If anyone is interested, here is a way to remove the zoom indicator and/or the degree numbers from the Observation and Attack periscopes, by changing a few values in the menu_1024_768.ini file.

The menu_1024_768.ini is located in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\

Be advised, that deleting the degree numbers is not historically accurate and that part of the mod is so noted below.

To remove the zoom indicator, change as follows:

[G2B I132]
Name=Zoom
;Pos=37,-274,46,19
Pos=1,-1,46,19 ; To relocate OBS magnification value -- so not visible

[G26 I132]
Name=Zoom
;Pos=37,-274,46,19
Pos=1,-1,46,19 ; To relocate ATK magnification value -- so not visible

To remove the degree numbers, change as follows:

[G2B I133]
Name=DegHL
;Pos=192,-162,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate OBS degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G2B I134]
Name=DegHR
;Pos=384,-162,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate OBS degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G2B I135]
Name=DegVB
;Pos=166,-384,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate OBS degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G2B I136]
Name=DegVT
;Pos=166,-190,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate OBS degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G26 I133]
Name=DegHL
;Pos=145,-89,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate ATK degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G26 I134]
Name=DegHR
;Pos=430,-89,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate ATK degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G26 I135]
Name=DegVB
;Pos=93,-428,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate ATK degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

[G26 I136]
Name=DegVT
;Pos=93,-143,20,18
Pos=1,-1,20,18 ; To relocate ATK degree numbers -- so not visible (though not historically accurate)

I've used this modification for many months with vanilla SH3 and recently added it to my GWX install with no problems. Haven't tried with NYGM, though I don't anticipate problems there.

My apologies if this has already been posted on this forum somewhere -- I looked but couldn't find anything.

EDIT: Thanks to the great pics in post #5 by panthercules -- have noted the parts of this mod that are not historically accurate.

Interesting concept, but why would you want to do this? Based on everything I've been able to find so far (see, e.g., the photos below) the real scopes had the numbers on them just the way the game had it before you removed them:

Actually, although I think you got carried away with removing the degree numbers, I do like the deletion of the magnification indicator numbers, so I have kept that part in my install - thanks for pointing out how to do this :)

Now - if you could crack the nut on getting rid of the green grid lines at night, as discussed in another recent thread, that would be something worth doing (unless of course someone has evidence that the real scopes used some weird lighting that made the lines light up green at night)

This has inspired me to start working on what could be the next great periscope mod - for those who can't get enough of Das Boot and like that retro look, here's a sneak peek of what I'm aiming for now that I know how to get rid of the degree numbers:

Thanks for the great images panthercules, I've saved them to my hard drive. You know, I looked all over the web and couldn't find a single picture of a U-boat's periscope view (probably a reflection of my search technique) though I did find one or two from US subs. Plus, I don't have any books on U-boats, and I'm sure there's probably a photo or two in some of those that would've helped me out.

Anyway, I've edited my original post to reflect your input regarding the historical inaccuracy of portions of my mod.

Thanks again.

No problem - that's one of the great things I like about this game and the community here - I've always been a history buff and knew a lot about the Battle of the Atlantic before, but things like this prompt me to dig a little deeper and find out even more cool stuff from time to time. It took me a lot longer to find those pictures than I expected it to (Google image search is a wonderful thing), but I got to see tons of other great U-boat pictures along the way :)

Plus, now I don't have the magnification numbers in my scope, so it's all good - thanks for starting this thread and pointing this out :up:

Well, panthercules, you've taught this old dog a new trick -- I see what you mean about Google image search. I'll sure be using that a lot.

You're right about this community -- a terrific group of people. I notice the U-boat has a very international appeal. I see posts from all around the world, including both hemispheres, from folks that have in one way or another contributed their knowledge and skills to the enhancement of this game; either as individuals or as teams. I've certainly enjoyed the fruits of their hard labours, and am gratified to be able to contribute my little bit to the effort.
