View Full Version : Replacing an existing sub with another?

The general concensus has been that we can't add additional user playable subs. So what about replacing one sub with another?

For example two sub's that i personnaly wouldn't mind seeing go away: the IIA and XXI. Two subs i'd love to see, VIIC/41 and IXC/40. My understanding is that the sub models have to have their own ID code. So you'd have make a clone of the existing VIIC and IXC ?

Has anyone tried this? I'd give it a go, but my 3d modeling skills and cloning are simply non existant.

I haven't played around with 3D models since the early days of EAW modding...yeah I used to be masochistic, so I can't help you on that score. But as far as substition as opposed to adding in a completely "new" unit I think that would work.

You'd have to make all of the availability dates, data, flotilla files, equipment, etc. for it aside from just the 3D but from everything I've read I believe that substitution would work. Personally I'd love to see at least 1 Italian boat for the Med, but my modding skills are rusty and my free time for doing things like that is relatively non-existant now.

Ask the Devs what happened to the IXD1 they added to the basic cfg then commented out

;[SUBMARINE_AMMO9];IXD1
;Type=2
;Version=3
;ForeTubes=4
;AftTubes=2
;ForeResIntern=4
;ForeResExtern=6
;ForeResExtra=2
;AftResIntern=2
;AftResExtern=2
;ShellSlots=12

That would have made a good candidate for use as another sub altogether

Yeah i noticed the IXD1 awhile ago. My guess is they thought it redundant.

The key behind this is, that selecting an IXC/40 or VIIC/41, the hard files behind those subs, your simply getting another IXC and VIIC, with no difference in their nonclamature. Having them in the basic.cfg is utterly pointless. Now there are two other solutions. Run a JSGME plugin or use SH commander. But i find myself leaning on a more hard solution.

Theoritically all one has to do (im guessing) is clone an IXB or C, rename the files to the type II's files, edit the name ingame to the new name, and basic.cfg loadouts and it *should* work. Of course i know it wont be THAT easy, or someone would have done it by now.

Yes mate, in theory it is possible, not 100% sure tho. I know the interior can be changed to resemble any other nations sub interior. But as for the exterior not sure.As the interior is detatched from the sub it's self..one way to quickly check this is to change your dive settings and take her down to the magic 505m everything gets un-rendered so the sub it's self disapears Except the interior, you cannot view the interior from the outside, however you can still interact with the sub, walk around, gives orders etc,etc...but nothing happens to the sub it's self due to it being un-rendered.

Interesting Pants, here I was thinking that the interiors would be the hard part and not the exterior model. I don't see why the exterior couldn't be changed in theory though, look at all of the different things people have done with ships.

I'm still kind of new to modding and had been hacking around with this sort of thing
but when I redid the sub I simply remodelled a IXB1 I did most of my work in basic cfg
and zone file and if you manually rewrite the components of the type two to a type IX
and tag them you can just switch out the hull and put whatever conning tower you like
as far as I know its possible and doesnt require model and cloning
on the other hand its not a packaged mod although I think its possible to
do that too.

speaking of which

please read my help with the river class frigate thread if you are an experienced moddeller I need to no how to delete a radar and reverse the positions of a deckhouse and bandstand MM.

Don't CB's playable subs here http://www.ebort2.co.uk/ replace the exterior models for certain subs?

I DLed the jap sub but have not gotten the chance to try it yet.

It apparently changes the type IX/D2 though, I assume for the bigger sub characteristics.

Interiors are not a problem. You can have an IXB using a type 7's interior, or a IXD2 using the type XXI's interior. Its just a single line item edit in the subs cfg file. The only interior thats not interchangeable is the type II's because its zoned differently.

Now, one U-boat I would like to see and play is one that never saw any action, It was ordered, but never delivered. The cancelled project of Typ XI U-cruiser, running at 26 knots flank and two twin 155mm (IIRC) turrets. Itīs diving time shouldīve been 1-2 minutes, but it would be fun to command one, esp in the early stages of the war.

Mr Van Helsching I believe you have been helping big with the damage model for the river ff , first thanks and If you dont need to insist on a totally historically accurate model what I did to get mine was scab a type VIIC/4 conning tower onto a type 9 hull and added a 105mm on the lower aft platform this is still designated so1 in my case but I understand youd be able to fix that.
it works great. the problems are that there two of the six aa crew possitions appear but are unmanable there are no extra positions for more deckgun crew. when you man the deck guns while commanding the crew goes to the aft gun and the forward gun is slaved when you direct fire on a target (no coding was done for this it just happened) when you man the deckguns yourself the forward deckgun is as normal but the aft gun view is blocked by the top Rail. also the aft gun has no usable sights for humans this however does not affect gun crew performance they appear to shoot as though they were manning a fully equiped rear deck gun . in the event It is just a total blast in surface combat. the best position to drive from is the forward aa platform and let the deckgun crew fight the cannons your choice of medium aa's pm me if you need more info I offered big a 70knot version of this boat. and its mostly simple coding in Basic config, as at the time I did it I didnt know of mod workshop or modding tools MM.
