This number can only be explained by the fact that the calculation does not take in-breeding into account. Its possible to workout how much inbreeding happens in a population. The answer is: A Lot! Most populations have 5-6deg of seperation between any two people being related, before motorised transport this was far, far less.

If you understand genetics, you will begin to figure out why it is a bad idea. This idea comes not only from the idea that it is repulsive to a normal person, but also from the possible offspring it could create. You must think in three's in a situation like this. When you go against nature, you go against the grain of what is healthy. It will always be like that.

Depends, the Americans use a diffrent way of nameing numbers than the English. In the UK we use the origional Latin&Greek system. In America they made it up as they went along. ;)

I agree, but here is something to think about:

If we ban incest because it can produce retarded children, do we ban normal parents who have genetic conditions from having children because their children might have that condition?

If not; what is the difference between the two?
If so; how do we enforce it if there is a "accidental" pregnancy? (not to mention the huge moral minefield here).
