... an off topic random question...

... do British subs put there sonar operators in a seperate "sonar room" like some American subs, or do the sonar operators sit in the control room with the other control center personel (like the US Virginia class)?

Anyone know? thanks.

I'm pretty sure that Oberon SSKs had seperate sonar rooms, so it's probably the same of the Traffies, Swifties and Vanguards. Whether the Astute will, or whether she'll go the Virginia way...I'm not sure.

Why do they have those awful seat covers?

Hm.. interesting...

its hard to make stuff out, but it looks like the consoles are the wall are firecontrol consoles (as opposed to sonar consoles). Funny how there's an entire section of the control center thats empty and removed from the periscope operators view.... perhaps those are the weapon control panels. :hmm:

''Trafalgar Class Submarine Control Room.

This is where the submarine is controlled from. In addition to ship manoeuvring equipment this compartment also contains navigation systems; search and attack periscopes and weapons control panels.''

The Sonars have fled to the head - they're not photogenic !

Oh here they are : http://www.rina.org.uk/rfiles/warship/sat_march03.pdf
