I'm playing GWX with SH3 Gen as well. Patrol date Sep 1940.

Upon opening my orders I am informed to consider any merchant heading to the UK as a fair target as the trade is considered illegal. I've just sunk a Large Tanker (19,000t , biggest ship I've sunk) sailing under the US flag. When I quit the game for bedtime it showed up as a neutral ship.

So the question is: Will I receive the reknown award for sinking the vessel or will I be court marshalled and executed when I return to base? (although it is patrol 2 so i might not make it back)

Great kill but you just lost renown points for that one. On saying that I sink French ships so who cares, on the up side Bdu may give you the Iron Cross Second Class for that bit of destruction.

the US didnt enter the war until later years so you will loose renown and maybe have to start your career again if you play DID.

No renown and you have "Awoken a sleeping giant". ;)

Damn it! It was such a sweet intercept and kill. AND IT WAS 19,000t :damn:

So to clarify then. Even if SH3 Gen orders you to wage war against merchants supplying the enemies of the fatherland the engine doesn't recognise them as legitimate targets?

SH3 gen is just for eye candy
you dont get any renown for completing the objectives

Unfortunately, you're spot on. The game doesn't recognize neutral ships supplying Britain as valid targets. But that kind of models real life, as Hitler tried to keep the U.S. out of the war as long as possible. They knew very well that the U.S. was supplying Britain, but in order to avoid a public international incident and turning U.S. public opinion against them (remember, the U.S. public sentiment was very isolationist before Pearl Harbor...everyone saw it as Europe's war and Europe's problem) they went out of their way to avoid U.S. ships.

Same goes for ships in convoy. If you sink a neutral, even though it's surrounded by enemy ships, it still counts as a neutral. That part I don't quite agree with, but hey....we gotta work with what the game engine gives us.
