Brings back memories of when I was in the navy in the late seventies...in very adverse weather conditions you would see the bow of the ship go under the surface and sometimes it could take 20 or so seconds for it to appear again :o

You could make a flight of stairs in 3 steps if you timed it right.

This is an Atlantic storm right ?

No, this is, Lake Superior, very cold, fresh water. There was always some minor animosity between fresh and salt water sailors...I never understood why. From a physical standpoint, each kind of liquid can drown a man just as dead.

Maybee you should ask how big is the lake?

350 miles long by 160 miles wide!!

Superier is the largest fresh water lake in the world.

Some of the ships that ply their trade on the Great Lakes are 1000 footers(300m)...more common size are 183m to 216m.

For some reason or other I can just visualize a contest between two men, chained to the bow of the ship in this storm, to see who can withstand the abuse the longest.

Naturally, neither of them would survive.

The Great Lakes can be extremely dangerous, shipwrecks litter the bottoms of all of the lakes, and have most often been caused by misjudging the weather, which can get very very bad as you can see from the pictures. Also, the Lakes can act in ways not normally seen in the oceans, in Lake Michigan a sort of lake tsunami called a Seiche (http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/isgshome/seiche_info.htm) has killed plenty of people both on the shore and on the water. Ice is also a big issue in the winter, the Canadian and US Coast Guards both maintain a big icebreaker on the lakes to facilitate shipping and the USCG also maintains a few smaller tugs and bouy tenders that can break ice as well.

IIRC (which I often don't) Convoy PQ17 had 3 'Lakers' which transferred from lake Superior and sailed for England, can't remember if they got there and can't find any of my books:oops: . (needed one for the French big gun sub on another thread)

Some Info from the Net... Good Read...
That was all in my fourth link.

Also, it's a good idea to post a link to where you get something, so people don't think you put it together yourself.

Come on bandi...don't feel like that matey...I'm sure all that Steve meant was that it is a good idea to let people know where you source your info from because it also gives them a head start in enquiring further. :yep:
Two quick points:
1)Steve's an okay kind of guy...he's been around a lot longer than most and during that time he's been very supportive and informative to not only the forum but also to all the folk who use this forum. :yep:
2) Your participation on this forum is very much welcomed here...this is a friendly forum and the folk here will and do appreciate your contributions. :yep:
We all...everyone of us...began here at some point or other. :yep:
Keep yer chin up  and..................................SINK EM ALL!! :arrgh!:

Sorry for the disruption here on the Forum...

I have been here at subsim and receiving the
subsim news letter for years, I just have not
signed up or posted... TY for your patients...

I will still be around, and if there is something
I can post that is informative, I will still do so...

Thanks Again...

Bandi--

Speaking as a retired military veteran, don't pay any attention to perceived disagreement, anger, harsh comment, or otherwise rudeness on anyone's part here on a public forum. There is a broad spectrum of diverse input, some brilliant, some not so...but, thats the nature of the brute.

...all comers are alway welcome. Without participation from the least of us, this little get-away from reality, would cease to exist. So, please stay and keep alive the memory of the one who appears in your signature.

edit: Everytime you post, you wave Ben's flag. It reminds everyone subliminally of the sacrafice others have paid so that Americans can breath freely.

cheers,
