You can see U-505 today. She is on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Looking at this picture I wonder if it still has those bullet holes, or if the battle damage was repaired before it went on display?

The commander of U505 commited suicide during a heavy depth charge attack?
That's awfull, just imagine what that must have done to the crew. After reading it's history I don't think it was a very lucky boat at all.

The boat in the picture is type IXC/40 U-550. Destroyed on April 16, 1944 by American destroyer escorts. Twelve Germans survived.

That would be the Peter Zecsh (sp), he was universally hated by the crew of U505. They tossed his body overboard in a weighted down potato sack and the XO took command.

I was about to say, the sub in that picture is NOT u-505.
Edit:
Here is the conning tower of U505 at time of capture.

Looks nothing like the one posted above.
Its not early in the war either. U505 had 3 emblems
1. ) lion with axe under Axel-olaf Lowe.
2.) Axe with olympic rings under peter Zechs
3.) Sea shell under Harold Lange

There was a skipper in the RN nuke fleet(ssbn's) referred to as the pink pig there are many a nuke queen(RN slang for ssbn crew) who would have happily shot him for free:up:

According to the website, it says if you look closely you can still see the holes in the conning tower of the U-505. (Even though that's not a picture of her)

If anyone really wants to know the inside story on U-505, and a little about what it was like to be on a type9 uboat, i HIGHLY recommend this book:
http://www.savasbeatie.com/books/STEELBOATS_book.htm
Ive read it cover to cover, probably 4 times now  (im pathetic)
This extract is good reading:
