Guys, from a newbie to the forum. I've been playing SH3 for months (game time - literally). I've only applied the official patches until yesterday when thanks to help I loaded Commander which I've only just started to use. I'm no PC buff, in fact probably the opposite. Looking around various sites I find screenshots I've never had, the largest target I've seen in campaign is a Bogue carrier, the best targets were 3 light cruisers. I'm not particularly bothered about different skins etc but would like any suggestions and recommendations as to what is available to enhance the game. I know a lot of shots are created by making a mission or scanario but I just want to know if there are any mods to improve the basic game. On SH2 I sailed into scapa flow and had a field day. Been there twice in SH3 and found nothing. I've yet had to request or see an escort in and out of harbour, I've read about extra ship reports/harbour content - is that in commander?. I really want to enhance this sim as I keep coming back to it, I'd love to get the graphics/ships your shots show. Anyone feeling sorry for me I would be grateful for their help. I'd really like help on multiplay, did antything come of the interface with Destroyer Command?. .
Here's my biased suggestion, though I know alot of others will give you the same answer...
get GWX: the biggest most awesomest mod out there.
This is where most of the stuff you've seen in screenshots has come from. If all you've known so far is stock SH3 than this will make a whole world of difference. I can't even begin to list all the changes and additions.
You might want to check out the manual for a more in depth description:

in the case of the not necessarily computer proficient it would be good to
understand what it is you want,
In general there are two types of mod players as far as I can tell
the conservatives and the radicals shall we call them
Now a conservative is trying to create conditions that simulate
living history, call this what was.
the radicals are more what if's
I am a bit of both, as a student of history I totally love SH3 for the same reasons as the conservatives.
but as a gamer I understand the nature of the radicals
when I play I play conservative when campaigning and radical is more
for missions in my case.
GWX provides an excellent Historical Background built on SH3 and I use it
I also override undermine it and rewrite if for my purposes as a pariah
in the case of GWX this was much harder to figure out than the original game.
there are many mods to give what you need and even many mission files available hereabouts at subsim, but you have to know what you want.
spysat mods will give you touch with every convoy, enhanced campaign files over load escorts, enhanced ai makes tougher escorts, extra guns torps power speed are all out there.
what is good is to look around for a week or two try things out ask questions form your own opinions. I have a sub that under the right
circumstances could sink an imperial star destroyer in orbit.
but that may not help you if your a conservative exclusively.
What I do is I take a basic package mod, these days GWX and I add in what mods I want to it. best of both worlds.
it is a very very very good idea in the case of the loving player, computer
wise or not, to be bothered learning how to manually install a mod without
JSGME their are things that you will have to do in support of mods like new ships where by you will have to make entries that JSGME wont. this isnt a big deal or hard to learn, just dont tell yourself you cant do it.
take your time shop around ask your fellow sub drivers what they like, if you find any that like what you do, ask them what they use.
Id recommend Sergebutos mod page and if you dont use GWX after all
I would then absolutely recommend his Air attacks mod part 1
damage mods and wake mods and sound mods add to immersion and are worth it for the ambiance, wether pariah or purist.
most people have links in their signatures to file front pages with their favorite mods or mods theyve made or shared in the development of.
click your way through these as you meet people.
above all read threads and stickys above all.
among the stickies youll locate tweaking tools that are fairly easy to use.
