Seeing Pictures of German WWII Harbours I realited that the Harbours in SHIII are missing one really large Part of Harbour atmosphere by not showing Docks an such things. As we can t change the Harbours in their appearence atm by ourselves we can only add ships and other floating objects to them.
So my Idea is why dont we construct the floating parts of the ship Production Sites in large harbours to add them to the existing harbours.....
That would include the constrution of several ponton Barges filled with coal , swimming docks of different sizes maybe one with 100m, with 200m and with 300m length and two or three different kinds of swimming cranes.....

Just an idea but I think it is worth consindering this option.....

Not strictly true that harbours cant be modded - If you have GWX look in

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\MissionEditor\L ocations

Look at Penang
The look at KielCanalPort - which is Penang cut down
KielCanalDock is the same as KielCanalPort but without most of the buildings

Its ambitous. and how many of us will sail into the correct harbours for the
ambiance, if the fight is in the gap. admittedly though the very first sailing orders for d day were the escorts for the mulberries, maybe the dday moddelling types would want to do it.

If you mean the top picture, looks like Scharnhorst or Gneisenau.

Those are floating drydocks. Obviously the purpose is to submerge under a ship and then surface, lifting the ship out of the water for hull inspection and repair.

No, neither the game nor any mods have those...yet.

I know thats the reason why I want to promote the idea of building those dry docks for the habor atmosphere.....

Dry Docks, ramps for launching ships, marinas (DivingDuck is working on one), huge ships in dry dock or under construction on land, and so on.

The list goes on.

I think the best way to do it would be to make a new harbour altogether, with shipyard buildings, ships under construction, and so on. Call it "ShipyardHarbour" or "IndustrialHarbour" or something. It'd go great with the "Industry" city block already in the game.

Is there a harbour editing tutorial someplace? Not that you should be expecting anything major from me, I'm just wondering.

That is exactlly the problem no one ever figured out how to change the whole harbors. The floating dry docks are only the first step to create a more relistic harbor atmosphere but one that can be done by the 3d modders since it is basicly the same as building a very large ship....

Isn't it technically possible to make new harbours from scratch and implement them either as locations.cfg entries or as static land/sea units?

Yes technically its possible to create new harbours
As I said earlier Ref has altered the stock Penang by removing parts of the harbour to make KielCanalPort ( Brunsbuettal in GWX )
With the understanding of how to do that it should be possible to create a new one

Not a problem adding to locations.cfg
