View Full Version : I made my first ever MOD. Kinda....

I have actually made my own mod. Im ashamed to really call it a mod though, but, it is set up to be JSGME compatible. :)

Basically the throttle settings on all the playable U-Boats in GWX had been reduced a hell of a lot, because some people were not reducing their speed manually to two knots in a silent running situation on the knot meter. So with a bit of advice from my older brother about adjusting simple things in a cfg file, I made a mod to bring the telegraph setting for all boats back up to 0.40 which was what it was originally. It works too, so I was chuffed with that! I wasn't sure if it would or it would wreck the game!

He has a changed basic file which he enables and disables as he goes so he can get all the upgrades and better torpedoes for free, or ridiculously cheap. LOL I am not a cheapskate I pay the full asking price!:rotfl:

Why do all this? I'm forgetful, I was hitting 1 for ahead slow on the surface and instead I was only doing like or 4 knots instead of about 7.

Could this be the start of another MOD MONSTER???:hmm: Great job! It takes only your imagination to make it happen! We have a great collection of imaginations hard at work making mods. Please help me welcome another active imagination hard at work making SH3 a better experience for the community:up:

Oh yeah, were do I get this mod of yours?:hmm:

Well its nothing fancy. Its just a restoration of the old throttle settings, I was just kinda chuffed that with my thimbleful of ability I was able to do something! :)

I am no mod monster, I couldn't do not even 3% of what some people do here, like with Uniforms, spinning DF antennas. I'd be lost at sea without an F5 button! LOL

In my book, if you made a change inside the game then you are a modder:yep:. The other modders had to begin somewhere just like you.:yep: Now look at these guys!!! Some are really going to like what you have done. So give up the link to the mod:up:

Trouble is, I wouldn't know where to begin to do anything more advanced. And I mean stuff like Venatores uniforms, Cobalts VIIC/41, Ocean's Damage Mod etc... that looks very um... complicated.

LOL

We all started off small.

I don't even pretend to know how Cobalt did what he did. Not my field.

However, things like U-Boat skins & Ship skins are fairly easy once you grasp what bit goes where and have a good handle on your choice of image editing suite.

We all expect you to be the next great modder, maybe for SH4.;):rotfl:

Its allways very cool to me to see someone try and achieve the first step of Modding, a Mod doesn't have to be a huge amont of data changed or Created, A small detaill in the Bridge for example, changing the light intensity, for smaller that it can be a Mod is a Mod.... So Penelope, yes you can call it a Mod, and yes your a Modder...

I hope you will Start more stuff and that we will see great things in the future...

Thats PG!!! You have been labelled. MODDER:o Like JC said. Sometimes the smallest thing can make a HUGE difference. Bring your imagination and make your mod. Others here have and it has been awesome for SH3

So - can you truly be called a modder if you don't make your mod available to others? Is there a link to this thing?

I think this is a great idea - I too used to be very happy just manually setting my speed to 2 knots if I wanted to be in silent running, and haven't really been keen on having to keep remembering to manually adjust my speed to what it should be every time I change my telegraph settings with GWX. I'd love to have something that would change only this in GWX - do I read your posts correctly to say that this is the only thing about GWX that your mod has changed? Do we have confirmation from any of the GWX gurus that this doesn't break anything else as an unintended consequence?

Oh yeah, and where's the link?

Anyway, well done and welcome to the wonderful world of modding

I guess so... I can upload it somewhere, as for breaking things, I tested it out and it works fine on my game, also I guess I will write a simple readme for it too. Just to be professional you know. :)

I also have a "cheap as chips" mod which actually my brother did where he reduced renown costs to ridiculously low levels so he could up his rank.

Only trouble is, I don't know what I am doing really. I don't know what tools I need to make better mods, how to use said tools. Which files to change etc etc...

I really need to be taught guys. I'd like to learn and develop skills, but, unless there are resources where I cna learn, or things I can be taught by people, I am going nowhere.

Ah, didn't know you had started a specific thread on this. I'd already posted these instructions on how to use Mini-Tweaker in response to your other post in "GWX1.02 vulnerability mod" thread, but they are more appropriate here. Apologies for the duplication.

MINI-TWEAKER INSTRUCTIONS:
Actually, it's reasonably straight forward to use, just looks a little intimidating.
As usual, back up any file you plan to change before doing this (Although the Mini Tweaker will create a backup for you anyway).

1. Download, install and run it by:
1A. Download SH3MiniTweaker_build104.zip and Tweakfiles.zip
1B. Unzip SH3MiniTweaker_build104.zip
1C. Run setup.exe
1D. Unzip Tweakfiles.zip to the \SH3 Mini Tweaker folder
1E. Run SH3 Mini Tweaker

2. Pick the SH3 installation you want to make changes in by:
2A. In the upper right corner of the screen where it says, "Locate alternate game folder", click the "..." button. Browse to the \SilentHunterIII folder of the installation you want to make changes in and select it.

3. Pick the file you want to change by:
3A. Click on the "Load Tweak File" button at the top middle of the screen. This brings up the "Select Tweak file" screen. It should already be pointing to your \Sh3 Mini Tweaker folder, if not just browse to it.
3B. All of the SH3 files are shown here in one directory. You don't have to browse down through subdirectories. Just choose the one you want.
TECHNICAL NOTE: You will note that the files all have a .txt extension tacked onto them. This is because technically these are the "tweak" files (files used to map Mini Tweaker to the real files), but pick them just as if they were the real files.
SECOND NOTE: Most, but not all, SH3 files are listed here. To change a file not listed here you would have to create your own tweak file, which is a whole other subject.

4. Pick the Category and field you wish to change within the file by:
4A. From the drop down list at the upper left, pick a category. These change from file to file.
EXAMPLE: If you were changing the torpedo.zon file, the categories shown are all the different kinds of torpedoes (T1's T2's etc.). To edit the T1 torpedo, just pick "T-1 (G7a)" from the menu.
4B. The "Names and Values" box will now show a list of all of the fields within that category you can change. Click on the one you want.
EXAMPLE: For the T-1 you will see four fields, MinEF, MaxEF, MinRadius and MaxRadius. Click on the MaxEF field (This field influences the torpedo's maximum power).
4C. Enter the new value you want for that field in the "New Value" box on the middle right of the screen. Click on the "Save new value" box.
EXAMPLE: Enter 180 into the box and click "Save new value" (This would set the T1 torpedo back to its more powerful setting from the stock game).
4D. Exit Mini Tweaker

5. The Mini Tweaker created a copy of the file you just changed, in the same directory as the original file. The name is the usual "Copy of ...." name. You should move this to some other directory (otherwise the game sometimes gets confused and still uses this copy with the old values in it).

You're done. Package your mod and celebrate (well, test it first).

What I'd really like to do is, I would love to spearhead a sort of "training wheels for GWX" Mod.

Because, I found the adjustment a little rough. But got there in the end, apart from torpedoes.... But that's sorted now.

Anyway, yes, training wheels for GWX. I know I am perhaps getting way ahead of myself in trying to achieve this and I have a great deal to learn first. But in the future, I hope to have learnt enough to accomplish this.

Many thanks for the instructions Steppenwolf I will have a try and see what I can do, as for the other 'mods' I made... feels a bit wrong calling them that compared to some of the others.... so I will call them adjustments.... I have 3, I got my old telegraph ahead slow setting back. I got my cheaper upgrades, and, I also put the old underwater marker back (except I changed its colour to green) because the invisible marker in GWX scared me.

All of which JSGME compatible so boneheads like me can turn them on and off easily. I will try and get them online they can be my first contributions to the MOD community here.
