View Full Version : GWX Framerate And Sinkrate Question

I just started playing around in the GWX academy convoy training and I came across 2 things that I have questions about.

1. When I am in my u-boat at the "F2" view and I look at the chief or the planesmen I get 90+ frames per second but when I rotate around to look at my nav or aft in the control room my FPS drops to 30. Also...when I am in the "F9" room (radio and sonar) my FPS is around 30 but when I look another direction it jumps to 90 or so. In freeroam camera inside the boat some directions that I look in I get over 100 FPS and others I get only 25 or so. I am not using any antialaising but I am using 16X aniscopic but I dont think that that is the reason. I am really baffeled why I get such a framerate drop when I simply look in cartain directions even though nothing more significantly is drawn.:damn: It seems NOT to be related to where the ships are.

2. In the same convoy training I put a torpedo under the keel of a tramp steamer and I was shocked to see it not sink. It just continued on with its aft end low in the water. Later...after the trawler sunk the DD for me  I left the trawler in my dust and caught up to the pack and started an experiment with the other two undamaged tramps in the convoy. I put a torpedo in eack at 4 meters depth and although both were hit neither one sank. :stare: In the convoy training missions are these things loaded with cork or wood or something because although I am a fan of not always sinking these guys with 1 torpedo I do believe that this is a little unrealistic. Do the tramp steamers in the campaign act the same way?

#1: No idea; sorry.

#2: How long did you wait? Sometimes it can take several hours for them to sink, depending upon where you hit them. I've hit ships at times and, after evading the escorts, have tagged along behind and trailed the convoy for several hours. Why? Because often I've discovered, several hours after being torpedoed, one or more ships dead in the water as the torpedo damage finally caught up to them. I've also had them go down whilst trailing the convoy. Sometimes it just takes time for them to finally sink.

Yeah there is a balance to the sinking now
Some explode and sink straight away and some sink slowly over an hour or so
Depends where you hit them also

I have sailed away from a convoy cursing my luck only to get a SGD message after the ship finally gave in

also I find with the smaller merchies that a flank hit can work better
than a keel shot sometimes.

Well I did one keel and two flank hits with no sinkings. That is my original complaint on these tramps.

Yeah there is a balance to the sinking now

There certainly is and it is so refreshingly different from stock.

First time I tried Naval Academy ship to ship gunnery ( with me acting as gun layer), expended all ammo with only 3 ships sunk. Usually got them all within about 50 shots without moving sub an inch. Quickly returned to base to try again.... :damn: ....same result.

Gave up, and moved on to Torps Training. Quelle horreur!! Used to sink 'em all in about 8 shots max...again without moving. All available eels ( except those in outside storage) expended. Total tally 2 vessels!

Wasn't until I applied lesson learned in Flak Training i.e. it helps to steer the sub into position and let decently qualified gunners (your own crew) do the shooting, that I twigged what was happening. During a chase on one of the distant vessels in deck gun exercise, I noticed that one of the others which I was leaving to finish off later (ammo permitting), had sunk!

Now I act as a true skipper. Delegate the gun work to the crew and 1WO, telling him to cease fire when I reckon the ship is a goner. Still do the torpedo stuff myself tho.

Feels like a different game now, Thanks GWX team

Edit: Just noticed MM and Lanzfeld's posts. Does this characteristic only apply to the small merchant???

If you read my original post this is happening with tramp steamers in the convoy training academy. It is as if they are all loaded with cork or wood. Like I said I am all about not having the magic one torpedo kill all the time but with small tramps it should be most the time. I will run the mission again today without the "longer wakes mod" as I know it does something to the torpedo files.

Also...any ideas about my "directional" framerate loss?

The frame rate loss is a bit of a poser you got me.
associated movement in the objects?????????????

Apologies, I did miss the "convoy mission" reference in yr post

Have played that mission through about three times in total. Can't really remember
noticing that problem although I do mostly finish the tramps with the deck gun. Normally I take out both the Hunt and Armed Trawler first. Followed by the C2 and Small Tanker. By the time I that's done all the tubes are in reload. Impatience takes over,so I surface and gun them.

Will try playing the mission the correct way, with end around torpedo attack and see what happens. Can't see why there should be a problem tho....they certainly go down with one shot in the Torpedo Training mission.

Have not seen any noticeable reduction in frame rate anywhere in game (except for external view closeup of explosion). So I really haven't any reason to look at this. Have got 2Gb memory, if that could make that sort of difference?

Framerate issues just got stranger. Flying around on external view looking at all the ships I get around 70 FPS but when I include my own sub in external my frames drop to 25. Again this is in the academy training convoy mission.

Well....after some experimentation I turned off my 6600GT 128MB video cards 16X aniscopic and that was it. Framerates now stay in the 80-90 FPS when in the sub. So strange to me.

Only with GWX.
