Hello :D
I was wondering about the radar warning in SHIII. Shouldn't it show from what bearing the radar transmission is picked up? It's pretty useless without in my opinion. Besides, when the bearing of the enemy radar is shown, it's possible to track down a convoy using passive sensors only.

No it doesn't...you just get a message, radar emissions detected, or at least I DO...okay, I know that there is foe radar in the vicinity, but without knowing their bearing I might as well head right into them instead of away from them, besides, it's annoying to be without the potential of tracking them. In my opinion there is very little one can do once the Allies get radar, when their emissions are detected all you can do is to dive, this hampers your speed making it impossible to get within a range to lure off their course and speed unless they are heading towards you which you do not know. If it was possible to get a bearing to the emitting source, like it was irl, their own radar could be turned against them, just like when tracking radio emissions, this was possible all from the beginning

Thanks :)

It doesnt tell you the bearing but you can see the line leading out from your sub on the navmap

@Bigboywooley:
hate to be a party pooper, but.....no :lol: no bearing lines on my map, has this got anything to do with the realism settings?

May be
May be because you have NYGM
To be honest its a long time since I actually palyed lol and IIRC my realism is on 50% while testing
As far as I know, in real life if a U-Boat skipper got a radar warning he would immediately dive, in case it was an approaching aircraft. Given the range of WWII radar, I suspect that most often if the radar emission was from a ship the U-Boat would probably be close enough to hear her with hydrophones if the ship was close enough to pick up the U-Boat on radar...
Does anybody have any actual stats on this stuff? Plus, does anybody know if real-life U-Boat radar detectors gave a bearing?

See http://www.uboataces.com/radar-warning.shtml for a pretty good historical overview of Uboat radar warning tech.
In brief, unless you have the FuMB-35 Athos (which was deployed on a few XXI's at the very end of the war) or the FuMB-28 Naxos ZM (which was still in development at the surrender and didn't see service) -- both of which had a CRT display which could show bearing to the transmitting radar -- all you should get is the crewman's notice about "radar detected". In other words, virtually all RWR sets used by the ubootwaffe were like the radar detector in a car....you get an indicator light or an audible tone and that's it.
Playing with NYGM 2.2, I actually *DO* get bearing lines from the radar warning, even with METOX. I wish I knew how to turn off the bearing lines, because it isn't realistic for VII or IX ops, and it makes it trivially easy even at 100% to end-around radar equipped escorts and dive for a submerged attack on a convoy.

:hmm: I see......I would still like to be able to tell the bearing, wonder why that map does not work....
im sorry if i understand the question worng but form me it shows the line like the sound contact ones and if you zoom it in you can see the bearing of it on the bearing tool thingie that comes with GW

@JMack:
No, you don't understand the question wrong :D I just think that we have 2 different settings perhaps or maybe it's the fact that we use 2 different mods, I use NYGM 2.2.....:hmm:

The first radar detection device was Metox. It was a flimsy wooden cross wraped with wire and had to manually rotated while mounted on the conning tower. Therefore, I'd assume the commander or watch officer had a general idea of the direction of the contact while not the exact bearing.
Even the later radar detection units had to be rotated to cover the entire 360 degrees. But there method of rotation was most likely improved.
