View Full Version : Sinking an ammo carier with flack gun?
Here is a good one!
I'm on my 2nd GWX patrol off the E. coast of England. Intercepted a muntions carier and put the deck gun into action. Got lots of fires started with about three rounds. Gun kept pumping shells and the bloody thing seemed impervious to further damage.
Tired of this show, I got on the flack gun. Fired a burst. The ammo carrier blew up. Was it possible that the flack started a chain reaction? Or the explosion was caused by the 88mm shells previously fired?

You hit the right spot. I sunk one with about 5-7 cannon rounds right by the stack....BANG...off she went!

Thats not fair tho how come when I attacked one of those it always have air support! Like two or three hurrcane always come when I shot a riund from a deckgun. Also, it runaway while Im being attacked 2 hits 30% hull integrity for my boat.

Well, if you attacked it with the 88 first... your post title is rather misleading.
Also, the Pyro is showing up in convoy far far too often. This will be corrected in the January 31st update.

If you can sink that ship with the flak only, then we'll make it tougher.

I shot it wit only one 105mm round then a bunch of planes come up on me and attacked me that also destroyed my deck gun.

Well, the planes appear to have been in the vicinity already if you were immediately attacked by them... which tells me that they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.
When you attack an enemy in SH3... The enemy is alerted to your presence.
It is only natural that they will send whatever nastiness they can to remove you as a threat.

Which they didnt I manage to limp to cherboug for repairs.
I see the thread got slightly derailed--my question was would it have been possible to blow up the cargo (no deck cargo in evidence) with the 20mm gun. I still believe the explosion was a consequence of the 88 hits. This was a loner and I dived immediately the munitions ship was a sure goner.

Kpt Lehmann,
Please, please, pretty please keep the Pyro ships. Those ammo carriers go up with one of the best firework displays ever:rock:

Yes, I believe your thread was hijacked... sorry.
The Pyro, being an ammunition ship was modelled (damage-wise) to be anything but impervious.
In most circumstances it is a very sensitive ship. I think that you were probably just on the unlucky side to not cause catastrophic damage given that it appears you put quite a few DG rounds into it.
It could also be that your flak gun might have just given it that extra point or two needed to push it over the edge.
@Hakahura,
We are keeping the Pyro... it just won't be seen as often as it is now. It shows up far too frequently... this is against the grain historically speaking.

I dont think they will be stronger, but based on WW2 the pyro ammo ships where rather rare to be spotted and sunk, so that is what going to happen to the GWX update I think.

Yep i must admit iam only in my second patrol but in the convoys i have seen so far they have all had at lest 4 pryos in them which is way to much. In all the history books i have read you could count the number of pryo ships sunk through out the war on your fingers and toes.
Though my crew is not complaining as the make a good light show when they go up.:arrgh!:

He does not say there are going to make it stronger:up:
Just that you wont see it as much.

In the past, I used 1 fish for 1 Pyro... My favourite target... easy to kill (as a gigantic bomb itself) Now, I'm trying to use Desk guns and flaks,
but, do they own guns? if so, I could not bear the risk to surface and attack it... Better to sink it while @ P.D. and ensure that it can never summon DDs by sending a S.O.S. message
If there are screenshots, it would be a fascinating one

Interesting.......I have not used the Deck gun on these yet....but it took three torpedoes to sink the last time.....maybe it was empty?

Regarding the explosion of the Pyro, my understanding is that the ship had sustained enough structural damage (hit points) and just needed another 1-2 88mm rounds on the right spots. Since they were not handy, they could be replaced with some 20mm hits.
The Pyro is definitly a "sensitive" ship as all ammo ships in real life. But it can sustain 2-3 torpedos, if hit on the wrong spot. Donīt forget the HMS Barham, an cruiser with thick hull, which blew in pieces just because a torpedo hit the ammo magazine.
By the way, enjoy your DG while the merchants are unarmed in GWX. Because you donīt want to engage an armed merchant later in the war. You *will* be forced to submerge.

I sunk a small merchant with one 88mm shell. My crew was aiming too. They shot it at the first cargo hold, fore of the cabin area. Was pretty amazed, I never even saw that in vanilla, but I guess it could have been holding explosives, the hulls weren't armored either...pretty realistic if it happens 1 out of 100 ships.

HMS Barham is NOT a cruiser it is a battleship. Unless u already know about it.
