I don't want to pour cold water on the forum since we don't have an actual game to discuss yet... But I am still seeing a lot of people proposing (or demanding) all sorts of features that SHIV is clearly not going to have. Meanwhile, we are apparently a few weeks from the release date, so the odds of significant alterations being made based on our feedback must be approximately 0% and falling...

Just a reality check.

I am worrying about just one thing - will the game have time compression that actually works properly? I want the game to kick me out of maximum compression as soon as a contact is received, with no time lag, and I want an AUDIBLE report (unlike SHIII) so that I don't keep leafing through a magazine as a destroyer charges towards me! SHI had both of these things. I find the lack of this in SHIII really limits how much I play the game. I hate staring at the screen for ages with my finger hovering over the "-" button... I have no interest in simulating naval boredom!

Of course, if the game does not have these things, they ain't going to chuck 'em in now because of this post! See, I'm doing it too...

Did sh2 have the same problem? Pretty awful in a game with such length between action that TC wouldn't work properly...

Good suggestion!

Don't worry. Jscones will come to the rescue.
The developers have to leave something for the modelers to do.

Yes, SHII had the same problem.

And modders have not been able to fix it in either game... It's hard-coded apparently.

To be honest im pritty much happy with all thats going into SH4 and dont really have a problem with some of the things being left out.
I recon people shouldnt be looking at the game half empty but more half full.... wait that doesnt sound positive.. well you get what i mean

The game has the dynamic campaign, Lifeboats, Transparent water, S-class sub... all things people were hoping/demanding for. There are so many positives to SH4 that instead of finding more negatives to throw into the frey we should all be looking forward to what is going to be a great game

I look forward to SH4s release with great anticipation

If something is too badly done, hopefully we could talk them into a patch.

I think Loaf is right. The time compression is a serious issues in SH III, at least for me. Any setting above 256x will usually result in the plane being already right on top of my boat the moment it is spotted by the crew. I can't count how often I heard "Flugzeug gesichtet!" on a clear day, immediately followed by Wabo detonations resulting in the end of my sub. Not funny.

Same thing happens at night/fog, quite often there's simply no time to react because you get killed/heavily damaged right out of time compression.

The solution would be to reduce time compression to 0 when something happens. Couple that with a dialogue box and we should be all set.

Be glad you're not playing Falcon 4.0, though. It appears to never drop you from time compression, pretty much no matter what happens:damn:.

Actually, I do play Falcon. But since a typical Falcon mission rarely takes more than an hour of real-time instead of the weeks in SH III time compression isn't much of an issue there for me.

Speaking of TC, I saw on a recent update about SH4 that it will have TC of 4096...I suppose for those long Pacific crossings?

You can edit a CFG file and have 4096x time compression in SH III, too. If your system can handle it, that is.

And if it couldn't?:hmm:
Let me guess: Your CPU gets fried....:smug:

Of course, any time compression over 256 in SHIII prevents aircraft from spawning...

Yes, I know it can be edited. I just thought it telling the devs put this TC in SH4, though. Pretty cool. :|\\

And if it couldn't?:hmm: Then your FPS drops to 0.something. Not fun.

SHII had a worse problem: in high TC the messages would "backlog"; you would have "Rig For Red" and "Secure From Red" and all radio messages piling up and taking real time to play, so you would be hearing things from two days earlier by the time you went back to normal time. The you would wait while all those messages played out, and there was nothing you could do to stop them.
