Hi, AVG, try to do a google search on ".WVA/WMA to .OGG". There are a lot of free programs out there, and some that gives you a trial period!

Cool. I'll do that. I have a few WVA files I want to put in the game.

Hi, try 'Acoustica Audio Convertor Pro'

AVGWarhawk There are a bunch of free programs to use; audacity and winamp will both output ogg files. One of the problems with WVA files is that some of them are protected from converting with any (legal) program.

Well, there is only one way to find out!!! I give it a go on any one of them and see what happens.

You can try Acoustica Audio Convertor Pro and it will convert WMA files etc. seamlessly and no legal issues. If you don't take the full product, your converted files don't disintegrate and/or your Computer doesn't blow up !

I converted all my gramaphone files to .wav. These work perfectly and I can play them through my computer's regular sound player. .ogg also works, but whatever you do, do NOT use MP3s in the gramaphone. They'll drive you crazy with never finishing a song.

Doesn't converting those (whatever not was lossless file) wave files make the files unecessary large, which result in very inefficient on memory usage?

I think ogg is best to go at the moment. For sound quority, most those "old tunes" floating around on the internet is already very low quality (like 32kbps/22050khz or 64kbps/44100khz) so when convert, take this into account - converting to higher bit or sampling rate will not make the sound any better - it's just waste of memory. Yeah, mp3 files can't seem to play to the end of file.

Also, gramophone plays thru what I think too much feature, a noise file which is intended to mimic vinil recored's noise... The thing is, those "old tunes" are already in very low quality and personally making them worse is just overdo... so I created clear file (no noise mask)... All Edith Piaff remastered records already sound low enough straight from CDs...

Starting and stopping, selecting songs on the gramophone is kinda tedious with default interface but they can be mapped to desired keys and I found doing it makes gramophone experience very comfortable ;) Especially "toggle gramophone start/stop" with a single key stroke is handy.

Well, whatever the case, the file I want to convert is protected. No way around that I suppose!

Download dBpowerAmp for converting to OGG. It's a neat, easy to use program.

I never thought of that. Then I'm working with a 160 GB hard drive and so far I've used about 40 of them. Then again, you're probably right.

I'm using a huge amount of old German hits I downloaded from Terrapin's site. A lot of them sound so good I've been trying to make them tinnier sounding.

I use SH3 Commander, which has a "Randomize Gramaphone" function. Since I have well over 100 songs on mine, plus historic radio broadcasts, I just let it do its own thing.

I have no problem with old recordings playing on an even worse quality on SH3's grammophone. I mean, look at the conditions for storing those vinyls on board...
And I don't think the guy who put one on, first washed his hands. :D
Well, whatever the case, the file I want to convert is protected. No way around that I suppose! You can playback it to your home stereo-set (and record analog or digitally), and playback again to your computer, which then can record it from the analog line-in, or your digital SPDIF-input.
Record as .wav - there's obviously no copy-protection anymore - and convert to OGG.
I use the full version of JetAudio.

P.s. I hope I didn't brake any forum-rules.

It's not about hard drive; about RAM usage. Everything you're using must be loaded on to RAM where it is limited size of it. Those music files are very much likely loaded "on demand" to the memory, so basically smaller file size is easier for the entire game. But it may not make really noticeable difference...

If you mean to say smaller volume.. the volume setting feature of SH3 :D well, to balance the volume of songs, you can normalise the files with those tools like dbpoweramp. Now that you have files in wave format, normalising shouldn't cause any loss of quality (in theory).

It's only preference and well, not important at all but IMHO that "noise" file is just beyond reality LOL. Even in the Das Boot they had a better phono :p

Ah yeah, that's one thing I think original game should implement.

Well, the best thing to do actually is using an external independent stereo :rotfl:

I used the program recommended but the piece shows as being protected and will not convert.

Also, I have one of the original songs that came with GWX making my game CTD when it starts  Thats what I get when I start screwing with files:nope:

No, I mean that the sound in Das Boot is too good. By "tinnier" I mean I want it to sound like it's coming out of a very small speaker made in 1938. It should sound like it's coming out a little tin box, that is, crappy.

I see it :D Well then you wanna actively modify the files - like cut high 'n low with eq, touch of high pass filter, some compressor to narrow dynamic range, and a scent of distortion and all... In anyway, the "noise mask" doesn't really do good job since it's just another sound source playing together with the song. But that's not worth it perhaps. ja, come to think of Das Boot, the speaker mustn't've been one meant for music. best we can do is find actually crappy monophonic speaker system
