I remember with TGW 1.1a it was recommended to complete naval acadamey before you installed 1.1a....

Is the same true with GWX? I forgot how much starting prestige the naval academy gave you...but I do know it allowed you to upgrade to a VIIB after a few missions in a IIA. I want to start with a fresh career (being as I deleted my save files with the re-install...thought I heard you had to start a new career with the GWX anyway.)

Yes you really need to do the academy before installing GWX as it will be harder to pass - not impossible but a lot harder
And yes old careers wouldnt work so a new one is recommended - the academy is fine but no sea patrols

If you don't want to do the accademy you can always install GWX and then edit the accademy cfg file in the My Documents\SH3\data\cfg folder. Just set all the numbers to 1000 and the values to true and you'll have 1500 renown in the begining of your career.

Naval Academy in GWX isn't so hard as in GW 1.1 - I passed it with no problems, check it yourself. I don't think it's necessary to do it before GWX install.

I didn't do that

I just started my partrol with my new IXD2 boat in Indonesia (Japanese base, flo. 30/33) and got appox. 2200 renown by sinking 13 ships (used 56% realism + no dud, which I hate, following minefield + subnet)

I hate following the patrol grid --- not LEGAL BINDING and actually the patrol grid given is not a grid square but a big area. I won't be sent to Stalingrad by oppositing that order

However, that stuff is extremely useful to newbies and provide you 1000 renown without any patrol and ship sinking... Still worth doing so if you want 1000 renown before you start so that you can enlist some good man for yourself
