View Full Version : Officer station swaying motion

Hey guys,
Notice how the swaying motion of the boat stops when you take over the officer stations (sitting at the sonar or lying in the captains bunk). I'm guessing they did this on purpose so we can better concentrate on the instruments.
The boat motion also stops with the binoculars. Any easy way to enable this? I think it would be much better and realistic this way.
Thks!

Its just for the Periscope...
The UZO and the Binocular is always "fixed"... (too bad...)

Perhaps some binoc swaying would be acceptable but certainly not as much as, say, the periscope does. When you're holding binocs your muscular control can continually make minute adjustments to keep the image steady. ...Or steadier than would appear through a periscope which is affixed to the boat.
With that in mind the image in the UZO should sway just as much as the image in the periscope since it's fixed to the boat as well and not subject to as many minute corrective adjustments as hand held binoculars.

I just think it would be really cool to just lay down on the kaptains bunk and have the wave motion while 'j'attendrai' plays on the gramophone.
I wish it was a simple .ini change, anybody have sugestions on what to try changing?
Anybody knows if the officer stations are hardcoded and can't be changed?

The UZO was attached to a stabilizing device, it would have been near impossible to use otherwise.

Can you post a link for info. regarding this ? :hmm:
I would really like to see a device that compensate for 4 meter high waves..

Yes please. We've had several conversations on this subject. I insist that there was no stabilization until the very end of the war, and then only on US battleship fire control systems. Others insist I'm wrong, but no one has yet shown any actual reference.
If it was stabilized, how was it done? Official sources please.

Wouln't a simple picture of the thing mounted, show if there was a stabalize mechanism?
And where are all the mod experts out there...nobody can tell me if I can get my Kaptains bunk to move!?

The ship also doesn't sway when you are in the interior free cam (Shift + F2) mode.
Here is some UZO (UberwasserZielOptik) Pics:

As you can see, there is no stabilizing unit attached to the UZO itself. The question that remains, is: Was the mounting itself stabilized? I have taken the liberty to e-mail the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and asked them if they can shed some light on this issue. I will post the reply here asap.

Found this old thread while searching for other things. Was the question ever answered. I would swear i read that the UZO was stabilized but that was a few years ago and I am older now and do not remember :ping: I have been searching through my books and although I have yet to find written confirmation there are a few pictures that seem to show that the mounting bracket may have allowed for stabilization.Specifically in the book "U-Boat War Patrol " The Hidden Photographic Diary of U 564 by L Paterson, on p. 71, you can see the base mounting apparatus for the UZo that looks as if it would allow the binocs to tilt forward and backwards with the pitching of the boat as well as shift left to right with the rolling. It is not a perfect system but does allow for some stabilization of the view.

With DDs open hatch mods the officers/bunk views are already destabilized. Not the uzo/binoculars though.
