I just had a fresh install of the game + GWX, but now when I start a new carreer, I only get 500 instead of 1500 renown. Where can I change some things so I passed naval academy without doing it all over again? And what files do I have to alter to have a bit more renown, so I can buy all the upgrades for my new sub? It sucks to start in '43 with a VIIc so new, it doenst even have the proper hydrophone...

Go to C\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg and open up (with notepad) the Naval Academy file then alter it like this and you will get 1500 renown

Exam1=true

That's strange. I did a 2nd install with GWX and didn't go thru the Academy or take the tests. I started my first patrol with 1500 points just as if I'd gone thru the Academy.

Did you transfer the previous careers in the new My Documents\SH3 directory? If you have one career in the directory the game access that has gone through the Naval Accademy then all careers in that directory will get renown without having to do the tutorials.

What about adding extra renown, can it be done with fiddling with the .cfg?

I recently returned to SH3 after a long absence. I performed a clean install + patch 1.4 + GWX + "GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr" and began a new career. After taking four of the five exams and passing all of them with "Excellent" comments from my instructor, I noticed that the Academy main screen only credited my candidate with passing the navigation and deck gun exams. I repeated the erroneous exams successfully a number of times and yield the same faulty results.

I then followed your suggestion and rewrote the notepad file for my captain, saved the changes and yet it continued to state that my captain hadn't passed the recorded exams though in the process of peforming each one of them I was told in the message files that I'd passed with flying colors.

Frustrated, I deleted and uninstalled everything and began with fresh installations of all the software. This time, I didn't bother with the Academy at all and went straight to notepad to edit the Academy document just as you instructed in this post yet my captain's record in the Academy continues to state that he hasn't passed or taken any of the exams as yet.

Can anyone tell what, if anything, I've done wrong here to cause this problem or how I may possibly correct this issue? :damn:

Everything looks good, except, where is the GWX 1.03 Patch?

Clean Install + 1.4b Patch + GWX + GWX 1.03 Patch + GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr. FYI, roll back SH3Cmdr + disable mods etc. If a rollback is not performed an uninstall of SH3 may not be sufficient to correct problems.

I don't know if this will solve your problem but it's a start.

If, for whatever reason, you don't get the correct renown after taking the Academy, you can edit the 'deltarenown' figure found in the patrol config files in your save folder in My Documents. It will be specific for each career name you have.

Thanks for the assistance danlisa (from New England to Merry Old England). I managed to somehow miss the 1.03 patch during the first go-round, but followed all of your suggestions during my latest re-install. However, it yielded the same results.

I first tried opening SH3 from its own folder and entered the Academy simply as "Player". I succesfully completed the Navigation exam yet when I returned to the main exam screen I wasn't credited with having taken the exam (let alone passing said exam).

I closed SH3, opened SH3 Commander and began a new career with my Captain's name. I then opened SH3 software using SH3 Commander. Seeing my Captain's name and new career registered in the SH3 software, I closed SH3 and SH3 Commander and opened the Naval Academy's "notepad" file and edited the numeric values and exchanged the "true" for the "false" and saved the file with these changes.

I then activated the SH3 Commander software (Note; when I first used the software to begin my Captain's new career, I was able to choose between the "1st., 2nd. and, I believe, the 7th./13th. flotilla's, but the next use lists the options as; Weddigen, Saltzwedel, and Wegener). As before, it continues to list my new Capitain as having not participated in any of the Naval Academy exams.

So, perhaps I'll simply begin my career without the additional renoun gained from the Naval Academy and check to see if it is possible to ammend the value once I'm out to sea on my first mission.

Finally, I just want to take another opportunity to praise the SubSim Community and especially the contributing MOD'ers for their wonderful work. Gaming hooked me on computers years ago and after hundreds of purchases of such software, it is the MOD Community of SH3 that have made this particular Sim the best purchase I ever made of all of those.

Thanks again one and all!
