Okay, I'm not usually one to sing something's praises till the cows come home, but I can proudly say that GWX has made me genuinely scared on Silent Hunter 3 for the first time.

Here's the story:

Grid BF12, departing from Wilhelmshaven (we've all been there, right?). So I think "Hmm, I'll try the Straights of Dover to get there quick, see if I can intercept the task force heading down from Scotland."

Big mistake. I was cruising quite happily at standard speed, cutting through the waves and dancing to some classic tunes from the 30's. Then, the lights change to white and I decide to dive to save me from any hassle with aircraft or surface ships. Good job I did - as soon as the bow sank below the waves, I got about 4 different warship contacts. "Crap" thought I, as I slowed the engines and dove to 25 meters.

About twenty minutes later, ping. "Sh*te". Ping. Silent Running. Ping. Change course. Ping. "Wasserbomb!" Chaos. Flooding in three compartments. "Assemble the damage control team! Secure from Silent Running!" I yelled at the screen, and the flooding was stopped, but not before the boat was bottomed. More chaos, all four bow torpedo tubes destroyed, as well as the hydrophone recievers. There I was, at the bottom of the English channel, deaf as a post, unarmed and cacking myself.

They never let up. Pattern after pattern found their mark but U-35 held together. Just. The engines were stopped, I was sitting on the bottom, waiting for doomsday. But nothing. The pinging stopped, so I tried to ease U-35 off the bottom and take a look with the scope. They were moving away, probably dancing with joy at their 'victory'. Nope. Not a chance. I blew the ballast, cranked the engines into flank and ploughed away as fast as I could, the boat barely able to stay above the waves, a narrow escape.

I love GWX, I love all who were responsible for it, and I love all of you guys.

First time I ever read someone loving getting killed:o. Yeah, the mod is just awesome. Some say the DD are just too good. I say not! Elude by going to deep/silent/run at 2 kts/change course often! The mod makes you have to react like a real captain. You really have to think of your plan of attack and escape because the days of blasting around and thumbing your nose at the DD are over:oops:....not to mention the aircraft bearing down on your butt!

I love GWX so much as you Kapitan P. The realism is more believable now rather than GW, particularly when for instance in my third patrol and I was finishing off a Merchant with the deck gun. Then screaming down from the sky came two Hurricane fighter bombers. The bloody bastards killed four of my men. Previously with GW the RAF rarely appeared unless later on in the war. But this was my third patrol and although happy about this was not happy that my men were killed. But it's realistic enough for me.

BTW I don't appear to have the damage percentage showing anymore when the sub gets damaged. Has this been removed? Or is it a bug?

Hull integrity has been removed with GWX because one really does not know how the hull is after an attack....but.....I'm sure the repairmen would certainly tell the captain that the damage is ok, good, fair, forget about it lets go home. So I think the hull integrity meter should be put back or a program that states the hull is ok, good, bad, lets get the hell out of here. Personally I do not mind the missing hull meter, seems some what more realistic. So I live with it. Gives you sort of a bad feeling if the old boat will make it home or not:o

You don't use SHIII Commander ?
Because it haves the option to show or hide Hull integrity.

A hell of a story guys...:arrgh!:

One helluva story...and just for the record 'I use the hull integrity' icon

I don't have the hull integrity turned on. The DD never touch me;). I don't give them the opportunity:rotfl:

There is another thread here that someone suggested using just words like good, fair, poor and it really does not give you a number. So you know the hull is screwed but you not really sure how much more it can take before you go to the bottom. I'm sure repair crews told the captain that it looks bad and don' t do this but these were educated guesses as to what the hull could withstand. It will be interesting to see if the GWX team can do something with that.

I am usually a lurker here on the forums reading as much as I can. I had to post that I am really enjoying GWX and wanted to thank all the modders for a job well done and all their hard work.
I had a blast on my last patrol in March 1940. BDU reported a convoy moving at 8 kts east. I manuvered ahead of the convoy and then began my approach at 90 AOB. There were at least 4 escorts so I snuck thru 2 dds at the head of the convoy on the surface. I was with in at least 800 meters of a destroyer's bow as I passed him to get inside the screen. It was very dark but I got inside with out having to dive. I closed to about 2000 meters of a line of merchants and I dove to periscope depth and went to silent running to be on the safe side. I set up my TDC for a 90 degree fan shot and I fired 2 fish at a Pyro ship and 2 at another large merchant and then dove at full speed to 90 meters. I got 2 hits on the Pyro, 1 on the large merchant and 1 miss. The 1st depth charge run almost got me as I had not reduced to 2 kts and I think they heard me because I was trying to get deep fast. Thank god I hit flank just in time to get out of the way of a couple charges and took minor damage. I went back to silent running and slowly made my way out of the convoy at 100 meters. I was depth charged 2 more times but they were inaccurate and I escaped. I stayed deep and silent and I didn't take a peak at periscope depth. The pyro ship sank but the other merchant got away but I was happy to get away with a kill :) . I thought it was a good early war battle. I definitly just wanted to get away with my 1 sinking because the escorts were not going to let me go as easily as they used too.

Happy Holidays to all!

Cool deal Trim. Now how about reloading some more torpedos and have a go at the convoy again? I hound the hell out of them for day if I can! But yes, anyone can get into the convoy and elude if you do it right!

Thanks AVG,

Yep I am reloading torpedos on the surface and racing ahead of the convoy again it is only 3:12 AM I think I will be in position again to attack before dawn. Only bad thing is a big bright moon is coming up so I think I will come straight at the convoy on the surface so my profile is small till I see the 1st DD at the head of the convoy then I will dive to periscope depth and manuever past him on silent running and hopefully turn 90 degrees for my typical 90 AOB fan shot inside the screen.

Good fun

I've been lurking here ever since SHIII came out though I used to post at the SHIII Forums at UBI a while back.

Man, I love GWX. Are you kidding me? This is what I've been waiting for. Finally, that "realism" factor I've been hungering for.

But I must admit I would think my chief would have some half-baked idea as to what the hull integrity would be like. Oh, he wouldn't be able to pin it down to within a single percentage point like in stock SHIII, but wouldn't he have some idea? And if not, shouldn't I get myself a new chief?

Well, you have a choice, you can use SH3Commander and keep the hull integeity feature on if you want :yep:

Welcome aboard :arrgh!:

Yup the DD's and planes are real killers now. Going deep and running silent are your only chance. I have never been damaged so much before. GWX is the best MOD I've seen for any SIM.

Couldn't agree with you more....it's probably already the most popular mod in sub sim terms
