View Full Version : Why no big mods?

The SHIII engine is an impressive engine, no doubt. But most of the mods seem spent on making a more realistic submarine game. One thing I'm disappointed in is that compared to other games, SHIII is really lacking when it comes to unique mods.

I'll give you a perfect example of something I'd like to see for a mod. While in the library the other day, I was reading a book on Zepplins. During WWI, Germany had a bombing campaign against England, using Zeps. At the time, air warfare was in its infancy, and it actually took a while for England to make AA guns with the range to actually hit German airships. It occurred to me that it would be really cool if someone made a Zepplin mod using the SHIII engine- Altitude instead of depth, using clouds as cover instead of water. Just like U-boats, airships gradually suffered under the weight of increasing countermeasures.

I know it sounds really out there, but it was a combination of liking how much SHIII had to offer in terms of a U-boat simulator, and the realization that there aren't any airship sims out there. Even something that isn't as much of a stretch, like a mod where you play other countries, using their subs. So far the modding community has decided to stay very, very close to the original product in terms of theme and alterations. Why?

I agree with you, and thus hate to burst your bubble, but the reason why you're restricted to driving German subs is that this is so hard-coded into the game that it can't be changed. The game can't even be modded to let you drive surface ships such as destroyers.

Sorry to say so.

That's what I kind of assumed, its just really hard to totally believe. Maybe because I've seen so many mods of games that were so far removed from their original you'd be hard-pressed to guess what the engine was. A lot of this game looks very flexible; if people can make new planes/skins I can't see why you couldn't play as another country in remodeled ports and submarines. I have heard that player-controlled torpedoes are very unique (hence the reason why torpedo boats/bombers don't actually fire torpedoes) which is puzzling but then again, I'm not programmer so I'm sure there's a reason I'm not seeing.

Sigh. There go my hopes of seeing Bernards Monster Truck Rally mod of silent hunter 3 :nope:

We are limited to the games engine, now if we had a SDK or MDT then the skies the limit
Look at BF1942 with modding tools you now have versions of Vietnam, Gulfwar, even a pokemon mod. Until a SH comes with either of said tools, we are EXTREMLY limited and frustraited.

I know what you mean,

for example in the game MOH:AA
(Medal Of Honor)

they where able to create a supermod that tottally change the game

it turned into a Arcade Flight simulator that was really fun to play
it was very amusing to test the mod.

the goals was simple bomb the enemy bases. you had fighters and bombers.
the airfield where protected by AI Flak guns that really packed a punch when you came in range.
unfortuantly the damage models where based on hitpoints so it was just the matter of the amount of bullets you nailed into the enemy. but like in FPS the hitpoints varied on the locations (Cockpit and engines where critical locations to be hit on)

like in known in SH3 the limitations are on Player controlled Submarine only.
too bad thought but thats how the game has been made.

becaus if it was posible to mod the game to add new controlable ships (BBs/DDs)
and even planes that would really be a impact on the game itself. just imagine in Multiplayer that you blast eachother to pieces with Nelsons and Hyper Heavy cruisers

Yeah the FPS "Unreal Tournament 2004" had 100's of mods, there was even a 100 thousand dollar Mod contest. One of the best ones for UT2004 was "Alien Swarm", - you choose your soldiers medics, heavy gunner, grunt, etc then head out and kill aliens simular to the movie Aliens on planets or abandon warehouses. You had to seal doors or unseal them while your team were fighting of the hordes of aliens coming at ya, install gun turrents to help ya out, really cool mod yet all it was, was just a top down view RTS gameplay still it gave that atmosphere of sheer terror when playing it:D
