READ THIS FIRST:
I'd like to take this opportunity to offer the salute of the
entire GWX Dev Team to the tireless efforts of our team
member Pablo.
Pablo has gone to extraordinary lengths to vastly improve the
quality of our documentation, crediting... and corroboration of the
changes made in the GWX mod with history.
Pablo's search for information, as you will soon see... has
lead him to some very interesting people and their own
involvement in research... or involvement in the making of
history itself.
Pablo created this document without pay.
This document will remain a work-in-progress until we
discontinue future works relative to the GWX Mod or until
Pablo decides to call it a day.
Pablo, I wish I could shake your hand matey. God Bless you
sir!
~S!~

I've already noticed one (very small) mistake: on page 4 there is a chart showing British surface ship gun turret designations. The three forward turrets are A, B and C, and the after turrets are X and Y. On ships with amidships turrets there can also be P and Q, but more important is the fact that on HMS Nelson and Rodney (which have all three turrrets forward) the third turret was X, not C.
Not really important, but I thought I'd mention it.
Just a fun note: on early (pre-WWI) German dreadnoughts there were six turrets, the last two being Emil and Friedrich, but since there were two wing turrets on each side the letters went around in a circle to the right.

SH3.5 !!!???!!! Now that is a compliment! We thank you sir!
@ Kpt. Lehmann & the crew: Im really impressed about the way you have depicted the german & british campaign in Norway (Weserübung), with info about Harstad & Narvik. You even got the names correct! This shows that you have really worked hard on this, and i dont think this is a clean "copy & paste from internet" or "direct from a book" type of work. The way you describe the actions in the Ofotfjord, Vestfjord & Vaagsfjord, is really incredible.
Its one thing to mod a whole lot of files, so it can look better. Another thing is to get into the material on a historical basis, and getting it all correct. In my opinion you guys have done both, with excellent result.
I thank you again, and i hope GWX wont be the last we see of you guys.
This deserves my personal signature.
Kind regards
Dan

Super manual men. After reading it I believe I can launch the space shuttle or at the very least captain the Queen Mary!!!!
No seriously, SH3.5 is a very appropriate comment in this case. Just compare the new feature list to what we know about new features of SHIV so far - the comparison is not all too unfavourable ;)
Also big props on including some of the history and lots of pictures into this. As silly as it might sound, I like this kind of manual because not only does it explain the game itself, but it makes for some great washroom reading (good thing there's two said facilities in my house) :rotfl:

Q) What is SH3 addiction?
A) Once an individual has tried SH3, they may be unable to predict or control the extent to which they will continue to use. SH3 is probably the most addictive game that has been devised so far. SH3 addicts must have more and more mods to sustain their high and avoid the intense "crash" or depression that follows their binges. They become physically and psychologically dependent on mods. All to often, the process of mod addiction goes something like this: The "soon to be addict" downloads their first mod. Upon installation of this mod, the users brain instantly begins the addiction process. The individual's mental and emotional being is soon to follow, but for now just their brain suffers from the initial stages of mod addiction. After the first few times using the mod, their mind slowly starts the addiction process. This grows stronger and stronger until, mentally, the mod addict believes that they cannot live without mods. They now are entangled in a full fledged mod addiction. Shortly after this occurs, mods takes complete control over their lives.
Once the individual's lives have been overridden by mods, they no longer feel normal without downloading mods . When this occurs they feel the need to use more mods just to feel normal. In order to get high they have to download super mods. Their mod addiction has infiltrated all areas of their life. They can no longer function physically, emotionally, or mentally without mods. This cycle of addiction continues until the individual either quits and returns in a few months or just starts making mods.

Wow, what a classy manual, better than most any game you will see on the Market.
I bet the SH4 crew is quaking in their boots - "Get to work on the historical parts of our manual boys" and "Did we include Operation Crimson?".
You have set a new standard for excellent performance, well done GWX Team!!!!
I do have one question, after reading the whole thing, and then putting my burning socks back on . . .
I like to manage my crew - it says that fatigue is locked at 32x and below (from basic.cfg, if I remember) but it also says, for max enjoyment, do not use Grey Wolves 24h fatigue. If I liked the old fatigue model, does the team have any recommendations? I like to change my watches as I cross the atlantic at 128 - I know it says "season to taste" but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to break what is obviously a finely honed machine.
Of course, I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth, I will just have to cross the Atlantic at 32x, it will just be a bit harder with the wife and all . . .
Anyway, all that aside, what a marvelous manual!!!!

Hi!
We will update the manual accordingly.
Thanks!
Pablo
The fact the crew fatigue only works below x32 TC has nothing to do with the actual model you're using, but with your time compression values. You can change these with SH3 commander or edit the cfg. Crew fatigue doesn't occur past the 3d rendering TC rate, which happens to be 32 by default. You can kick 3d rendering up all the way to 1024, and the crew fatique will work at the maximum default time compression level.
This may be due to me being color-blind but I see no values in this table other than a N/A under Submerged/Conning Tower on Page 23
Table 2: Relative fatigue accumulation factors within U-boat compartments
Does anyone have these values so I can write them in?
TIA
Hi!
Those values were still under review when the manual was prepared; a future release of the manual will include them.

I saw the GWX dev team member who have translated the game to french is not credited, and there is no mention about a french translation ! Strange, cause KPT Lehmann told me there will be a french in-game translation ! :88):hmm:

Hi!
I think we put that credit on page 159 (page 163 out of 182). Please take a look and see if
1) we have the credit in
2) we credited the right person.
If in either case the answer is "no" please send me a PM with the correct information.
Thanks!

Kpt, I have just uploaded the manual to my own fileshare page now, in case anyone needs another place to download it. I probably should have done it sooner, but there doesn't appear to be anyone having any problems yet. The link is in my signature if you want to update the first post with it.

I noted that you have change the Sensors.dat file, will you be providing a file ( Sensors_data.txt ) to support TT mini-tweaker ????
Also
I noted on page 88, that Hungary is getting a FW200. I think that the Germans were the only military operators of this type of aircraft

I am truly astonished. This far, far exceeded my expectations. I loved all the historical information, too. As was said, it takes me back to the days when games had manuals. Huge thumbs-up!
This is an example for all to follow, including the Silent Hunter 4 dev' team and, gulp, me:oops: (no, no 182-pages long manual for NorOps. My heart hurts just thinking about all the work:o).
Splendid work, GWX team.
Only slightly negative thing is that it apparently doesn't have info' on all the new vessels. But oh well, splendid work nonetheless!

Thanks, Boris, I remember fiddeling with that before, it just has been such a long time since I have messed with it.
It is true, the sheer beautifully integrated marvel of it makes one bashful to even ask such trivial questions on fatigue, or release.
This Mod is one that will be remembered by the video gaming community for a very very long time.
Thank you GWX team I love you!

Hi!
We prefer to think of these as "undocumented features." - - nah, just kidding. :arrgh!:
There are quite a few new ships and we may have missed mentioning a few in the manual as we were getting it out the door; if so, we will put them in as soon as possible.
Which ships do you think we are missing?

The S&T-class Destroyer, as listed in the Orders of Battle, page 89, is apparently not found elsewhere in the manual.
Also, I found this sentence a bit odd:
The most famous Ar-196 exploit was the capture of the submarine HMS Seal on May 5, 1940 when a mine damaged the submarine, immobilizing it and forcing it to the near Sweden.Should it be "the nearby" Sweden or something, or is there a missing word ("forcing it to the [...] near Sweden")?
And:
The sampan (*), literally Cantonese for “three planks,” is a small boat from 12 to 15 feet long used
for commerce and transportation in Asian coastal waters and inland waterways.257In the parentheses (red asterisk) there are only two squares instead of Asian characters. But maybe that's just me missing a character set?

There are also no descriptions for the Great Lakes Merchant or LightShip yet either (these omissions are already known to us). If you want to see a picture of each of them, you can check under my username in the ship library thread here on SubSim.:yep: Of course, many people here have already seen the Lightship, as I have released it to the general community previously.

While we're all very giddy, instead of bugging Kpt. Lehmann about release dates, I'd like to recommend everyone do what I'm doing to take the edge off...
First, make sure your SH3 install is clean. Roll back SH3 Commander if you use it, uninstall your previous version of SH3, and then once that's done delete all the SH3 folders out of the C:/Program Files/Ubisoft and C:/My Documents directories. Run a good registry cleaner. Next step, install stock SH3 and apply the 1.4b patch. Once you've done that and are primed for GWX fun, pour yourself a whiskey (2 fingers full in a rocks glass with 3 ice cubes, just the way Sinatra liked it) and put on Das Boot.
Rinse, repeat until GWX is out.

Additionally, perform a disk cleanup and defrag your hard-drives.

1. backup the clean install so that you never need to install and patch again (well, apart from HDD failure anyway)

Went to my local second hand bookshop on the weekend, and they noticed my interest in sub books (bought a couple in the past) and they jumped out from behind the counter and GAVE me a copy of "The Coffin Boats - History of Japanese midget sub operations in WWII". They wouldn't accept a penny for it, and insisted that I have it since I remind them of their son (poor souls) who lives interstate.
The sad thing is, that it's sitting on my bedside table gathering dust, while I read the GWX manual.

Hi all,
I think I found a small error in the GWX manual- the "jake" floatplane (page 118) and all other planes based on the same model ("Arado" and "Kingfisher") have their floats inversly mounted. Can this be fixed?
The second one is on the page 89-the destroyers available for the polish navy- there was one, similar to the french "Bourrasque"-class, named ORP Burza that managed to escape to GB in 1939 and served in the atlantic convoy duty and in the med for the whole war.
There was (is?) a great ready model from Jack410 from Poland, so no need to make a whole new ship, only to include it in GWX. It it possible?
Nevertheless, those are only minor errors on this fabulous work. I want to thank all the modders that spent so many time to make this game so realistic.

Hi, can I offer a solution to this as I have 3 variations on my HD; I created a stock SHIII with 1.4 on my External Hard Drive [120GB] then downloaded GWX Beta into My Documents, started up the exe. and when it asked for the path, I pointed the GWX Beta file into that version [for example .. 'D' Drive/SHIII].
To start it, I go into the SHIII folder and fire it up by clicking the red SHIII icon = works like a charm.
A 40/80 GB Hard Drive is very cheap now in this rip-off Country so will be nickels and dimes elsewhere.
Having an external hard drive saved me a lot of hassle and stress.
PS One other point of note if you decide to do this is not to have a SHIII folder in My Documents when you fire it up as one is created [I created 'Garages' in My Documents folder for the different versions].

Senate Approves Donation of USS Iowa to California
-- Measure would allow Stockton ...to bid for the Iowa --
Washington, DC – The U.S. Senate has approved legislation by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) to transfer one of our nation’s greatest battleships, the USS Iowa, to California for permanent donation status. If signed into law, this measure would allow Stockton...to bid for the battleship.
I though this was joke, but it looks like it's true. Stockton, CA, may become Iowa's seacoast--75 miles up-river from the sea.
Interesting, but what does that have to do with GWX?:hmm: (Besides the fact that the Iowa class is in GWX.)

In the Manual it says Iowa is going to Stockton. I sure hope they are right.
Last I heard it was between San Fran, Stockton, and one other westcoast city
OK then. I thought it might have to do with the manual information.

Hi!
San Francisco had first dibs on it, but rejected it. Their loss, IMHO.

Yeah that pissed off the Navy something fierce too. By the sounds of it, they are "boycotting" San Fran for awhile. It's like you trying to give someone a gift and they saying that's such a stupid gift, it's not worthy of me. How would you feel?
EDIT: I CAN'T wait for GWX any longer! I have been hanging on this board for the last 1 and a half. Going off to play some M2:TW for a bit! When I come back hopefully the links will b up and flowing!! [crosses fingers while looking longingly at the map of the north atlantic pinned up behind his monitor.]

You removed the Clemeson from the british fleet? But they had thoes.
But now we have a separate Town class for the lend-lease DDs.:know: So the stock Clemson class is now for the US only, but the UK, Norway and Canada will still get the new Town class clone.:yep:

You removed the Clemeson from the british fleet? But they had thoes.
The Anglo-American Destroyers for Bases Agreement of September 1940 transferred 50 destroyers from the U.S. Navy to the Royal Navy in exchange for basing rights in British possessions in the Western Hemisphere. These destroyers were of the Wickes, Caldwell, and Clemson classes, with the Caldwell- and Wickes-class destroyers built in 1917-1918 and the Clemson class built from 1919 to 1922; these were all considered “Town-class” destroyers regardless of their original class type.
Not "removed" just "renamed.:D
Well, technically they were removed. But then they were replaced with a clone with a more appropriate name and skins. So yes, they were renamed in a roundabout way.:p But you will still see lend-lease 4-stackers, and that is what everyone wants I presume.
Hi all,
I think I found a small error in the GWX manual- the "jake" floatplane (page 118) and all other planes based on the same model ("Arado" and "Kingfisher") have their floats inversly mounted. Can this be fixed? I will bring it up with the mod team.
Again, back to the design team. I would hazard a guess that it won't be in the initial release, but could be in a follow-up release

Dane, what's your point? As Admin of this forum, let me explain the tone we try to achieve here: courtesy, civility, and maturity. Obviously your quips are meant to bait the dev team. I won't begin to try and guess what your motivation is. You may be new here and unused to our goals of running a forum with friendly people. But let me ask you, please, if the enthusiasm and interest in Grey Wolves upsets you, don't read the posts.
Now, let's get this thread back on topic... huzzaahhh!

Well one way is to open the manual
Tools/Basic then Select
Now you can copy the text and paste to a Word.doc if you like
Probably an easier way but the only one I can think of

Just wanted to say thank you very much for this most impressive work. Being a manual freak I must say, this is the best manual I've ever seen!
If you should ever get some time off and not knowing what to do, then the photo on page 83 doesn't fill it's frame left and right  and the first book in the bibliography page 172 is mentioned twice...
Happy christmas and thanks for Gift of the Year http://www.sfgpl.dk\pics\smilies\banana.gif

mau---- Hi!
I'm sorry, but the only way I know to remove the background is to edit the original document; however, I have an idea:
Each entry in the table of contents is a hyperlink to the appropriate section, and most of the footnotes have hyperlinks to the source materials, so you may want to have loaded the Manual into Adobe Acrobat before you start playing SH3/GWX.
You should be able to pause the game and switch to the Adobe Acrobat session (using ALT-TAB) if you need to refer to the manual at any point in the game, and then switch back again once you are done reading for the moment.I know it is not the same as reading the manual on paper but it might get the job done for you.

I printed out the entire manual and in full color http://www.bombs-away.net/forums/images/smilies/bigeyes2.gif (http://www.bombs-away.net/forums/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=0&forumid=24#). It was vry nice but I had to rotate about 3 pages (I think), then cut them to size and started gluing then together to make a book.
