View Full Version : Wake homing torpedeos
Is there a problem with these T XI (g7es) zaunkonig II torpedoes,3 times out of 4 the dam things circle around the target, then attack and sink my SUb instead. This happens while silent running to..These things DON'T LIKE me...:damn:
I read from somewhere that the target should be going over 12KTS for the homing torpedos to pick it up. But in SHIII, they home in to the nearest moving target, I´ve seen them home in on merchants going 5KTS or slower.
The best hint for your situation I can give is diving. Dive deeper. 30m should be enough.

They take 400 metres to arm themselves....that gives you time to crash dive if needed and cut the engines at a reasonable depth....the downside is the noise you'll generate to the DD's :hmm:
I've used them and usually have good success. When you fire one order engines "Stop" before they reach 400 meters. Sit and wait if you can for them to reach a target. If you can't... good luck. ;)

Go all stop silent running and they cant see you and will just straightline.

400 meters? SH3Inspector says the ZaunkonigII has a 300m straight run. Anyways, theyr'e right. Dive.
Silent running = Stuff a rag into Bernards mouth.

I use the T XI torps in late 43-45 and I think there pretty good although they are good for targets doing 12kts or over I also used them on targets doing 4-5 knts, however if the target slows down below 3kts the torp will miss and try to re-aquire anouther target,I also found out if you fire one at an escort that's about 6-700m from you the torp will over shoot and come back at the target as it locks on its props and if the target is above you when the fish hits well just say good-bye.

Huh - i've tried to get my wakehomers to turn back to my sub by lauching them and then going flank. I could never seem to get it to happen....
On the other hand, in multiplayer, i've used them a bunch of times against the other player. i guess it depends on the search cone - when the torp turns around to reacquire the DD it acquires you instead. I dont' think it matters how fast you're going...

It's probably more a case of the faster/noisier your going...the more chance there is of it locking onto you :arrgh!:
I`ve been using TV and TXI torpedoes and never been hit by one. Keep in mind though, I use it ONLY against escorts and only if the situation turns bad and they start hunting me or at least searching.
So, I fire against targets from at least 500m distance while runnign slowly. The targets usually make at least 10 knots - perhaps that`s why these torpedoes almost never miss.
