View Full Version : Yup, those uboats sure do look good....

But do they feel good? you know.. atmopshere.

I've been thinking. (No.. dont run way :roll: )

There has been a *cough* boatload of mods that adjust how the uboats look. But i dont think as much as been done to adjust how they feel.

Im not sure any of this can be done, but im thinking along the lines of this:

- Crew, needs to be a bit more.. i dunno, interactive. Theres alot of voice's that are unused. Not sure if we can renable them without a SDK though.

- camera angle when diving. Anyone ever notice how when your facing to starboard looking at the dive station that the boat tilts to the aft, and yet if you look port at the naviation tables its tilted down to the bow like its supposed to? That be sweet if we can reverse that ( i mean who really stares at the navigator when diving anyway?)

- graphics obviously. Ive always thougt the boat should look more lived in. To see more personal effects of the crew, so they look less robotic. More girly and/or wife pictures where you can acutally see them, maybe a calander hanging from somewhere, a bit more rust maybe, a few paint chips here or there. etc.

Not meant as a critcism, but sub interiors often look like your inside of a sterilzed hospital room compared to these pictures:

-Gramaphone helps maybe, theres lots of those around. Real radio broadcasts help out alot.

- Maybe the way the player moves about the sub? You should feel like your moving about, using hotkeys jumping around from station to station is convient and practical, but does it break atmosphere ? I dunno. ive tried to go without before and reverted back to hotkeys.

- removing that "hatch" on the radio room would do miracles, but i honestly dont think that will ever happen. Its been tried before, again and again in the past, and nobody's ever succeeded.

I think that, with an really immersive interior, i dont think id ever care to use the external freecam again. Ive always felt the game is more beleiveable if viewed 1st person. But here is where im out of ideas, is it even possible to make the inside as such?

Agree 100%. There is too much space inside that U-boat, you would think that if this game and computers were around in 1939, you would think is this a propaganda game, look how much room there is in those U-Boats, I WANT TO JOIN ! :yep:

I would like a mod that changes all the crew response sounds, like we had for SH2.

Any good voice actors around?

Ive started tooling around with textures - just seeing what goes where and what overlaps. Control room wise, So far i think the only place you can add some sort of decoration, poster, picture, blackboard, whatever is on the pressure bulkhead fore and aft. All other textures seem to be reused and wrapped around places. Pitty really since i find myself in the control room far more then the radio room.

That said Im thinking about adding a little blackboard with white chaulk marks over the hatch leading to the radio room :88) Either that or the ummm the hand drawn boobs that were seen over the latrine/head on u96 in dasboot - but that might look a bit out of place in the control room. I should add im using a fairly well done rusty/used interior texture that i found in NYGM. Not sure who did it, but i really like it. Type 7 interior particuarlly.

Radrio room will be easy, lots of flat surfaces there that arent wrapped around 6 different places.

I ducimos, I agree mate with the fact that we can get better graphics on U-boats interior, but as for the picks, you have to realise that they were tooken after intense fight, and emergency situation, I guess thats the 505 and he was captured , they would try to run away or escape, and under DC most of the times a lot of stuff would get thru the subs floor...


After some months at see I guess the Sub would be a sad Look as for Igiene and cleaning...:rock:

I've actually had something like this in the planning, as soon as I could release my viic/41.

I wanted to squeeze the hull in a bit and maybe add some objects into the interior to make it more cramped. Would you pm me if you're interesting in my help

Naturally, it is a matter of taste but these sound rather "cosmetic" to me. Have you ever tried to do most of things in 3D (without much usage of 2D screen tools) by turning all those 3D handles, knobs, buttons, etc.: like setting TDC for a torpedo run, opening torpedo doors with 3D switches and so on. How does it feel then? It is really quite not bad feelings for me.

As for 3d modeling, i was thinking about that the other day.

Now, i know preciesely NOTHING about 3d modeling, and a little less about correctly wrapping textures around new objects. In that regard all i really know is to color a section of the textuer, and see where it shows up when you load the game. Now If someone wanted to change some of the interior 3d modeling, im afraid that i wont be much help at all.

Naturally, it is a matter of taste but these sound rather "cosmetic" to me.

ALOT of changes people make ARE cosmetic. Infact theres a 21 page sticky thread on this forum that is all about cosmetics.




as an aside, this is just tossing idea's out. Its not like im planning a major project here, im much too burnt out for that. I may jack around with some skins, maybe tool with the interface some how, but nothing big, serious or major. just somehting to occupy myself until SH4 :88)
