View Full Version : GWX Official Update Delayed.
Kpt. Lehmann
01-25-07, 09:01 AM
:damn: :damn: :damn: Since I'm apparently famous for announcing delays... why break with tradition.
I've got big trouble.
I need a little sleep before I can be more descriptive... and may be faced with downtime as I may have to leave my PC at the shop for several days.
I've been working on my PC all night.
SH3 and / or GWX shut down unpredictably... and I'm getting windows errors.
I've also had sudden re-boots in-game.
This is a show stopper for me dammit.
I can only run SH3 for a few minutes at a time.
I've completely uninstalled SH3 and Re-installed it twice... patched to 1.4b etc.
I'm not doing anything I haven't done a hundred times.
This really concerns me. I won't stop until I figure things out... but it will likely cost me several days downtime.
I don't see how we can release the Jan 31st update on time.
Looks like it will be entirely my fault for the delay... just as I was getting back into the swing of things!
The delay may also be dictated by the potential monetary cost of repair if necessary.
In the meantime, GWX Dev team and beta testers, please watch for developments back at the Wolves Den.

Good luck mate.:sunny:
Don't let it get you down.
No problem, we can wait a bit.
Sounds to me like your HDD is getting ready to crap out on you. Back it up asap, if you can, to an external HDD. Believe me, it can die without making the slightest noise that something is about to happen. CTDs like you're having can be the first sign.
Good luck Kpt., you're going to need it by the sounds of things. And GET some rest too! ;)

Yes, sounds like a bad HD....had that too, a couple of months back, and the same issues with Windows and SH3.
I bought a new HD, and everything is fine again.

It's not necessarily a bad HD, have a look at this diagnosis:
If the system runs fine without playing SH3 its not a bad HD problem, more likely a GPU problem. I had this once. My pc started making strange noises after 10 or so minutes playing SH3. It's very strange, you can surf the net, do everything as long as you don't play GPU intensive games. So, took my vacuum cleaner, got the Video card out, cleaned it, cleaned the fans, made sure that the intake and exaust air grids were clean of dust and voilā everything back to normal.
That could be a possiblity too, If you're not running on a laptop that is.

Sometimes those things u discribe happen when there is a conflict between Starforce and the Software of the Graphic Card. Hab the same Probs with my old PC which had a Nvidia GPU the Problems came when I installed a new DVD Burner and Updated the GPUs SW to the newest version Windows and SF than had a conflict with the Software of the GPU and the DVD-Burner....

Windows errors and sudden reboots?
smells like XP smashed himself again
I dont think this is a Hardware error
more of an Windows screw up
sudden reboot means one thing
Screen Of Death
1)to de-activate that Windows Automaticly reboots do the following things
RIGHT click on My PC
click Properties
Click advanced properties (somthing with advanced ''spanish computer here)
Click Recover&reboot options (spanish language interfering)
untab the ''Reboot automaticly''
launch SH3 and let the f*cker crash
now it wont reboot but it will stick onto the Screen of death.
mostly if its a Driver software thats seem to be screwed up a file must appear with the extension .sys
otherwise, just formatate the bunch (back the files up you want to save before doing it) and normally everything must be fine.
2) How hot is ur CPU running at? (you can check this by pressing ''del'' at starting up windows) you will be in Bios and there is a tab that show some data of the health of ur computer
or
download a program called ''everest Home'' this is a full scale PC monitor that allows u to show u everything. there is a Feature with sensors there under it will show u the temperature as well.
if he is too hot for ur liking
open the case
clean the Fans and the big metal thing that is to cool the CPU (do this carefully)
get rid of that dust inside the case it causes the extra heat inside the computer
just some things to try before the ultimatum
Go to ErrorKiller.com and get their program. I have it for 2 computers(29.99) and it's fixed some major problems with the registry. You'll be surprised at wht it finds and can fix.
If it's not the HDD them it has to do with SHIII seeing his other games are ok. And I think I have an idea what the problem is... tho I can't say it here. ;) Yes I can.... tooo much porn. :rotfl:

Hi GT182, you have PM.
Thanks for your concern everyone. I'll get things sorted. Buying a USB HD for data backup is looking attractive no matter what the problem is... so I may do that when I exhaust my bag of tricks.
I've ruled out heat problems... and I've always been good about keeping her clean.
I've cut out the random CTD's by totally uninstalling all my SH3 stuff and re-installing it.
I think the HD itself is actually okay... I'm leaning towards a windows problem.
Infact... I don't think its any of my hardware going south... just yet.
These problems started immediately after installing the new DVD burner drive and its software.
Honestly, I've been too focused on GWX and U-boat related stuff to do any "questionable surfing" LOL.
I'm taking a bit of a break from the fixes ATM... just awoke after a 22 hour marathon "find the problem" session... I'm pooped.

It seems to be a RAM problem... Probably you RAM block(s) has some memory location(s) corrupted?
Try removing once a time the block(s) and verify if SH3 works fine with only one block...
In this case the removed one is faulty.
Hope to be helpful, bye
Mith.

:damn: :damn: :damn: StarForce!!!:damn: :damn: :damn:
I hate being correct about this.
Well, its not that.
I also no longer think that it is Windows or my HD.
I've cured the random CTD's by doing some pretty general stuff... however I can only run SH3 for about 10 minutes with low FPS performance... before my PC completely reboots.
It also does this with IL2 FB/Pacific Fighters.
I'm thinking the processor, motherboard, power supply, or one of my RAM sticks is going south.
...am putting my PC back in the shop again for a FULL diagnostic work-up Monday... Hopefully, it will narrow down to one of those elements... and I can replace it.
I may test the RAM myself today.
This stuff is wearing me out. Very disheartening. I may be down from 7 to 30 days depending on the expense.
...but I ain't quittin' 'til she's fixed!!! :stare:
My PC just doesn't realize how stubborn I am.
Unfortunately, for the duration... I won't be of much use here. Sorry guys.

LOL, you should see my crappy pay. A new PC is out of the question.
If you want good money in Texas... stay away from emergency services... especially EMS.
Put that with the sudden upturn in the cost of living...
Extra stuff like PC upkeep turn into a real challenge.
We are always short-handed though. I've already volunteered for some extra shifts... but it will be some time before I get to see the benefits for doing so. :shifty:
The main thing for me is just finding out what the real problem is... and then I can go to town on getting it taken care of.
Not knowing definitively what the problem is... is the worst part.

Normally you get a disk with your computer that will reformat the whole hard drive and sometimes it offers up repair. Repair should not erase your things. Attempt the repair if you have this option. Before I would go to the shop and if able, burn everything to disks that you want to save, attempt an entire reformat of the hard drive.
What do you think?

I could do that... but I prefer it to be done professionally...
First I want a full diagnostic. I may not have to reformat at all.
If I wasn't so tired... I'd list everything I've done to rule stuff out here... but I just got home from work. Gotta sleep.

What about Paypal for a donation system ?Great! That'll do just fine. Kpt. Lehmann (or an authorised associate) would have to set up a Paypal account and post a link on here wouldn't he? In fact, that would reqiure a secure and designated thread, would it not? I'm not that knowledgable about these things. However, discussing it this openly and relying on the 'goodwill' of the people, does diminish the charm I had originally concieved, but I guess the internet is largely devoid of charm, technology usually is. Create a folder on your desktop called GWX
When you download GWX and it asks you where you want to save
Save it to the GWX folder
Then you know where it is
Have all parts download into that one folder
What have you added to your SH3 to make it crash in museum ?

Kpt. Lehmann, usually a bad processor or mobo results in a hard lock that won't even respond to the "reset" button. Constant reboots can be anywhere from a powersupply issue, to a software issue.
Try this as it may help. There have been issues caused by XP's DEP program. I have completely disabled it, and no more goofy problems with a lot games.
Scroll down to the DEP change in the second post. If you've already done this, disreguard. Hope it helps!

Thanks mate. That site requires registration though... and I'm off to the PC store within the hour to have all my hardware tested... It'll be some days before I am back up again. If it isn't hardware as the cause, at least I'll have peace of mind there and know what to do.
The reboots are becoming much more frequent.
Have you also checked for virus and other malwares?
If you only did it with one anti-virus software, you should also do it with other ones.

Yep, tried that too.
Salute! guys.
See you soon I hope.
There's still work to be done.
I think 3 possibilities:
1. CPU (or fan), 2. GPU (or fan), 3. maybe power supply
Maybe a driver issue too but in this case I donīt think that this is one.
Last week I have had the same probs on my old second PC (which is the one in my network connected to the internet)...after 10-15 mins turned on suddenly a bit strange noise appeared and sudden reboots happened...has had sound like a bit of a fan failure (I figured it out in the end that is was in fact one)....
Removed all hardware starting with RAM...tested whether one bank of the three was gone. But still sudden reboots even when I donīt have made anything on the PC....Then continued with with the case fans but this all were ok, even the cpu fan was ok and the cpu heat (checked) was ok too. Then as the PC has had run for 10 mins again...the noise came again....and I figured it out that this has had come from the graphic card....watched the GPU fan and it has turned slow and made the noise....I think the motor of the fan has been gone....turned the pc off inserted another GC (same model) and woala PC works again....now itīs turned on for nearly 6 days without turning off, without noise and without sudden reboots.
But when the problem has occured right after inserting a new DVD Burner, then I donīt think itīs the GPU. I think Power Supply is the first adress....Donīt know whether the DVD Burner needs to much power or not (more than the drive which was installed before)

Kpt,
Go to Micro$oft's website, and do a search for DEP. There are instructions there to turn it off. There have been issues with some games, and other applications that cause all kinds of weird anomolies that drive folks nuts. And by turning it off, the issues go away. It even helps to smooth out some games that were jumpy, and unstable before.
Sorry, I forgot about the registration requirement at Shockwave, they did it to cut down on those $@%$&*!$#$%^&* spammers.
If you're still plagued with the constant reboot problem, your symptoms almost mirror mine when my old, and tired P3 gave up the ghost. The mobo, and processor, and hd all pretty much gave out together. Heck it was 8 years old, and bound to happen, since I like to push my rigs to the limit where I can.
Kpt. Lehmann,
I have just recalled that I had a similar problem some years ago when I installed my first CD burner. The computer rebooted every now and then, and specifically it rebooted when playing a GPU intensive game. Finally, I discovered that it was due to the power supply unit (PSU): it was not powerfull enough to feed my computer with the new additions. I bought a new PSU (able to provide more watts), and the problem was fully solved !!!
