Just personal opinion : I sit a lot behind the hydrophone wheel and I suppose the thing is turning. As I don't use external views in mission anymore (except for taking a couple of pics for an AAR once every six months...;)) it wouldn't bring me anything.

OMG:o :o :o You da man.

But, would it not always rotate as the station is nearly always manned?

I like the idea, especially if it rotates when the AI is "manning" the hydrophone.

Anvart, this is an EXCELLENT idea! I agree with those other guys: Let it also move when those AI crewmembers use it!

Yep, great idea. The magic is always in details. Thanks.

I love the idea essepecially if you could make those radar masts on the u-boat turn as well.

I like it.

Well thats what Anvart is asking about . QUOTE "Also it's interesting for me, that you will tell about rotation of the radar antenna." Can anyone help Anvart on this .

That would be awesome. The hydrophone rotates underwater, and the antenna when surfaced.

I,m not sure about the hydrophone . But i think if you want the radar to rotate it should be placed in the right position in stead of the radar mast glued to the front of the conning tower . I think you need to be able to get access to modeling the 3-d models for this.

I think it would be great to have a mod with rotating sonar KDB and rotating radar antenna. I would be very interested in enjoying both effects in SH3

Incredible. Just incredible:up:.

It suddenly occurs to me to ask: with the early 'pre-KDB' system, did the soundman have a wheel? If not, how did he determine direction?

Luv this idea...hope it can be done for the hydrophone and radar mast and rdf.

It suddenly occurs to me to ask: with the early 'pre-KDB' system, did the soundman have a wheel? If not, how did he determine direction?

I believe the boat had to be off set to determine where sound came from as these unit had a dead zone directly in front as the "ears" were placed along side of the hull at the front.

Gruppenhorchgerat (GHG)

The standard U-boat hydrophone, the GHG (Group Listening Apparatus) was installed in U-boats from 1935 onwards. It consisted of two sets of hydrophones mounted on each side of the bows, covering two arcs of 140 degrees on the sides of the U-boat. Because the hydrophones could not be rotated, the triangulation was most effective with sound sources coming from the sides, with deteriorating accuracy as the source moved to the front or rear of the boat. Consisting of 24 hydrophones, the GHG could pick up lone vessels up to 20 kilometers and convoys up to 100 kilometers away. The detection range however was also dependant on sea conditions.

I had often thought that in boats with out KDB systems there should be no wheel however unsure how the actual operators detected sound . Any one know?? I mean was it a case of just listening to "the water" and if you hear noise on the left speaker then the contact was starboard???? KDB system makes complete sense but GHG I dont fully follow

I think that says it all right there; he could report the angle and the captain had to turn the boat. I wondered if it KDB made much difference in the game, but I think from now on it will be my first upgrade, just on general principles.

Thanks for posting that; I think it clears up a lot.

using timetravellers tools, there's a file (can't remember which, might be the sensors.dat -- it's been a while) you can mod.

under the kdb is a setting "rotates" -- set it to yes, and the receiver rotates in time with the wheel below. when the sub is surfaced or the sound station isn't manned, the kdb won't turn.

This sounds like a great workaround..I mean it for the "realistic club" but as Sailor said it would give a stong reason to be the first upgrade.
