Guten Tag, meine Herren!

Now that I finally registered as the 1489th newbie on this great forum, I thought I should briefly introduce myself! :D The name's Martin, I'm 26, from Vienna, Austria (like the mate in 'Das Boot' with the crabs) :p

I'm quite new to 'hardcore' sims like SH3 (played mainly ww2 FPS), so forgive me if I ask questions that are already posted somewhere (thorough searches solved a lot of problems already).

I bought SH3 over a year ago, but never really came further than the quick mission / academy. Was a bit shocked back then: never had a game that demands so much learning/work and patience to be able to play... As a result, the disc vanished in the darkness of the cellar.

But, like so many of you, I watched the amazing "Das Boot" DVD, remembered the game - and found myself totally addicted!

The tutorials + stickies in this forum made it a lot easier to start - thanks to all authors for that great work!

Right after the install, i stumbled upon the GWX Mod, dl and installed it.. that leads me to my first question:

Is it possible to play 'stock' SH3 with a mod installed? Not that I'd go back to vanilla-SH3 (started with GWX right away), but I wonder if it would be much easier to get some tonnage in the career campaign, or to learn basic nav and manual targeting? Is there less 'traffic' in GWX than in the stock version? I still have set the game to a quite low realism (all off except sensors, fuel, O2, batteries), i think around 20%

I remembered :D
with SH3 commander and its additional options - are they saved in the config file, or do i have to launch the game everytime via SH3c?

argh!

Welcome:up:

If I had more time I would answer your question, short though you can run as many installs as you like. Somebody will give you the details.

Welcome aboard Swab! Yes, you can install both versions. I think you just have to rename on of them. Anyway, vanilla version you will tire of quickly so I recommend just going for the GWX modded version. I do not use SH3 commander so I can not help you with that. When you do get set up go get the torpedo damage mod. It is really nice. You can find it on the SH3 mod forums. Any questions do not hesitate to ask! See you in the Atlantic....leave the crabs home though:shifty:

Welcome aboard, Matey!
I don't think you can go back to stock SHIII once you have installed GWX. I would play with stock for a while, just to learn handling the boat and shooting torpedoes.

In GWX you get less information on sightings, so it is more difficult to find targets, convoys zig-zab and are harder to intercept. However, the harbours are Alive!
So all in all GWX is more realistic. You may find some useful hints on tactics in my website.

Good hunting, Herr Kaleun

Martinol,
Welcome.
I would suggest you play SHIII unmodified and work up to 100% realism; then go to the various mods: GWX, NYGM Tonnage, etc. as these are much harder, but also much better.

Welcome aboard,

listen to "the elders" , they speak the truth.
Make sure you have a clean install of SH3 along with it's latest patch 1.4 (which you can find on ubisoft.com)
Then look at the stickies up top of this site and download GWX. When you install this program it will also give you a really neat little program called JSGME which allows you to add mods without having to change any files/folders...etc

The first mod you will want to install has to be December 23rd corrections.

Once you have completed these basic steps you will be free to keep adding on as many as you want, just be aware you should be in port when you install these files to avoid any type of corruption....

Good luck!

Hi and welcome to Subsim

If you search for dual install you will get the info for more than one install
As all have posted above you would be better learning a little in stock

The shipping isnt reduced from stock - its probably increased
What has ben reduced is the frequency you recieve contact reports on the map
Now you have to hunt for a kill
Regular soundchecks etc

Enjoy your stay and feel free to ask away whenever you need
Gives us all something to do

Welcome to SubSim:up:

The way to do multiple installation is simple

1. Install a clean version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3
2. Patch it to 1.4b
3. Copy the whole folder and paste it whenever you want the new installation to be. After that rename it to whatever you like. Let's say GWX.
4. Now put the multiSH3 into the GWX folder and run it. When asked put GWX as the default directory where your careers will be saved.
5. After all this install GWX in the GWX folder, make a shortcut to the desctop and you're ready to play.
6. Now you can install the SH3Cmd 2.7
7. After the installation is complete you right-click onto the desktop icon. You click on properties and where it say target you type "C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX. Now this is the example of my SH3Cmd that will check the files in the My Documents\GWX folder that is generated by the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX installation. After that this particular installation of SH3Cmd is linked to that installation of SH (GWX in this case).

I would suggest you do a different installation of SH3Cmd for each different installation of SH you have. That way you don't get the SH3Cmd confused and you don't mess up things.

Also I would suggest to leave the clean patched version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3 untouched as that way you can always copy it and paste it to add new mods. If you want to make new installations always copy and paste this folder and DO NOT USE the Installer of SH3 again (at least not for as long as the game is already installed)

Reporting contacts will improve the chances of the Luftwaffe helping you but those odds will be reduced the further away from one of your airfields the contact is situated :arrgh!:
