Is it possible to improve the details of the Nav/Mission Editor Map?

I'm just wondering that can we improve the details of the map by ourselves.

As I know, some areas in the map are totally wrong, are there any ways to improve/redraw/replace it?

No but if your in game and do Shift + I once or twice or even three times you get certain types of maps its more noticeable under or near ice fields.

We can't improve the maps in the sense of editing them, but can we change the data for instance swapping low resolution maps for high resolution maps (freely available) ?
Is it possible to mod this into the game ?
