View Full Version : State of the NorOps Mod Address

With things slowing down on the NorOps front and the customary monthly update almost eleven days overdue, I figured this "news update" had to be written.
Long story short: NorOps has been slowing down for a long time. In the beginning I'd work several hours every day. Currently I work for half an hour to an hour, infrequently, sometimes with days between work sessioons. I've not gotten very much at all done, and to be frank, I'm considering just laying the whole project on ice and starting over come Silent Hunter 4, making NorOps an expansion to some other mod.
Bottom line is, NorOps is not cancelled, but it's not going very well either.

Hello Safe-Keeper,
Every modder/creative person knows what it is like. It can happen that you reach a point where you desperately want to finish, you know that the things you have finished are absolutely brilliant, but at the same time you feel that there must be an end. You are simply burned out on the idea.
From my experience, usually there is no going back once you have reached this point.
I have myself a still born SHIII project on the list. During December I was working on a new project which looked very interesting at the outset. Around christmas I was tired of it and put it on hold. A few days ago I have now finally made up my mind that I will probably not finish / release it. The good thing is, I have also realized that I can still use most of the data, in fact I have a much clearer mind now about what I want to do.
You did the right thing by speaking up here, because there are people waiting for your mod. Sometimes modders water everyones mouth only to get attention and then simply dissappear. But if you reached the point where you don't want to go on, and you speak out, no one has a right to criticize you. y advice is to do some collective damage assessment now, and try to look for ways how your project can be rescued.
Maybe you can find someone who will take it over or at least help you?
Good luck,
GE

Well, as I said, NorOps is not dead, it's just reduced to a snail's pace compared to what it once was.
Wooly, I'm sending a defunct LND layer your way. At least one "harbour" in it is causing a CTD. It seems to be west of Bergen city.
Please see what you can do with it, matey.

You are simply burned out on the idea.I've done a lot of scenario design before. And I mean a lot. If you've played Rick Goodman's RTS games, you've probably heard of the Woad Creations "elite" design group. I was in it, under the pseudonym "Midgard Eagle". I wrote articles, made templates, and got started on lots of very advanced scenarios that were never finished.

Thanks a lot, 'wooly. I'm currently laying the finishing touches on Bergen's regular traffic and docked ships, then I'll start implementing random and scripted bombing runs.
I've added some ships in the fjords surrounding the city, too, so that you'll have something happening during your fjord cruises. Not to mention that there'll be the occassional resistance fighter to cope with.

GWX.
You don't have to send it back, though, it'd be enough if you just told me which harbour(s) were causing the CTD.
Thanks a whole lot for the help!

:o :o :o
I can see why it's getting to you. Maybe a bit too ambitious?
Of course I sincerely hope it works out, as I would love to see it.
Safe-keeper: Dont lay this on ice, mate, we need it!!!
PS: Har litt arbeid igjen på fiskeskøytene, bare si når du trenger dem ferdige! Venter også på DivingDucks oppdatering m/"bevegelige seil og mesan".. (tror det var det han planla, da..)

Did you move the port of Bergen ?Yes. I'm trying to place the player's "spawn point" in Laksevåg where the u-boats historically left from.

That's true !
I swear I cannot play SH4 as long as I've not finished a complete GWX and NorOps career.
Just a question : looking at the work you've done, and at the work that has to be done yet, when do you think the beta-testing time will begin, approximately ? :hmm:

I've got a way to go still. It won't be out before SH4, that's for sure.
That's ok.... At least, that's good to see that you and some helpful guys like Bigboywooly are still working on that nice project.... Thanks for your reply.
I wish i was as skillful as some guys on this site, cause I would be glad to help you. Even if it's nor really a big "help" for you :dead:, maybe I'll give you some of my works that look good, on the torpedo damage project. ;)

I don't want NorOps to crash more than anyone else does. In fact, I'm probably the one looking forward to the completion of this the most.
I always knew NorOps is your project, but didn't know that you were the only one working on it.... :o:o:o:o:o
Good luck, Mr Safe-Keeper. And thanks in advance for your work. I've seen some screenshots of Norops, it seems to be a great addition to this amazing game.
Keep up the good work ! http://yelims.free.fr/Sourires/sourire116.gif

I always knew NorOps is your project, but didn't know that you were the only one working on it.... I pretty much am. Then there is a handful of people helping out with models, tech assistance (winks at wooly;)), and so on.
So yeah, it's taking a while. But I like it this way. Gives me full control of what happens to it, you know;)?
Yes, for sure. But I must admit you're ambitious, cause it's quite a lot of work for yourself :o, considering that other works like GW and NYGM have been developed by a dev team, and were not the project of one and only subsim member....
I wish you the best of luck for the development of NorOps.

Bump ! ;)
Please SK, keep us informed about this project.:rock:
