View Full Version : Estimating depth charge distance
I'm on my 6th patrol now, in a type IXB boat, realism set at 90%.
Assigned to grid CG85, before I reached Orkney strait (?) I chased/tried to intercept a convoy. Unfortunatelly a couple of warships aware of my presence so I had to dive and run silent while they depth charged me. Lucky for me I got away safely :D Saved the game and will continue tonight.
Anyway, while being depth charged I wondered if it is possible to determine the distance between the depth charge (when it exploded) and my boat. I mean, can we estimate the distance by timing how long it takes for the shock wave to reach (and rock) the boat after the explosion? Is it modeled in SHIII?
Can we also determine the position of the depth charge is by observing how the boat rocks/sway? My thnking is, if my boat rocks/sway to the right first, then to he left, it means the DCs position when it explodes is on my left, and vice versa.
Thanks,
Hmm i think it's a bit tricky, maybe if you always have the same volume of sound you can estimate when the depthcharges a to close.
My tactic? When the boat starts to shake, it's bad!:rotfl:

my intuition tells me that if i hear a ping, let alone a depth charge, ive buggered up.
i think the only way to know the distance is the amount of rocking (easier if you DONT have the camera shaking mod), and the volume of the explosion.
Use your observation-scope "o". You can watch em coming down and exploding.;)

You CHEATER!! ;)
And even if you go deep enough you won't see the charges anymore because the water is to dark then.
But when the charges a dropped after i got pinged i'm starting to take action, otherwise i stay deep and hope for the best :shifty:

In GWX your sound man announces 'wasserbomen', thereby giving you a short element of warning. Obviously the deeper you are the more time you have to manouvre away

 If I'm deep and I hear wasserbomen I give it a few seconds and go flank. Reduce back to slow after it goes off.
Thanks guys.
What I do, up to now, is silent run and go deeper... and enjoy the sound of the explosions:D

Off the top of my head....
i think DC's have a 2.X ish to 3.0ish meter per second sink rate.
Hedge hogs are somewhere around 6ish or 7ish MPS sink rate.
Where/ how i manuver after they drop their ashcans depends on how they approched my position. You an always count on the K gun spread, plus the trailing stern dropped line.
The K guns are amazingly accurate too.

Hey Xlbob, have you tried my Depth Charge Shake mod?
I posted this paragraph in another thread (regarding Depth Charge Shake v1.01):
A GWX depth charge has a maximum damage blast radius of 14 (meters?). The impulse depth charge radius (with Depth Charge Shake v1.01 installed) is always 70 (meters?). So, this means that if your boat shakes even a little, the explosion was probably at most 70 (meters?) from you, or closer. In other words, too #$%#% close.
So in other words, the maximum distance a depth charge will shake your boat is 70 meters (when using Depth Charge Shake v1.01). And the closer the depth charge is, the more it will shake your boat.
nvdrifter,
thanks. I'll try your mod. Is installing it easy?

Yes, just use the JSGME installer. There are 3 'strengths' of Depth Charge Shake v1.03 included. Only use one version at a time.

Thanks, I downloaded it and unzipped the file.
Now, my dumb question is ,which one is which? Do I chose which version to install using JSGME?
Thanks,
@ Tijin
I'm no cheater. I'm simply a maniac who likes nice explosions.
Even in water with bad visibility you can see exploding charges at distances up to 200 meters. So if you can't see the bangers, you're save.

Try with the weakest first, then the medium and even the strongest if you want to see which one you prefer. (use JSGME to install-and only one at a time)
