Greetings;
I have been working on a time-line collection Radio message enhancement for Silent Hunter III. The additional messages liven up game play. I am wondering if there would be an interest to a release of this, as a messages_en.txt mod of sorts. But first, a little advise or help please.
Currently it has some 400 additional Radio messages that are historically accurate for late 1939 through early 1945. The better percentages (about 2/3) of the messages are related to events in the Atlantic & Mediterranean. The rest include some Pacific & supplemental messages. Recorded warships sunk by certain U-boats, Kriegsmarine & other war related events, other newsworthy events related to the war.
Messages are broadcasted around 1600; days with multiple messages are split up by hours give or take. I figure that’s ok.
I followed the stock format;
From: Naval High Command
To: German forces at sea
(Message)
Bdu.
The format is plain, figured that’s ok to because these are general messages, unless there are better formats. Also a lot of the messages include a date, some don’t. At first I thought this be good to break it up, now I’m not so sure.

I don't really have any advice as far as format ( someone will ), but i like the idea, this would be a nice addition:up: Keep at it.
Edit: This is not directly related, but you may be interested in it. Similar concept as far a livening the game up a bit.

I think if you put a date on the messages it might not coincide with dates the player has picked.
But I like the idea of new messages

In the format the game uses the messages are sent in line with the game time
They already have the date on them anyway

That link is for a different type of text editing to alter or rotate in-game msg's from your WO, CE etc. Requires Commander for the file but It does work great!
The jazz I'm working on is for broadcasted radio Messages "M" when received.

Well this is a time-line so if you start a carrer early (starting) war you will see what messages are sent for the days & time played, and so on when available. If your carrer is say in late `40 then what messages were for earlier dates would't be sent at all.

Progress report; additional (Atlantic / Med.) supplimental messages added, now totaling 445+ time-line radio messages. When I'm done I estimate there should be just over 475.

Do I understand you right.
At 1600 hrs each day there will be a radio message from BDU? The idea is to surface or be on the surface at this time and receive the message?
If so, this sounds like a terrific idea.

Progress report; Body of the messages are done! Total for this release is 483.
For the most part I'd say it's ready to go, I'd like to finish up the read-me file, and get some opinions on the format before I zip/rar it up.
Here's a few examples of the messages. They are in the current (stock) format:
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/01_16_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/01_16.jpg) http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/1_59_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/1_59.jpg)

Please check the next post for a few examples of alternates.
The first example is stock, and the next are just different ways to present the message body.

The following are a few exammples of how radio messages can be presented. I might mix it up a little bit.
I don't want to open a can of worms but I'm realy looking for opinions - suggestions on what looks better. (these message examples will not be in the release)
1 Stock - plain format.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_14_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_14.jpg)
2 Stock format with extra spaces.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_15_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_15.jpg)
3 Message directed to your u-boat.
(this would need to be limited because most messages are general information)
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_16_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_16.jpg)
4 Message including date sent/broadcasted)
Yes I know it shows the u-boat # but that could easily be changed to "German forces at sea" or some jazz.
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_17_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/a_tl_rm/0_17.jpg)

Something such as this perhaps;
http://www.huntny.us/sh3/2_22_x/6_468_t.jpg (http://www.huntny.us/sh3/2_22_x/6_468.jpg)
I like it actually.
About the translations; I agree it would be nice to have.
Here's the problem. I tried a few lines using http://babelfish.altavista.com/
"German forces at sea" translated to "Deutsche Kräfte am Meer" - OK
"Deutsche Kräfte am Meer" translated back "German forces at the sea" - OK
"Naval High Command" translated to "Hoher Marinebefehl" - ?
"Hoher Marinebefehl" translated back "High naval instruction" - Not ok
Just for kicks I translated a few message sentances and got back lots of inaccuracy. I can't imagine if I used that translator what the messages might then be actually be saying in German. Or the time it would take to verify etc.
So, I don't see doing the translation at this time. Unless I find better tools to use for accuracy, and the extra time to process multiple sentances and each preface.

Hehe, I'm a German so you could give me all the lines and I translate them (or I'll try;)). Perhaps some fellow German subsimers would like to help me?!

I think it was irishred that had that radiolog mod, but for some reason I think he stoped at 1943.

I do have one disagreement with all the formats, though I could very well be wrong:
Wouldn't a message from "Naval High Command", be from OKM (Offizier der KriegsMarine), so messages would not be signed "BDU"? Also, if the message is from BDU, why would they sign it again at the bottom?
Just wondering.

OKM would be the German abbreviation for "Naval High Command". By 1943 Dönitz was the CIC of the German Navy, so I guess that the messages could be signed with BdU or better "Dönitz". Just to show I'm smart @ss: OKM doesn't mean "Offizier der Kriegsmarine" but "Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine".:smug::know:

Feedback before release is good, interesting.
Sailor Steve; You have a good question. I used the stock game format for the "From: - To: & Sig" and concentrated on the message content. But now those are done so I can refine the rest.
hyperion2206; Im starting to like "Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine" for the "From:"
Am I to understand this translates to "Supreme command of the war navy" ? When I translated that back to German I get "Oberster Befehl der Kriegmarine". Which is correct? If you don't mind me asking.
I have another question for you guys.
For "To:" the messages have "German forces at sea". As I posted before translated it's "Deutsche Kräfte am Meer". First I belive that is accurate, but which is better?
I mean for German players that would oviously be fine, but for English players that don't understand any German at all Im not so sure. Now I could make the translation, and include what they mean in the read-me file. Or just leave it as is.
About the signature, right now they are "Bdu", from stock format. I figgured this to be in-game message candy. I mean I don't know if actual messages sent were actually signed or not. But for added authentic looks I'd be willing to change the sig.
Now just so you guys know if they were signed in a certain way, only after a certain date it means some manual editing. I'm not sure I could do that with a macro so it would delay the release a few days.

I guess the best translation for 'Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine' is 'High Command of the German Navy', 'Supreme command of the war navy' would be a 'word-for-word' translation.
'German forces at sea' would be 'Deutsche Kräfte auf See'.
EDIT: If you need any help with translations I would be really happy to help you!

hyperion2206; Cool I appriciate that info!
And good point about the word for word translations. These are dictionary translations (from software, on-line tools) and not nessesarily the use of the Language. Which is why I hesitate to use them. I do appriciate the help.
All of the messages though, that's almost 500 lines of stuff, not just a few words in each line but multiple sentances etc. I mean that's alot of work I think to translate. I guess I have a hard time just asking you or anyone to just do all that work.
I'm looking to get this mod out by the end of February, or there about. So Im thinking since this will be a copy-paste text mod you or anyone who downloads it could translate the actual messages if they wanted to anyway for their own use. Then, given time of course if there is a complete work done I'd be more than glad to combine the files in a new download with credit given for the work.

When IrishRed did his "Radiolog" mod, he used 'OKM' for the first few, and then switched it to 'BdU'. I don't know if he knew something special, or what source he used, but it seemed real at the time. You might check out his earlier work, compare it with your sources and see what you think.

Addnl_time-line_msg's has been released!
I had actually planned on releasing this a little sooner but durring busy season work takes much time. Then one must run sample carrers at times to test the messages, and all that jazz.
I have decided to include two versions, well two files.
One stock, all in English, and a Second partly translated in German. In the partly translated file - the message TO: & FROM: are translated in German*, the rest of the message is in English.
Of course a readme and two example pics are included so you can use the one you like. Remember not to add both. Installation instructions included in the readme file doc.
If you want to test the mod after you make the install, start a new begining carrer (`39) and these two examples should show up around 1600, `39, 09-03. make sure you have a qualified radio crewman at station.
Enjoy!
