View Full Version : GWX navigation problems in Keil canal - help

I have just installed GWX with no extra mods other than SHIII Commander 2.7. As a new career, I defaulted to flotilla 1 based in Keil but took a VIIB.

My first patrol - I left Keil harbour at about 1.00am 2/9/39. Instead of following my guide and going around Denmark, I decided to use the Keil Canal. My navigator laid out a course keeping to the middle of the canal as shown on navigation screen.

I went ahead 1/3 speed at 8x. The canal was going to take about 2 hours (15 mins real time) so I mostly left the boat to its own devices. I'd just got to the northernmost portion of the canal (about half way) when reports came in 'taking damage' in the middle of the canal (width about 500m). When I went on the conning tower, the sub was smashing itself against a lighthouse on the portside of the canal! By the time I'd backed off, I was down to 42% integrity.

I 'escaped' and docked at the suggested port "Eckernforde" for repairs.

Second patrol was Eckernforde to Keil. As soon as it started, the sub was again smashing itself up. From the conning tower we appeared to be on dry land trying to ram a church. Result 52 dead and end of career.

New career - Flotilla 2, Wilhelmhaven (to avoid canal!) Patrol square was AM32 again 2/9/39 in VIIB.

As I came near to AM32 at night, I decided to pop into Scapa Flow, picking the southernmost eastern channel, again this appeared fairly wide on the navigation chart. Keeping to the middle, the navigator 'pinged' the depth regularly giving depths of about 10metres. Nearly ran into a blockship so stayed on the bridge. Going down the middle of a wide channel (according to navigation chart) I narrowly avoided running ashore. I had to ignore the chart and work the boat from conning tower for the whole time, eventually getting into Scapa Flow where I sunk 2 destroyers and hit a troop carrier but was unable to dodge the other destroyer who sank me.

Both careers seemed to be working off inaccurate charts.

Never had this problem when using Vanilla SHIII, tonnage or GW versions. Best so far about 16 patrols and 350,000 tons.

Any body got any ideas?

Did you use the Kiel Search pattern? It will guide you thru.

Hmmm

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/780/screenhunter061mt6.jpg

There are 2 ports in the canal
Rendsburg about halfway through and Brunsbuettal at the end

As you can see from the pic the auto plot misses the Rendsburg port easily

Eckenforde is a town not a port that whay you started on land
Its a limitation of using naval bases as towns so they change colour when change hands

No. I'd heard of it but didn't know how to use. My problem was - using the navigation map showed clear empty water around me -but from conning tower a dirty great lighthouse and left bank of canal and my sub beating its head against them.

actually I can't see any picture. I'm using firefox - maybe why.

I docked at Eckenforde because that was the only choice given me when I 'escaped' to docking screen.

my navigation map doesn't show any ports in the canal at all.

Must have been Rendsburg I crashed into.

When you are in Kiel - Before moving
Click on your navigator and go to search patterns
Click on Kiel outbound
Back yto you nav and click on resume\return to course
Sub will then follow the course as in above pic

The ports are clearly visible when you zoom in if you plot yourself anway

Ok I'll try that next time. Still can't understand why the map shows clear water around my sub when there is a lighthouse and canal bank in the way.

I know I can't.

Are you sure your zooming in far enough
The ports dont show unless real close in

Absolutely sir.

I'll tell you what. I'm gonna remove all optional GWX mods and start a new career and see if it makes any difference. Be back in a bit.

Edit: Ok, makes no difference with or without mods. It definitely is not being displayed on Nav Map when zoomed in. I can see the ports at the ends of the canal but not Rendsburg.

Now you should at least see a naval base where the port is

fredbass

OK, I've added and saved.

Is it ok to open existing career while on patrol?

fredbass

All I see is the dot with the name beside it.

bigboywooly
12-30-06, 01:16 PM
Ok so you see the Rendsburg name but still no port there ?

:hmm: well as your files are the same as mine I cant understand that

I take it you can see Brunsbuettal at the exit of the canal

Yes I can. Very strange.

Can anyone else ring in on this? Anybody else not see it?

Hey BBW, sorry to jump on the wagon here. Myself & MrChris both have the same issue.

To answer your question above, we both have the Brunsbuettal graphic but not the name.

Slightly OT - Where are the Folke Wulf Condors going @ Wilhemshaven Apr 1940?

bigboywooly
12-30-06, 01:37 PM
:hmm:
Well that is most odd
Guess I am the lucky one then lol
Seriously if your files show the same as mine it should show on the map

@Dan they are on the road to nowhere :rotfl:

I've added your data and can now see Rendsburg name but no port.

I've always been able to see a port near Keil canal inbound point. I assume this must be Brunsbuettal.

I ran the Keil canal using the preset route with no problems but have not since adding Rendsburg.

I seem to have started a right hare with my question.

Still no idea why the navigation chart/map is so inaccurate. both problems happened when the map showed clear water around the uboat.

bigboywooly
12-30-06, 02:38 PM
Well if the port isnt showing on your map thats why you could only see water on the map around your boat

Well the map hasnt changed other that having some labels added

Cage
12-30-06, 03:09 PM
I too do not see Rendsburg on the map.
As for Brunsbuettal, it is on the map, but not labeled (if it's suppose to be).
The 3 labels I have along the canal are: Keil entry point, bridge and bridge.

Next time start a career by 2nd flotilla in Wilhelmshaven : no Kiel canal problem and a nice VIIb to start with instead of a type II tincan...

Well you can get a type 7 in the 7th too
The auto plot makes the canal easy anyway - if ppl use it
And setting land proximity in SH3commander to 128 means you whip through the canal
Some cool sights in Kiel in the early war
Blucher\Tirpitz\Bismark\Scharnhorst and her sister can all be found in the second port opposite the players leaving station in middle 1940 before the Biscay ports are available

Sorry was just trying to make a bad joke... I think I will try Kiel and the tin cans anyway next time I'm dead...;)

:rotfl: dont be sorry
I didnt take it like that
I always start in Kiel so I can whip around the Baltic and catch a few Poilsh at the outset of war
Never use the old dugout either
VIIB for me till I can get a IX series
