It looks great. I especially like how the areas near the holes (drainage holes?) are more heavily rusted since water would have been seeping out all the time - great attention to detail.

Seth,

I reckon you've got a an excellent grip on that splinter camouflage scheme, I haven't been able to create that effect yet, all I can do is the chip paint and full colour effect at this stage :shifty:

I'm using Paint Pro 7, what about you :hmm:

Photoshop 7 here! This is how i do it:
Just find a nice color on google pictures (search for "grey" or any other color), and open the pic. Then right click and "copy picture". Then in PS: mark an area, no matter where, and "paste" the pic into it. The pic of the color will be on top of everything, but dont worry! Use the polygonal lasso tool to draw a triangle or a quadrat in the colored area, anything you like. Press Ctrl+C to copy the selection. Mark another area outside the colored one, and paste the selection into that. Place it over the uboat texture where you want it to be, then double click on the layer in the layer window to select blend modes etc. I used the "overlay" blend mode on the camo scheme for this paint. Hope this was helpful, im not good in explaning in such technical terms... If Anvart, fubar, danlisa or some other excellent skinner can explain this in an easier way, please do so..!

There's no need to search Google for colours, PS & PSP have all the colours under the sun. However if your happy with this way then continue but this is what I do.

Just like _Seth_ said, Use a selection tool to mark out an area on your U-Boat texture, then goto Edit > Fill > Fill with Colour. A popup box with all the possible colours will appear, just drag the selector around until you have the colour you want and click OK.

Now every time you choose fill the same colour will be applied to your selection.

If you want to change the colour then go through the same proceedure and choose another colour.

Then just continue with the blend options.

I dunno, "It's done when it's done!" sounds suspciously like, "When it's done" which I beleive is a trademark Logo of 3DRealms. :rotfl:

To get the angles you will need to use a Selection Tool which allows you place points on your image and then finish the selection by returning to your first point. I think you use PSP and I'm not familiar with that programs way of selection. But in Photoshop the tool is called Polygonal Lasso.

Seth, is there a possibility, that you add Fubar-style rivets to this great looking skin?
They have a unique 3D-look.

Suppose Fubar wants to share his knowledge....maybe he has a (photoshop-) layer for you, containing the rivets for this Uboat-type.

Not dumb at all! If you have JSGME, just unrar the file and put the folder "Real VIIC" into the SHIII\mods folder, then enable. If not, just place the .tga files into the SHIII (or your install directory)\data\textures\Tnormal\tex folder.

You guys are too kind... Thanx for the kind words (You are allowed to criticise too, you know..;) Anything that could make the next skin better..!)
@Gateordad: First, welcome to subsim, mate!

@ Gator & Gruber: :up:For the IXC/IXB, i have to chat with my mentor danlisa (If he reads this, maybe he could give me some inputs..;). IIRC, the IXC uses .dat files for some points of the skinning process. I dont want to mess around with .dat files in GWX, before i completly understand their workabouts. The type VII boats are the only one that can be skinned using only .tga files placed in the Tnormal\tex folder. These boats are "safe" to reskin!

Hello Seth,

way to go ser, that is one very nice skin indeed, the trouble we have with reference pictures from the era is that everything is in B/W and we can't know for sure if the weathering is rust or if it's algea of some sort.

Don't forget that the German navy was a very disciplined army, and I wonder if they would let their boats get in the shape that your skin reflects it. No offence it is a very nice skin. I've posted some screenshots of a book I have at home, to rest my case.

http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/2889/viicyl2.jpg
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/4143/untitled3dx5.jpghttp://img178.imageshack.us/img178/3199/viic2ev0.jpg

I guess, for they eye candy department I would choose your skin. But I 'm a historical accuracy fanatic, so won't be using it. This skin could however very well be possible on boats of the IX type wich went on long patrols without seeing port, but then the weathering would still be of the algeae type.

Anyway, like I said, no offence, nice work, astonishing :o

Syxx_Killer
01-11-07, 09:32 AM
That is a great looking skin, Seth! I like it. However, I notice that the decking that covers the snorkel is a different color. No offense, but it looks a little odd to me. Think you can make that look like the rest of the deck? Btw, I like the addition of seagull poo.:lol:

_Seth_
01-11-07, 09:33 AM
@Dertien: No offence taken, mate!! People are entitled to have their opinions!!! Thats the way it should be!!! I agree with you that the long range boats would see more weathering! I wouldnt be the one scraping rust or algea of a IXC alone!!:o
This VIIC is loosely based upon a model made by Ian ..... (dont remember his last name, sorry):
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4358/iansviic027editxl2.jpg

I tried to copy this skin, and i added some camo & algea. Not entirely historical correct, but suitable for us Kaleuns who enjoy some harbour time with a cup of coffee, a woman and a good film on TV. ...:yep:
I appreciate your feedback, mate, and i will truly look into the algeas when im doing some IXB/IXC boats!:up:

@ Syxx: Yes, i know... Bernard used the decking as a paddle when he forgot to fill her up at the "Max Albrecht"... Had to be replaced by a part of the wall of a spanish goat farmers hut.. I'll send a request to BdU to replace that, mate!

UPDATE!!!!!!!

For those who have downloaded this skin, and wants another color (a more grey) on the Schnorkel-decking, download this file and place it in your SH3\data\textures\TNormal\tex folder!
If using JSGME, just replace this file with the one in your downloaded folder!
http://files.filefront.com/mask_type7rar/;6512809;;/fileinfo.html

For those who want to download the full texture (Corrected with fix), you can do it here:

(The other links will be updatet ASAP, so that all full downloads from now on will contain this update!)

Very nice Skin indeed. Any chance we might see a similar one for the IVb or IVc ???
Would be very nice to own such a niche weathered boat for all people who are on longer patrols:up:

Uber Gruber
01-11-07, 01:13 PM
Now what would be really cool....and probably a bit too extreme....would be to start a patrol with a new boat paint job which slowly looks "weathered" over time. Say five skins of the same boat, each loaded by SH3 Commander depending on number of days you've been on patrol. The only problem here is that you'd have to save/reload your patrol at two weekly intervals say and that would open a whole can of worms if you have sabotage and malfunctions enabled.......yep, definately a silly idea...sorry.

Hans.

chris911
01-11-07, 02:02 PM
I dont think that this would be possible but maybe one could make a normal Uboat skin a second skin with only dirt and rust on it that would be phased in like the gamma. Imean sth. that is transperent a the beginning and than becomes more and more visable maybe Anvart knows what to do as this seems to ga into the same direction as his lighted ships....
