I noticed you have little to no trouble with bugs. All looked smooth and calculated on the attack. The rendering looks excellent. I hope my game is in today. I have just drooled on my keyboard at work:oops:. Thanks for that teaser Bud and it is an excellent video from a trusted source for all to see that SH4 is a great game.
That the sea can be very clear or "transparent" IRL.
A few things that I noticed were:
A) The sounds are ALL the same as in SH3. From the engines to the stopwatch to the periscope motor to even the explosions of the torpedoes.
B) There is no chatter from the crew. Feels weird compared to what you hear in movies (assuming thats accurate).
But on the whole attack thingy, very nice! So its true then that the TDC is integrated into the attack scope and that there is no "F6" TDC station like in SH3?
That the sea can be very clear or "transparent" IRL.
Yes I know thats why I put "(even though its not realistic)"

I think there's something between US companies and Ubi, and the more time passes, the more the US companies in question are looking to sue and whatever on the aircraft issues.
I think that's hogwash. It's a well known wartime aircraft that's been plastered all over the public domain for decades.
I agree, again I repeat that SH3 had Liberators and Avengers in the stock game that came out in 2005. Pacific Fighters came out earlier than that.
Yeah, well, time changes I guess. You do remember Pacific Fighter devs being sued by Grumman, right?

I'm sorry, I missunderstood your comment. I thought you said the water looks better WITH the transparency but it's not realistic.

:rotfl: Best one-liner of the year!
I wouldn't have stayed on the surfase so long. My thoughts while watching:
"He should really be diving.
Is that a destroyer.
He doesn't have the light for this.
Wow, they're pretty close.
Dive.
Dive.
Dive!"
Gwx has me paranoid. :o
heh, i agree, i was thinking this Neal guy was some kind of aggressive :arrgh!: arrr matey, we take em to davey jones now...damm the torpedos
that looked like a DE coming down and i believe a DD was also the front of that convoy. Neal needs to skirt them merchants for more:yep:

i cant understand how you get AOB so dam fast. I have hevy trubel to set up the attack in SH3..speed and AOB are the killer for me. the distans i usely get. It seems more easy to get the range in sh4 than sh3. are it so?

Excellent Video Neal.
And i agree a Video of your Manual TDC with maybe narrative or subtitles would be excellent.
Could you tell me your method of working out speed?
You seemed to just input a speed in'but i guess you estimated it rather than precise calculations?Apologies if i'm wrong.
I wish I knew how to do that! As it is, I was lucky elite hunter PMed me and gave me tips on how to get the video in the right format for utube.
I estimate the speed, largely based on taking the speed of the class of ship listed in the recog manual, dividing by half, and then making small adjustments as I observe the convoy. After you practice a bit, you get a feel for how fast a convoy is going.
The stopwatch does not seem to work (I said the same thing about the sonar  and was wrong), but to be honest, using the stopwatch in SH3 and SH4 to determine speed is a cheat anyway. I mean, it's cool to have a function to perform in setting up a firing solution and I would prefer it worked, but in real life there was a lot more to gauging a target's speed than clicking a magic stopwatch for 10 seconds. The game may as well just have a weapons officer give you the speed, like he did for range in SH3  If the WO is so damn good, he should be the captain not you, lol.
I realize some guys want to play without all the tedious calculations and I applaud that :yep: --it's a game, if that's how you want to play it, ok, have fun, it's all good, matey. But for the guy who has grown bored with sailing around and seeing all the ships laid out on the map for him, a red triangle to tell him when to shoot :/\\!! and an auto TDC to do everything but push the button for near perfect hits, the Romanians have done more for subsims than any other dev team in history. The TDC functions and map and targeting realism options in SH3 and SH4 are utterly fantastic (except for the "Enemy Target Destroyed" notif we cannot seem to get rid of :rotfl: ).
Yeah, I hope they fix the stopwatch, I would suggest a cheat in a cheat; that is, fix the stopwatch so that when the player clicks it to get speed, the game gives his the actual speed of the ship, plus or minus an error percentage. Basically the same function as clicking on an officer and asking the range. The longer the player lets the stopwatch run, the less error percent, so 10 seconds would be 50% error margin, 30 secs 30%, 60 secs 15%. Max out the error percent at 10% no matter how long the watch runs. The great gameplay aspect of this is the player wants a good speed estimate, so he needs to keep the scope up longer, but that also increases the risk of detection and counter attack. Those kind of dynamics make a game great.
good hunting!
Neal
Excellent video Neil! If you ever find the time, do a series of "Manual TDC Tutorials" for those of us that haven't grasped it all yet. :)

Great video Neal. Thank you for sharing it and demonstrating how all the items come together on the attack. Seeing the video action helps as I patiently wait for my copy of the game to appear.
BTW, did the Japanese DD find you after the attack and depth charge your sub or were you able to sneak away undetected?

AOB just takes practice, the more you do it, the better you get. Manual targeting takes practice, they didn't send skippers to sea until they spent weeks in a simulator. I suggest practicing with the external camera enabled, in a single mission. That way after you fire, you can zoom behind the torps and watch them, see how you did. You will learn that way. After you fire, end the mission and restart, don't play the game, just practice a few times. Say, 40 or so :D
It is easier to get range in SH4, with the stadimeter. Also, be sure to check the range a few times as you get closer.
The red/white light in the position keeper, when it is red it means the TDC is taking the data you gave it and constantly tracking the target you selected. It is historically accurate and a big step forward in realism for a subsim.
That's what really keeps me playing SH3/SH4, the manual targeting, the tactical thinking required to get into firing position. It's terrific NOT knowing whether your torpedoes are going to hit or miss. When they miss, not explosion, just.... silence, frustration. But that's a good part of the game, it means the game is working, you are getting involved. And man, it is fantastic when they do hit. You are really invested in the process, and when they go boom, you will yell out "All right!!"
When it comes to rangefinding the stadimeter looked rather interesting. Like a semi-transparent ghost image. I'm not sure if that is genuine or a trick of the video but it looked different. Also how accurate is range finding? How much do you have to guess? I recall the stadimeter in SH3 being rather buggy (I say recall since I haven't touched it in a while).

Not sure but I think the latter. If you check the video at 1:30, you can see when I'm on the bridge and the sub is riding the waves, I took a range with the target above the line and it looked right.

I don't think so, but I need to check that. There is an "attack map" with the torpedo track laid out, but I never used it in SH3 and wasn't looking for it in SH4.

That is how it functioned in real life. Read here (http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/periscope.html) under periscope controls. The nice thing about this system is even in heavy seas, both the real and the ghost image move together, you'll get a much more accurate range.

Thats the great thing about the position keeper on the TDC; if you are accurate on your range and AOB, speed is the only thing remaining. If the position keeper information doesn't match the bearing you are seeing in your scope, then your guess on speed is off. Make another adjustment and try another observation in a few minutes to check the position keeper again.

AOB just takes practice, the more you do it, the better you get. Manual targeting takes practice, they didn't send skippers to sea until they spent weeks in a simulator.
This is it in a nutshell. Eventually, given enough experience of firing torps at the bad guys you begin to gain a certain amount of instinct for most of the measurements: Ship speed, distance, AOB....you know a dirty, rusty old maru isn't going to be tanking around the ocean like a destroyer trying to get home before the rum ration runs out so you can make educated guesses and work out the likely speed. I'm sure in real life all the good skippers knew from being in that same situation time and time again, and although it isn't a guide for getting 100% kills, I think you get to a point when worrying about every little change in your calculations becomes more trouble that it is worth. Although knowing the basics is, of course, invaluable, that instinct becomes every bit as important.
Of course, Getting as close as possible to the target helps as well.:D
Thanks for the video, Neal, it was very instructive.

Probably not the right place for it, but a random thought
I noticed it in the manual, but it doesn't seem to work in game, but you are supposed to be able to write notes on the map using the pencil marking tool. It talks about writing some 54 charcter notes on the map.

Your task today is a dificult one, a 50 ship task force has been sighted, one ship being the Yamoto, and 30 or so being destroyers with American given ASW, your to go in and torpedo the Yamoto, since your all Silent Hunter 3 veterens this should be easy, But to make sure you don't run into any problems we are making this German guy named Bernard your XO, listen to him, he's a genius. :D

Where did this happen? As, I dont see their textures in the tex folder, the binoc zooms to a slightly different spot than where the unzoomed view is pointed, the shadows are pointing towards the sun. Why didnt you show us them from closer distance with the external camera? :hmm:

great pics guys, keep em coming.
Oh, I wanted to note something about this screen I posted:
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p101/russiafortheseal/sh135.jpg
The crew on deck are handled GREAT, I thought. Wonderful little detail. When the ship is cruising peacefully, they stroll around randomly, scratch their heads, and other sort of idle animations. When the ship is under attack or has been hit, they start to panic - like the guy on the left here - or duck and keep their heads down.
When the ship is hit badly, some of them hit the deck and then disappear. Others die, as the guy in the middle here. I think I hit him while trying to get that machinegunner with my flak gun (it was in a training mission).
You will not see the crew on deck as the ship sinks. They will hit the deck or die before it happens, and then disappear.
Very cool!

I'm guessing ('cos I don't have the game yet), did you achieve that steep ascent angle by being able to control the dive planes and ballast manually? Or did you just blow ballast with some heavy flooding aft?

The funny thing is that my card is a poor little 128mb GeForce 6800 and I have a number of options disabled (personally, I don't like the post-processing filters anyway - it looks great when it's 'clean') :p
There is a downside to it though in that my frame rates can be quite low - but far from unplayable!
Couldn't tell you about ATI vs. nVidia - I'm sure both are fine with the game though.

Well, I just read on another thread that there are TBFs and Brewster Buffalos on the US side. :-? I am a bit disappointed at the inconsistency... but realise that as a USN sub skipper I am most concerned about those Rufes and Mavis planes. :o

oh and one of my torpedoes went right next to a submerged submarine as i watched it in the event video...i should have paused or something but i wasnt ready for it and was probably fast forwarding even. how sweet if it was just two feet left and down she goes...unless it was me...i read someone got tagged by their own torpedo in game

Perhaps the devs have developed a NYGM or GWX compartmentalised flooding system. Multiple hits to already breeched areas won't do anything extra in that case.

CCIP, your SH4 pics are the nicest i`ve seen so far. If i don`t ask to much, can you specify with what video card and more important what video settings you had in game when you took the pics? Thanks man
P.S. I just want to know if it really is a difference in graphics quality from Ati based video cards to nVidia ones.
Thanks and good hunting:up: Totally agree with post processing filters turned off.
The post processing tends to make it look like some post modern take on a war zone. It reminds me alot of Gears of War of all things.
On my first campaign patrol, in an S-Boat or out Manila, I caught a HUGE task force headed north in the western Celebes Sea. Three fleet carriers, and I targeted the lead one...a Shokaku class flattop crusing at 14 kts. Fired all 4 tubes at a range of 750yds, one dud, but the rest ran true and hit her just below the superstructure on the starboard side. In less than two minutes she was gone completely.

3.4 Ghz Pentium 4
1 GB RAM
6200SE Nvidia Geforce with 256MB RAM
I HAVE NO SOUND CARD
I HAVE A 1.1 PATCHED version of SH4 (UK) Version
The game runs so slowly as to be unplayable. Is the lack of sound card the crucial factor or is there something very wrong with this software?

On graphics, I guess there was no way the dev could stop water reflections. I thought I read somewhere that you would not see these reflections off the sea in real life, they look good but would toning them down not help FR.
What I mean, my 0 was on this ships 90 and I had hit her with a couple of torps and she was burning and smoke pluming up. It was a rolling sea, and as I was looking at her through my pscope, this wave came rolling right towards my scope. As it got very close my view of the ship went from full on to just being able to see the tops of her masts. But on my side of the wave was the reflection of the whole ship flames and smoke. I was not a case of seeing through the wave, but the wave though blocking out all but the tips of her masts, carried her total reflection the side of the wave closest to me.

So i move to intercept a strike fleet im given the location to, i only have 4 torpedos left.
One hits the bow of the ship, two dead centre, and another onthe stern, taking out one of the propellors.
it goes around in circles while i follow just below it, waiting for it to sink.. and get my kill.

biggest complaint(aside from ridiculous savegame load times)...this ship would have never sunk had i not gone after it...at one time i had hit a tanker 6 times...heh two didnt explode however but still it was listing so heavy that the waves from high seas were actually putting part of the bridge under the waterline yet i followed it for several hours and it never went under. too bad i didnt have any deck ammo left either. lol also i rammed it several times to try and help it under but nothing
Perhaps the devs have developed a NYGM or GWX compartmentalised flooding system. Multiple hits to already breeched areas won't do anything extra in that case.
must be something along those lines...i observed two torps hitting the side so close to the same spot that the hole from the first one shifted to where the second one hit so it seemed only one hit? i dont really know how to avoid this with the autosolution aside from shooting only one at a time http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o49/borschwanger/twistier.jpg

Nothing you can do about that I expect, although the newer version of GWX allowed autosolution without lock so you could spread your shots. But it's always the most satisfying using manual TDC.

I remember reading bout her joining the army awhile ago, good on her
USS Bubblehead getting hit by the bombs of a Japanese floatplane. Prior to this attack, the american sub was hit to the aft deck, destroying her engines and causing heavy flooding in control and engine rooms.
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3373/bubblehead1fu4.jpg
Unable to move or dive, the submarine had to fight off the attacking planes. Reports reveal that USS Bubblehead downed 2 and damaged 1 Japanese aircraft before slipping below the waves for the last time.

Shakermaker, the numpad is the pile of number-buttons on the right side of your keyboard. The one below "3" should be called "del".
Safe-Keeper
03-24-07, 12:12 PM
Right, it's the bottom-most one on your right-hand side, to the right of "0 Ins" and to the left of "Enter"/"Return". If you're on a laptop, you'll probably had to hold a special function key while pressing it (you should see keys with one symbol in one colour and one in another colour, such as "- Del"). The alternate colour is the key's function when you press it with the special functions key depressed.
If you've tried all that and there really is no Del key within reach, you'll have to edit the key configurations file somewhere in your SH4 directory, unless there's a way in-game to re-map keys.

This time the crew actually don wet weather gear when its raining. I dont know if it happens during shift change or not. and it DOESNT rain for a month like some OTHER submarine sim shows. ;)
I attacked a frieghter and the crew aboard actually get killed. I dont mean in a life raft but aboard ship. I hit the boat with a two fish attacke first. It leaned but didnt look like it would sink so I sent another one at it. This time, I was on external camera next to the ship and saw the crew on deck. The fish hit, explosion, and some of the crew fell down.

Considering the monsoon/rain season, technically it should be possible that it rains for a month in the Pacific and it is actually unrealistic if it's not possible to be caught in rain for a month during that time.

There is many a ship in the Pacific
That flies the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know they're some
Their mothers were all tailors
They sewed their navy blue uniforms
Their fathers are all gamblin' officers
Down in the Pacific
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a life boat and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a Junk
------ organ solo ------
Oh mothers tell your children
Not to do what they have done
Spend their lives in sin and misery
Flying the Rising Sun
Well, they got one foot on the rowing boat
The other foot on the deck
They're taken aboard the USS New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is many a ship in the Pacific
That flies the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know they're some

Right...back to a not so poetical moment
The Tambor class USS Triton off the coast of Japan after being caught off guard by a Zero, a direct hit to the Engines locked her in place, several hours later after getting the flooding under control, and was about to dive so see if electrics were working, was hit by another bomb which hit the fuel and the patrol ended (somehow I survived wtf :p )

Apparantly you also caught the Zero off guard in return, nice screenshot.

Think that was a betty or scout plane, I got marauded constantly after the first attack as I tried to repair.

R3D...that first shot is AMAZING! :o What is your system specs? (pleease god, let them not be as good as my own.....:p )
Yes it is, but mainly beacause it has been scaled down, and thus seems to have FSAA in it. In full size it wouldnt look as good.

Hey AVGWarhawk in your first pic ( post 416 ) watch those rocks as I found out their BOULDERS. Look at the size of this one compared to the sub which is setting on bottom.

I took her down a little to fast here ( straight down, engines off ) and the sand flew. LOL
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/Ouch.jpg
Sub is right on bottom but the NA says 4 Ft. left. I think thats because the sonar for depth is located in the aft and its higher than the keel.

Think I'll just stay awhile and take a nap. ZZZzzzzzzzz

For the OTHER sub sim, anybody who has lived in or near England can testify it can rain for more than a month...:D

How do you get such transperency? I have everything at max, but the environment stuff, cause the models look better with it off. Does transperency come from environment?

One thing I like about SHIV is the fact that you have to be really careful and identify your target. I'm still out on my first patrol with USS Spearfish in the Celebes Sea. I had sunk a small freighter the previous evening when my radar picked up a contact.
What started out like this....

...ended up being this... Our Boys!

Damn! I worked hard on that solution and SO wanted to let loose a fish. :nope: Hmmm, they're so close I can see their butt cracks.

Let's scare the crap out of them.. Surface the boat!! :arrgh!:

just a minor little thing, in the crew section of th manual every sailor is named 'john wayne'
bit of irony considering he never actually served.
But he was the feature star in Operation Pacific.:D

Mexico deployed a fighter group of P-47s to the Southwest Pacific, and they flew combat in the Phillipines return. Mexican troops also took up coast defence and base security duties in California.
