View Full Version : Modeling Question

I finally got great images of the K-Ship gondola to finish this part of my model
but I have a question.
I need to do the glass areas and want to do them like the aircraft canopies in GWX.
I'm not haveing any luck as yet but I'm also not UV mapping with 3ds Max, yet.
Do I need to map the glass areas in Max after I assign it a glass material?
Or is my Paint Shop Pro broke and doing the Alpha Channel wrong?
All I get is a black area that the sun shines through even if I assign the whole model
a glass material in Max then export.

The alpha channel in SH3 textures isn't used for transparency (:o ), it's a sort of shine map, you should check with sergbuto, he's made some cabin's glass transparent in one of his ships.

Yes, the Wildcat and a few others in GWX are his correct?
I got a feeling it's the materials are not transfering right using a
freebie UV mapper.
I have a video tutorial on the Max UV mapping, I just haven't got
a chance to try and learn it as yet.
Wife says finishing the room remodel comes first!:o
Rule around here is:
If Momma ain't happy,
Ain't NOBODY happy!:nope:

This is the front crew I'd like to place behind the front glass.
They are out of the crew dat file. I just adjusted the poses.

Moin,

opacity settings will not be transferred from any 3d programme. You might try this approach:

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9996/hexeditingopacityky9.jpg

The red marked value is normally set to FF. Change it to 80, and this is what youŽll get:

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/3773/opacity001si1.jpg

You donŽt even need an A-channel.

Regards,
DD

sergbuto

Yes, you can change the opacity setting for the corresponding TGA in the DAT file in question, (as indicated by DivingDuck). This is done by hex-editing the DAT file.

Thank you very much Gents.
Of all the Hex editing info I've found in the threads
I must have missed this bit of info.:nope:

BTW how is your progress on your work with the model of theK-ship ?

Madox58
01-19-07, 11:32 AM
Going real good!
Now that I can "Glass" it, I can finish the crew placement.
Took awhile to find the images I needed to get a really good
model that looks like the real deal.
And am getting much better with 3ds Max!
I have all weapons and equipment specs now also.:o
I also have a good handle on how they were used
which will make them all the more realistic.

Here's the front Crew members positions. Top guy is the front gunner. Lowest guy is the spotter. Note he has Binoculars now.

Looks great when in the ship is ready it will really make a great addition to the SHIII world. BTW maybe you could later also make the Blimps that were used un german Blockade Runners....

Madox58
01-19-07, 05:52 PM
Do you have a link to a site that shows them?
I never heard of them but I'm no expert by any means.
I do see a lot of the Goodyear ships as I live roughly 60 miles from
Akron. I've also visited the hangers there in the past.

chris911

First one more to come...

Madox58

It would be real easy to re-do the Barrage Balloon for that.

chris911
01-19-07, 06:18 PM
Yup but i think it would be more of a problem to get it to move in a realistic way...

Madox58
01-19-07, 06:21 PM
If it can be attached from another dat with the node trick?
No problem.
You shoud see the Barrage Balloons bobbing in the wind!

chris911
01-19-07, 06:29 PM
BTW I just looked for Blimps the US used during WW2, there was another larger one than the K-ship the M-ship 4 were built during the war but I couldn t find a single Pic :-?

Madox58
01-19-07, 06:33 PM
Yes. The M Ship came in late. I've got quite a few shots of it.
Also the L Ships.
I'm trying to find out which one rocketed the U-853 was it?
Off the Jersey coast.

Ummm the pic you posted is of the Sperrbrecher
Anti mine escort ship for leading the uboats and surface ships out of port

Could do with the ship on the end of the balloon :rotfl:

chris911
01-19-07, 06:41 PM
You are right. But those Blimps were used on quite some ships so if it can be added to already existing Models like the Commerce Raiders and the Blockade Runner that would be a nice add on...

Madox58
01-19-07, 06:42 PM
Well BBW, If the Balloon can be attached through a node
It would work and I've already got it bobbing and weaveing!

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 07:02 PM
If the model is one piece it can be added to any free node
If no free ones it is possible to add a new node for it

Madox58
01-19-07, 07:10 PM
COOL!
It is a one piece model.
Very small file size also so FPS don't get hit hard.

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 07:14 PM
Nice one
You will notice the aircraft on cruisers are a one piece model too

As the barrage balloon needs no sound it should be fine mate

Your blimp I take it is a model of more than one part
Especially if its having crew and guns and sound etc

Rowi did make a model of the Sperrbrecher
You could have tried the barrage on that if I could find it

Madox58
01-19-07, 07:23 PM
Several parts on the K-Ship, yes.
Although I won't go into detail as yet on it.:smug:
I'd like everyone to be excited to go look for one when it comes out.
And the shots I post are the rough test models!
They suck you in......
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 07:34 PM
Well they certainly do that

A thought just occurs
I wonder if its possible to add the barrage to a Dat of its own
That way it can be added through the ships loadouts
No new ships needed but through the mission ed you can choose wetherto add the ballon or not
:hmm:

Madox58
01-19-07, 07:40 PM
The Barrage is a dat on it's own.
I've done it several ways in testing.
For ship attachment it needs to be in the Library folder right?:hmm:

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 07:44 PM
Should have guessed it was :damn:
Yes needs to go into the Library
Then a loadout for one of the ships needs adapting

The normal mercs dont have loadouts as such - the guns etc are added through the eqp

A bit unrealistic but for now you can test with the LCMAL
That has a few loadout options already so it will be a simple thing to add another

Madox58
01-19-07, 07:52 PM
LCMAL in GWX?
I DON"T screw with my GWX install!!
Bad enuff I hammer my SH3 test version for now!
I'm STILL on my first patrol in GWX!:rotfl:
Slowly cruising the Keil Canal and doing the Eye Candy trip!
And you all got me scared of LEAVING the Kiel! :o

Where's that CHICKEN thing for my Boat?

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 07:55 PM
Are you testing in a stock install then ?

Madox58
01-19-07, 08:00 PM
I've got a few mods installed on the test version.
Once I get good results there I'll start on the compatability.
Plus I'm still looking hard at the GWX files.
Lots to learn right there! :o
Kinda like comparing a canoe to a warship shall we say?
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 08:06 PM
Well here is the LCMAL in JSGME format that you can add to the test install

http://www.mediafire.com/?3jnz0ung0tm

Has a Barrage loadout added to the Sea folder cfg and also all the items added to the eqp
In the eqp folder scroll down to near the bottom - Barrage loadout - and swop out any of the gun or light link names for the balloons linkname

The linkname is the name on the node of your ballon inside the Dat - the one to go into the library folder

Does that make sense lol

Madox58
01-19-07, 08:21 PM
OK. I got the D/L
Will go through it and contact you by PM if I run into trouble.
I'll try to get it done tonight or tomorrow.
Still got to finish the room remodel or my wife will see to it
that my boat is sunk! :o

bigboywooly
01-19-07, 08:22 PM
No problem
Am off to bed myself
1am here and at work at 6 :rotfl:

Sweet mate
Cool
Now it will be possible to add them on the loadouts for ships so they can have them in port

Well done mate
A great addition

Good grief! Does this game ever stop getting better? More accurate ship wakes? Blimps escorting convoys and barrage balloons over harbors?

I'm really looking forward to SH4, but I'll still be playing this one for years to come.

down and out
01-20-07, 08:12 PM
That looks great
Can they be added to any ship ?

Madox58
01-20-07, 08:19 PM
They are setup so they can be added as a loadout yes.:yep:

bigboywooly
01-20-07, 08:42 PM
Ok so now we know it works I will do a few more loadouts for other ships and let you have sometime tomorrow

Hey priater, how on earth did you get the bobbing effect to work with the balloon? :o I assumed that you were going to leave the cable modeled as a rigid object hanging straight down from the balloon envelope...

Little story about Goodyear Blimps and the trouble they can cause.
Was building a deck a few years ago and a lady next door was out sunning
at her pool. She was a bit on the plump side by the way.
I spotted one of the Goodyears going over and yelled to the rest of the crew.
"Hey! Look at the Blimp!"
I think you can picture the misunderstanding from there!

OK, Back on topic.
Where would I look for a wind effect?
In other words, if you look at the pics of the barrage balloons
posted in this thread,
You should notice they face different directions.
Depending on where they are attached they take that points
directional instructions is my guess.
I'm wondering if that can be fixed so they actually face into the wind
at all times. :hmm:
Which would be the case in real life. :yep:
I don't need to know how to do it, I just need a pointer to something that
may be affected by the wind.
I am looking at the Particals files to see if smoke and such is affected by
the wind.

You guys blow me away, skins, sounds and now blimps what next?

I think I have seen early war photos of blimps on convoys, can this be done or are you only bothering with ships in harbours? And can they be anchored to buildings or only ships.
I think blimps were an early war thing and gradually fazed out, at least the tethered variety, I could be wrong, you do see footage of D Day landings with blimps all over the place.

Also: Where did Rowi's Flak Battery ship come from, I've not seen that either, reminds me of a depot ship with moored UBoats I saw over at the German SH3 website a while back I think they even had it ready for download though I could never get it to work, any boday else see that?

Other thing those blimps that were fixed on the german ships does anyone know if they were used against Air attacks or were they used as look out ?

I'm remapping both the K-Ship and Barrage balloon now.
So I'll get you a shot in the next day or 2.

As far as I know the units attached to ships were mainly to discourage low level
air attacks.
Still researching on those.
