First off I'd like to thank the dev team of TGW for a great mod and all the guys who helped me to get it to run right with SH3 Commander.

I finally got through my 1st patrol with it last night with a whopping 5 ships @ 32,188t sunk.

My question is: Why is it so easy to get awards? For that one patrol I got:

Iron Cross 2nd class
Iron Cross 1st class
Iron Cross w/ Oak Leaves

But I was only allowed to award one Iron Cross to my crew.

Is this right? I think more should be availible to the crew for their hard work and efforts. What happens when the game runs out of awards for me?

Check this out to see how the promotions and medals are awarded http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Medals

These apply for the stock game but I don't think they are much different in GW. The awars you give to your crew are based on the renown you gain per patrol. If you want to give them more medals you can always use SH3 Commander.

Ok, after reading that:

I got 20,000+ renown for the tonnage sunk and the following awards for the crew in addition to mine stated above.

1x Iron Cross 1st class
50x U-boat war clasps (one for each crew member)

I know historicaly it took 100,000 tons sunk for the captian to get an IC, but does the game take into account that the crew fixed my damaged boat? We were sinking at one point due to flooding in 60% of the boat from DCs. My crew worked mirecals to keep us alive.

Sorry about that. I'm at work, really held up and I didn't realised that you were using SH3Cmd

With SH3Cmd you can assign medals, ranks and qualifications to your crew. These awards are irrelevant to the ones SH3/GW is giving you. Usually I tend to give my crew medals after a succesful patrol (large tonnage) or after I have been awarded a medal myself (i.e. if I get the Knights Cross I do give the Iron Cross to everyone on board)

The only thing you cannot do with SH3Cmd is to award rank and medals to yourself. For this you do depend on the Sh3/GW award system.

If the game run out of awards for you your crew will continue getting medals and awards from the SH3/GW system depending on the renown gained in the patrol.

As a personal opinion and because I don't really like the award system of SH3/GW I tend to hand over medals using SH3Cmd. Have I answered your question??? If not please let me know as I might missunderstood it

I don't think the award system takes into account the crew efforts. Awards are given based on renown and not tonnage. I also think (but I am not sure about that) that if your boat gets damaged you lose renown and thus lose potential awards.

Don't worry too much about it. The one who gets hammered in the awards system is usually you and not your crew. The problem with the SH3/GW awards system is that is based on renown, and renown is based on the realism level as well. Your crew can get their medals and promotions from you but you cannot get them from SH3

To give you an example I had played 65 patrols (1939-1945) in SH3/GW and sunk a bit more than 1,700,000 GWT, but because I was not playing 100% realism I was always awarded less renown. Also because the promotions are handed over depending on your current renown I was a Sr. Commander in the end of the war!!! I had got all the medals and everything but I suffered in the ranking system of the game.

Well at least GW has a better realism setting. NYGM will show it at 100% even if you have fuel limits turned off. I thought that was wacky.

Would be nice to have a more realistic promotion system. That way people could learn and appreciate what it took to get them. Donitz didn't beat up his captians because they came back with busted up boats. He beat them up when they came back and didn't sink anything.

I believe (but don't quote me on this) that NYGM does that because it doesn't record renown, but records absolute tonnage, and a realism of less that 100% will not properly keep a running total of your total tonnage. That's also why they warn you to only enlist zero-renown cost personell, because enlisting crew or officers that have an associated renown cost will subtract that from your cumulative tonnage total.
