Hi all Thank you for various opinions. :p

I made a Torpedo damage Final version It's my original version.

At final version

I tried to add a partition in the hull and new damage file.

Nice effects OB. :up:

And nice to see hull plates twisted with what looks to be fire burning inside the hull. If that's what you were trying for it seems to have worked out ok. The only question I have is, should the torpedo damage be that large? Especially if it's from just one torpedo.

I tried to make a pilot light of the hull in an impact but I rejected it to affect the damage of DeckGun.

This is the best damage effect yet. Thanks for your efforts. The only thing that I would like to see is slightly smaller holes left from torpedo hits...they seem a tad too large for realism...but otherwise beautiful. I especially like the gun damage effect!

The mod is fully compatible with GWX. It's just a texture file so it makes no alteration in Cfg and other core GWX files. Try it, it Rocks:up:

I recommend it for anyone simply because what has been done here adds A LOT when you in for the kill. The textures and damage have a fantastic look. You will not be disappointed.

I agree. I reckon the size should be about half to one third the size in the shots i've seen. Great looking mod though!

I really like the mod and will try it with Improved Uboat as I have not yet changed over to Grey Wolves or GWX.

I like the look of the mod but the damage IMO is way to large. I have looked at torp damage photos and it is maybe 1/6th the size.

I don't think this hole is too large at all. Remember that those samples pics were taken on a small ship. Real torpedo damage is pretty shocking.

What s astonishing it s when it you ve got a ship with for example two holes which joined together make 1/3 of the ship and the ship keeps floating maybe in making the medium sized ships more vulnerable this ll increase the realism

Just asking, 'cause i've seen screens from v2.0 and what i'm particularily interested in is the random size of the torpedo hit holes. Do these work the same in the Final version? And is there deph charge damage model as well?

I am testing a proto type. It's a small (-30% The conventional ratio Now) Torpedo damage.

I think a It seems to be lacking in force. It is still a trial phase.

I like a full (100%) How about you ?

Ocean, whatever you do looks really awesome to me. Randomization is excellent with the trops and cannon fire. To be honest, I've been getting so antsy to see the 3d holes you created that I'm just shooting at anything and missing all the time:oops: .

Yes, I think so too. Maybe you could add type 2 to the download instead of replacing the larger damage effects?

Having some cadavers floating out might also be interesting much like the bodies blown in the air except modeled for water?

Eeeeek cadavers..???!!!

Oil would do it for me, and I think it should be possible, since the you can see how you loose oil with the u-boat when your fuel bunkers are destroyed. I don't know if he can do that tho, I mean doing textures might not be easy, especially with this quality and depth, but modding those "holes" to emmit smoke or oil is for sure pretty hard for a skinner.

Btw; when I first started going through this thread then noticed the real images, I thought ok well the final (damage) images look big too, but if your not used to seeing this in the game then of course they would.

I watched the Bismark attack and the texture overlap was pretty messy,( Sorry about the Critic).
But it WAY Better than the stock textures.

Given my druthers I'd prefer the smaller to the larger. Not criticizing by any stretch of the imagination though! :) I love the damage model itself: very spiffy and nice!

I second that: That's a big hole!

I'm guessing the differences in size damage seen is due to the difference between warships and merchants. Warships seem to have signifigantly smaller holes than merchants. Which makes sense due to their construction I suppose.

Are you certain, though, that that is from a torpedo? That almost looks like collision damage.

In perspective the damage to smaller merchant shipping looks a bit big but other then that I like it, alot!

this is the best little mod IMO ,but as we all can see from the pictures every shell and torpedo damage is different depending on angels ,warheads ,armor ,ship structure ect.
its impossible to mod it that realistic.

But still it looks very greate to me:rock::rock::yep:

I command you to work fast ,work well and work better.

:huh:.... Man, to do this "mod", you just need 2 things : a picture of a ship destroyed by a torpedo, and no more than 1 minute to paste the picture on the "Expl_mask01_a.tga" on Paintshop.... Ocean Blue is a great modder, but I just want to say that's not really a hard job to do this, just try to make your own torpedo damage texture, that's not so hard, Jim. ;)

I don't evaluate then score a mod by how difficult or easy it was to develop and in saying that I include the latest GWX update I'm currently beta testing prior to it's release :yep:
I do however evaluate then score a mod after seeing the impact it has on a game and gauging the feedback from users of this game. :yep:
I take your point about timescales but it only reinforces one of my beliefs....why waste incalcuable time on a mod that is buggy or has a detrimental impact on gameplay when sometimes you can create something extremely quickly that is of immeasurable benefit to so many :yep: :up:

But when I think about the balance that is total Torpedo and deck gun.

I am convinced final version is best.

This mod is a "must have" IMO, I love it, great work man and thanks for sharing it with all of us. I always wondered why there was no torp dmg in the stock version, it used to piss me off, I would fire a couple torps at a ship and you would hear a big BOOM! and all the dramatic explosions and lifeboats flying through the air like rag dolls and all that jazz, then go to free cam to inspect the ship and it looked like nothing had happened to it. This mod really made my day, thanks again.

Hey, I just had an idea.... If it's possible to assign a torpedo damage texture to every ship, is it possible to assign a torpedo damage texture to all ships when the torpedo hits them under the hull ? :D That would be possible to make a special texture where we see the broken back of the ship. :)

edit : Just let me know if it's possible, and in case it is I'll try to do it. ;)

Actually Alex that sort of happens already.

If you get a good contact (:doh: bit of a contradiction there!) with the magnetic and the damage model decides that the ship's back is broken, then the ship breaks in two with a whacking great ^ chunk out of the bottom.

Nothing really left of the hull to attach a graphic to...unless you are thinking of texturing both halves!

Besides, once it reaches the 'back broken' stage, it doesn't stay around long enough for you to admire the view!

Could be considered best mod so far this year :yep:

No doubt a front runner for the mod of the year.

Some say it is to big but I think not. Today I saw a picture of the Cole that was hit by a bomb brought in by terroists on a rubber boat. It created a very large hole in this vessel. I think OC's mod is dead on for the correct size.

Keep going OC. This little mod is fantastic. I can not say it enough.

With OB's mod, if we get a hit on the tip of the bow or stern ( these aren't critical hits) we just seem to get a blackened view of the original outline. Not that I'm complaining much BTW!!

Anything more realistic, even a transparent missing section....would probably be better...if that's at all possible.

Well ,mate, have a try....see what you can come up with!

I just downloaded this mod and compared the two textures with those of my GWX installation. I made an interesting observation.

It seems there might have been an error in the original GWX install. The filenames of Expl_mask01.tga and Damage_metal_a.tga in GWX seemed to be switched. This becomes obvious when you compare the Mod files to the original GWX files.

I don't have time to test this observation any further.

I will try the mod and I am very impressed with the pictures posted and the work that Ocean Blue has done.

I just wanted to point out that GWX might have had an error that kept some good damage textures from appearing in the game.

MinDamage...The minimum number of hit points that generate a damage decal...
MaxDamage...The number of hit points that cause the maximum damage..
MinDamageRange..The radius of the damage decal for minimum damage...
MaxDamageRange..The radius of the damage decal for maximum damage...
MinDamageAlpha..The transparency of the decal for minimum damage....
MaskTextureName.The texture used for decal shape....
DirtTextureName.The tilable texture with explosion traces...
DirtTileFactor..The number of tiles per 10 meters of ship surface...


These settings are in the .val file

That's a WIP (= I'll try to add more elements and rusty colors, if I release it some day) where the goal is to see if it's possible to draw the broken "stempost" and structure, (thanks for giving me the translation, Cheapskate) when the torpedo hits the ship under the hull. I must say it would work.... The only problem is that texture is not static, sometimes it's not "in the axis with the probable place of the REAL stempost" (= can appear as perpendicular with the real stempost of the ship), I hope you understand what I mean....

But there is a problem, I think OB knows it very well, and I want to share it with you guys. The torpedo damage texture have an influence on the deck gun damage one.... It means that if you use the deck gun with that torpedo damage texture, the deck gun damage on a ship will look like this :

:-? Now you see the problem : this ********** skeleton does NOT have to be here.... OB made a good work, and I think we all have to model this texture just like he did : with details like broken hull and shadows, no more....
My work doesn't look good, and cannot be used because of the influence of the torpedo damage texture on the deck gun damage one.... Until somebody come and find how to remove this influence. :lol: :88)

I suggest You had better make top and bottom / right and left / the damage picture which you may become diagonally.

And I think about the ratio (balance) of size of two files.

I think there is a lot more possible in a lot of areas!
It seems to just take someone willing to experiment out side of
the norms, so to speak.
If I ever find the area I got the info on the damage textures from,
I'll give it a closer look.
I may have missed a bit of info on first glance.

It would be helpful if you would give the updates version numbers in the name like Torpedo Damage Mod v1.01, Torpedo Damage Mod v1.02, etc.

So far, the last three updates seem to be on 2/28/07, 3/4/07 and now 3/11/07 per the dates on the zip files. Is this correct?

I assume that this latest one (3/11/07) is different and improved?

WOW - finally spotted my first ship in a month of patrolling (GWX in early 1944) - caught up with a light tanker traveling alone at night in a heavy storm - first ship I'd spotted since loading up your mod. I finally got a torp into her amidships and switched to external view to take a look - awesome looking hole in her hull :rock:

Normally I would install a mod in port.

But, this seems like it could be added to a saved at sea patrol but I ask in case I am ignorant.

I noticed there were no files downloaded when I DLed it myself. I assume this is the one for SH3??? the final Ver2.0???

I use this mod with SH3-GWX2.0 and it is really great to be able to zoom with the external camera under the waterline just onto the big torpedoe impact holes. It adds more realism !
There are two versions so you can make your own choice.

I would guess, (As I have not looked close yet),
that part of the way damage is shown in SH4,
is due to the newer engine.
It appears to make part of the main hull vanish.
Since much more TMAPping is involved in SH4?
Perhaps that's part of it?

You could try converting the tga to dds and check the results.
But I suspect it won't work.
Check the original file in SH4 for Alpha channels also.
And the original ships skins for Alphas also.

If I returned with this hole on my hull, I'd be the biggest hotshot in the base... :D

I don't have any screenies but an aircraft bomb directly hit my boat on the deck gun, destroying it and all I saw was a hole at least a meter across... :arrgh!:

So question: how does this mod work?

And BTW, this is an excellent mod! :rock:

Holes size is related to the damage radius or power ( i cant remember exactly now)

May be armor and hitpoints of the sub can have effect too.

may be you have a mod increasing the shells damage and power ?

I guess it's connected with the size of a ship - the same amount of damage looks more dramatic on a smaller one.

Below are the explosion masks...in no1 it is simply damage and in version no2 you get glowing embers from hot steel.

They both look great in the game but it is down to personal choice which one you use...I personally prefer No1.

SH4, has it's own damage models... which, if it were... feasible to translate/transfer the damage images from this, clearly SH3 mod, to SH4... would take a whole lotta work to do so.... just so you know. :shucks: :yep:

In case someone wants to use this with Silent Hunter 4, I've found out a way to do it.

I only use it with SH3 ships ported to SH4 and things like that, as I consider the SH4 system to look better, but it takes a lot of time to make new 3D models for the damage. This a fast way to get decent-looking holes in the ships in a very short time.

A) You have to rename the files into something different, so they don't overwrite the original SH4 files, which have the same name but are way different. In my ships, I simply exchanged the last _a of the .TGA files for a _b.

B) Then you need to edit the .val file of the ship with S3D and add a VisualDamage controller, just like in a SH3 ship. Set the Parent ID of this controller to the main node of the ship in the .dat file.

C) Then set the controller properties. I use the same ones as in the SH3 ships, changing only the name of the textures to the ones renamed previously.

And that's it. You have to repeat those steps with every ship, but the copy/paste of S3D can speed up the process, as you don't need to make any changes between ships (only the parent ID). A bit of work when you have a ton of extra ships in your installs, but I think it's worth the effort.
