters up the thread and makes it take longer to load."
Very good idea, Wilco. I also will try to only post my sig once in a thread, unless making a point. That will cut down on lot on clutter too.
"Jawa?" I think we can mod that pretty quick, unless, Drebble, that's not how it would have read on a Dutch chart is it?

Well in SH3 time is linked to European time (Berlin, maybe BDU?) and if you hover the mouse over it it shows local time. Try that gronbek, maybe it's supposed to be the time in Washington D.C. or something? :hmm:

In post # 47 when gronbek says ( above piv ) :shifty: Something is not right with the time:shifty: I think he may be refering to this said by his NA........Time to end is 0.7 hrs.............which is 3/4 of an hour ( or allfull close to it ). But that should be the answer to where ever he requested the trip end which is not listed in either pic.
OOHH here it is:
At the bottom of first pic it says.............January 1, 1943 Local time: 22:20 ( or 10:20 P.M. ) and to the right of that it says P 11:20 which should be 23:20 (11:20 P.M. ) which is the subs home time. Thats a bug but can be lived with and easly straightened out.

Hi,
Well, I got an old AMD 4000+ machine with ATI 1950 graphics card ;)
I have not had time to start the campaign yet. Maybe tomorrow.
Too much fiddling around :p
Some things I have noticed.
I miss the watch command from SH3 report closest visual contact.
And the manual is lacking in describing the crew management. Dont understand the new layout.
Crew watchmen slightly transparent. I can see the land mass through their heads:)
Miss the captains quarter:yep:
There is a grainy haze covering the game image. Like an old movie but not that visible.
There is no periscope height meter.
The sound balance is slightly off. I can barely hear the crew confirmations, but the gunshots from deck gun are too loud.

Hi,
Sorry if it got confusing :D
Both images taken during the same game minute.
Strange thing is that it says local time 22.20 evening. Sun is shining brightly.
And where I live it is 21.15 according to windows clock. I first thought local time was the time windows reported.
And in the right lower corner second image it say 11.20 morning. P is pause button.

About the periscope having no height meter, I think that in American subs the 'scope could just be extended or retracted fully, without any fine-tuning. I've understood that this is compensated for by having the boat at a slightly lower depth. But someone correct me if I'm mistaken.
Didn't Bledsoe in "Run Silent, Run Deep" (novel), order the boat down another half-foot during his ill-fated qualifcation?

gronbek, guess you were posting while I was editing my post after looking over your post #47 again. Yes thats still a bug I believe about 11:20 for that would be A.M. Didn't know the P meant pause as I thought it was short for P.M. as a lot of games use it that way. ( ) I still think the 11:20 is probably meant to be one hour difference ( Subs home time ) than the 22:20 way to the left in pic. and should be 23:20.
Someone will track it down before long I'll bet.

gronbeck,
I have a question for you. The following is from the Ubi forum Dev Team answer thread...
Q: Taifu_Noodle: What units of measurement will SH4 use?
A: Silent Hunter 3 used the same measurements system as the Kriegsmarine - based on the metric system. For Wolves of the Pacific, we will of course use the imperial system since this is the historical solution. However, we are considering to have the game switch to metric as an option.
It looks like depths are all being displayed in Meters(metric) in your pics. Are you using an 'option' to have depth measurement displayed in metric?
Thanks

As a posible answer to the "Jawa" thing, the japanese don't have a "V" sound in their native language. When speaking foriegn words they use a "B" sound, but in the native tounge a "W" would be more natural for Java. Probably wrong, but that's my guess.

The measurements are only implemented in metric. There is no option at present for the actual US measure. Distances and depths are in meters and kilometers. There was not time to complete the game before the release. We will have to wait for a completion patch.

I've see other map screens where it is spelled Java. I think it's just another editing error. I think we will find more errors too. The devs are probably scanning these posts to pick up on errors for the completion patch. I think we can expect one quick patch, a comprehensive completion patch, and then a final patch.

Thank you for your reply and answering my question. You seem very certain with your answer and I don't doubt you, as a fellow who claims to be a beta tester has said the same thing. And all screenshots have only shown the metric system so far. Still, I would like to ask how you know for certain?
Whatever the case may be, thank you for your reply and answer.

I agree, in the pic it looks more like 13 feet to me too. Good point and certainly a possibility. Inquiring minds want to know! ;)
Thank you very much for the time and consideration to post the images.
I' ve not seen anything which will keep me from enjoying this game.

Looking at post #70 the underwater screenshot of the depth under keel is read as 13 meters but it looks more like 13 feet. Is it posible it's just titled wrong?
This is a known problem and will be fixed soon.

The measurements are only implemented in metric. There is no option at present for the actual US measure. Distances and depths are in meters and kilometers. There was not time to complete the game before the release. We will have to wait for a completion patch.
Is it really that hard to program a piece of software so that it converts Metric units into English units? I mean, it's just a few steps in a subroutine, right? Take the Metric value, multiply by the Metric/English conversion factor, then display the English value. This seems like pretty basic stuff, so what am I missing?

gronbeck,
I have a question for you.
Thanks
Good morning!
No I am not using any option. My version of SH4 uses the metric system without setting any option.

In the malay language, and probably a few others, the nam for Java is JaWa.
I also noticed the used Soerabaja (the Dutch spelling) for the port city of Surabaya.

I guess there is really 13 meteres under the keel. If there is shown depth equal to 5 meters - I assume this is the depth from water surface to bottom point of sub, then we have approximately 2.2-2.6 times of this height which is approx equals to 13 meters.
Thank you.

Looking at the screenshot it looks to me to be about 5 meters from the keel to the ocean floor, which would actually be closer to about 15 feet IMHO.

Maximum image size 1024x786, JPG format only.
Resizing images
If you need to resize a screenshot because itīs larger than 1024x786 you can use Irfanview, itīs free:
http://www.irfanview.com/
Open the image with Irfanview, go to Image -> Resize/Resample, under Size method select Resample, then type in the new size in Set new size, after that click Ok.
To save it go to File -> Save as, set Save as type to JPG, tick Show Options dialog and set Save quality to 85. Then save the image.
Alternative method
If you already have a JPG, Imageshack can resize it for you. On Imageshack.us click resize image? and select 1024x786, then upload the image.
Uploading images
Images can be uploaded to Imageshack:
http://imageshack.us/
Once uploaded youīll see several links that you can copy. Take the one named "Direct link to image", mark the link and copy it (Ctrl-C).
Paste the link into your post (Ctrl-V), then wrap it in image tags.

Quoting (as suggested by Safekeeper and addedd by Drebbel)
Just some back-seat moderation, if I may: Could everyone be so kind as to not quote posts containing pictures? It clutters up the thread and makes it take longer to load.

In fact, I suggest the following; if there are people out there w/the game who have never really played a sim from the SH franchise before and have a whole host of questions - you may just want to stop playing and give us shots - as your going to need our help answering your questions. And we can't do that until we get the game later this week. So - just STOP playing - and use the time to post shots.
We will REALLY appreciate it and promise to give you complete answers to your questions - sometime later this week.
Makes sense, doesn't it.

Yes. Even aircraft carried a mix of HE and AP shells. Aircraft have armor. Also, 20mm on a US sub is more likely to be used against ship than an airplane.

Be that as it may, my point was that the debate was 13 meters vs. 13 feet. Imperial versus Metric units. An apparent bug in the sim. 13 'meters' is the figure in the text box as reported by the crew. For this, I administered a well-deserved ribbing, (in good humor, I might add) as your post does seem to suggest that you can tell the difference between 13' and 15' even though that was clearly (another pun) not your intent.

As you have so gracefully pointed out, in the future I will be sure to post in the "proper" thread "units of depth measurement".
I'm with you, Payoff - truth be told, I was just giving you a hard time. I hope there are no hard feelings. I am in complete agreement BTW, that the units seem to be the problem. I think these subs would report depth under keel, (actual water depth minus draft of vessel) as opposed to actual water depth.
Back to screenies - WOW! :D I'm dying to get my copy! Keep 'em coming fellas. The 'appetizers' are much appreciated.

I too am unhappy seeing all those meters instead of feet. I also notice that once again the deck gun has AP shells. Even destroyers didn't carry Armor Piercing shells.

At Ubi forums it was stated that the detail settings changes the eyeballs size. High detail, huge eyeballs, low detail tiny eyeballs. They apparantly look normal at medium.
I don't have the game so could someone confirm this? It shouldn't be too hard to fix.

We do now that some Americans don't like the French, especially after France did not support the war in Iraq. So i think it could be possible that Ubi wasn't allowed to use some American planes.
