View Full Version : Anyone still play stock?

Maybe the tinkering/modding bug is grabbing me by the nuts again, but for awhile now ive had this urge to tear it all down and go back to the basics, incorporating only real bug fixes. A sort of unoffical patch.
I know there are some folks that ive read who still prefer the original game (and many more who simply never could go back to the orginal game :D) So im just fielding the question to see if theres enough people who play stock to merit any bugfix compilation effort.

I play stock now and then, but only because that's the only way I can get peeps to play multiplayer.
I played one patrol whilst downloading the GWX beta, and I am never going back to that.

LOL. I know the feeling. What i had in mind was, again, just fixing the the stuff that was broke. The idea being to leave the orginal "gamey" game intact.

I played a patrol after making a fresh re-install. I hadn't even installed any patches at the point.
All I can say now that I've played the patched version with mods is... Wow. In a bad way.
The worst part is that I've played the unpatched version a lot before I finally upgraded. And I loved the game. Just... Wow.
No, I don't play stock. Never again.
I can;t think of a reason why you would. The two super mods and most of the other mods have made the experience so much more engaging than stock. Not going back unless on the way to installing a new super mod! Waiting patiently for GWX

I really dont think what you are planning is a waste of time, there are lots of people playing stock, and if I were one of them I would love a bug-patch to go with the 1,4b.
The think is, in a thread like this all the mod-lovers will jump in and tell that they dont like the vanilla. :D

I've done that probably a year or more ago. Even with some of the bug fixes, the stock game is so incredibly - empty. Are there even friendly's? That's gotta be so demoralizing to the crew when they don't see any friendly units. The odd friendly merchant just doesn't cut it. The only positive I can think of for stock SH3 is that it loads allot faster and the harbor framerates are more doable.:rotfl: But you know what? I don't think I could go back stock again. Sometimes I may feel like seeing what the game used to be like, but I can hardly make it past a patrol or two.

I've been playing SHIII with GW since the mod is out, and never went back to vanilla. I can't see a reason to do so.

I put the vanilla version away for over a year. I did not like the game that much until I stumbled upon the GW supermod...I have not stopped playing since and I'm quietly waiting on GWX. I would not go back to the arcade version since that is what shelved the game to begin with.

I've been playing stock since the time the game was out for about 6-8 months. Then I've discovered GW and never look back. Now with GWX approaching I finally think the game is how it should have been when it was first released.

No way. Ever since Beery put out the original Flotilla Fix mod I've been using something or other. Bordinstrumente, with it's realistic dials, Harbour Traffic, Airpower, sound mods, new ships and planes.
Even if all I could use was SH3 Commander I still wouldn't play without it. No vanilla for me, no sir!:nope:

Guys, i get the message by now. Im not going to waste my time on it. For some foolish reason i got the impression there were some people out there who did, because they hate the NYGM damage models in GW11a and NYGM. Judging by the reactions im guessing most just replied to the post title, and the subject itself is tantamount to making a post on religion. I get the hint.

I assume you mean GW and NYGM? WAC isn't considered a super mod?
btw, what does NYGM stand for?

.....btw, what does NYGM stand for?
Not Your Grand Mothers (IIRC - it's been awhile since it was used)
Jeeze it does seem like a rather obscure reference for a computer game. I mean I'm pretty sure my grandma wouldn't know what a computer is. She's a doll but the only thing she's read for the last 25 years is Star Magazine.
Its very serious stuff you know, whos not fat anymore, and who killed Princess Di, and how Angelina Jolie stole her baby from Africa with Marians while Madonna used a commando group from Venus.

??? The first part (the main .exe) is 535 KILObytes, as in roughly one half of one megabyte. The remaining four parts (the .bin files) are no larger than 170mb each.
I can't simply not find a reason to play stock.........

I still play stock. Why... becuase I want to play the game the way the developers made it. But this is also why after playing one full career, I stopped playing it for almost 1 yr. It was boring... and with the bugs in the game, disappointing.
The bugs that really turned me off:
1) Schnorkel being detected as if the whole Uboat was above water.
2) The "random" (random must mean rain and high waves 90% of the time) weather where I can start a patrol to the coast of the USA and end it with the weather never changing.
3) The XXI being TOTALLY screwed up, with the batter recharge bug, schnorkel bug, radar being destroyed all the time bug, the Niebelung sonar torpedo control being screwed up.
4) The 2 extremes of the enemy DDs we face. Either they are totally incompetent and you can easily loose them, to the ones that are UBER DDs that can drop a single Depth Charge on top of your conning tower while you are submerged and running silent.
Those are the Top 4 in my mind.... I know there are many others. I know there are weather fixes, schnorkle fix, and DD fixes out there. But being as I was out of action on the forums for so long, I cant seem to find them or the ones I do find there seem to be multiple fixes/versions and I dont know which one is the best one.
But I would LOVE a VANILLA mod that attempts to collect all the BUG fixes without modifying the game play as a whole.
THe main reason I havent tried other big mods (like RUB) is I dont like mods that FORCE you to have to do TDC calcs (I do math all day at work..last thing I want to do at home), or that take away Radio contacts on your map. I understand why some like this for realism. But I play this game as part simulation and part GAME. If we really wanted 100% realism we would be lucky to bag 12,000 tons every other patrol.
I am eagerly awaiting the GWX mod as it seems to fix just about everything. Some of the things that change the vanilla version....Im not sure I will like. But if I dont find a way to fix this game, I fear I will stop playing it again. Im in my second career (Apr 1942) and already growing bored.
With that said..... what mod (or single mod combined with other tweaked files) would you guys reccomend that may fix my top four, and do you have links for all of them? I really woould like to try something different until GWX comes out (especially since I cant use my 2nd career and have to start over...might as well re-install fresh when GWX comes out).

Played stock version until I "discovered" SUBSIM and U-Boot.RealSimulation. Then my "sub life" totally changed to a whole new experience thanks to each and every one of you. Started with a few simple mods, then to GW. I will never go back!
I'm kinda like South Park's Eric Cartman waiting on GWX. Maybe I should freeze myself until next month. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

@ Ducimus
This is a good idea as many people's computers can't always manage the super-mods. The one 'sticking' point would be....Have you started this already?
If so, it's worth seeing it through.
There have been some replies here from people who play stock, but how many play stock and don't post on Subsim?(Stowaways:shifty:)
I know I would give it a go, if you were going to include things like your personal choice of sensors etc....

Nope, after the idea was throughly shot down i just didn't start it. As an aside, Faamecanic's 4 major points are easily addressed and solved.
The things i had in mind as a "patch" were.
1. using the latest version of Improved convoy's This would address the stock convoy behavior. Then id merge in a few of my own creations that add more traffic/convoys in a couple theaters. I'd Probably remove most elites and increase spawn rates that were reduced by I.C.
2. Was debating to include the latest NYGM tower fixes. This would however increase the size of the D/L. Hence my hesitation. Idea is to fix without getting the D/L large.
3. Interior guage fixes
4. Add in habor traffic in enemy ports, add a couple more ports (not many though), and leave german ports relatively empty except for specail scripted events like the Bismark docked at keel or whatever.
5. Uboat fixes. As well as the XXI. Von and i fixed that one a long time ago. Generally speaking stock uboats were sucky and not very historically accurate.
6. Thought about incorporating bits of FLB's NaviMap mod. The time/speed charts in particuarl i highly prize in any game.
7. Also maybe a one of the periscope and UZO TDC addons ive seen floating around.
8. One of GouldJgs zones.cfg file ive been using. Ships explode really nice with it :88), and it improves on the Uboat damage model, although i think id increase the rate at which water can be pumped out.
9. Minor tweaks to the Sim.cfg file to improve AI. Minor tweaks to the AI_sensor.dat to addresss snorkel issues.
10. Minor tweaks to the basic.cfg to fix some erronus stuff, and remove fatigue altogther.
11. Minor tweaks to the En_commands.cfg that allows a "goback" function that returns you to the previous vew. I forget who came up with it orginally but ive always used it. Very handy.
12. Time permitting, various tweaks to the crew configuration files so the crew you start out with is a bit more logical in its composition with varied uniforms and voices.
13. Tweaks to /data/sea/* config files to add in leigh lights and fix broken stuff in stock.
Except for the conning towers, most everythign there is just a small file. Thats what i had in mind, but...i dunno now.

Ducimus....
I think by asking the question here in the SH3 MOD forums has more than tainted your sample. A better place to ask wouldl have either been in the normal Radio Room SH3 forums...or better yet on the ubi forums.
I think your idea sounds AWESOME as it would still allow those of us that want to play with the realism WE, the individual player, woudl like. I know...some say its cheesy or arcade mode playing stock (actually stock is a BUGGY incomplete arcade mode)...but I as I stated in my other post, would like to play a stock/vanillia mode WITH the bugs addressed.
Also ....I will say again, to the person just coming into the forums, it is VERY confusing if not impossible to tell WHICH mod (I think GWX will be the first) adds for the most realistic experience. And I know some love the more realistic stuff...but I personally dont like the manual TDC stuff. That is what is right for me... but maybe not for others. And by what I have read on the mods..it seems like most FORCE the player to do this...I could be wrong so dont shoot me if I am here.

I might still make said patch. I happen to like playing vanilla once in awhile. I've played SH3 in every way imaginable, sometimes its more fun to play stock/arcade mode, or make yourself some super boat that defies the imagination (not to mention gravity  ).

yah, gimme a couple mins and ill upload it. I forget who's concept it was orginally. Either CCIP's or Berry's, i forget.
edit:
here you go
http://ducimus.net/sh3/commands_en.zip
Functionatiy, use the INS key on the numbered keypad. Make sure NumberLock is on for it to work correctly. Theres acutaly two versions you can make of this, depending on the interior your using. For example if you use a type IX when using the observaton periscope youd want the camera to return to the coning tower view. If using a type VII, after using the obs scope youd want to return to the aft control room (or forward control room if using NYGM 2.2)
Right now i have the obs scope go back function to where it returns you to the forward control room camera. Other then that, everythign has a previous camera view. Messages will return you to the radio room, I think i have the TDC to where it return you to the conning tower. Naviagation maps goes back to the control room, etc etc. Its all logically layed out.
Again, not my orginal concept.

I never played vanilla sh3 , first little mods and after Rub 1.44 customized by myself with other downloaded mods .
i used Rub as a core of a bigger pack with little upgrades .
the problem with big packs is that are great but are very difficult tweak and customize, sometimes there are things that donīt like or you prefer another thing.
and a lot of things could be done with small mods
i downloaded nygm and Gw time ago but iīm very happy with my setup now, perhaps i will try other packs when i reinstall the game . :88)

Commands_en was tweaked this way before CCIP or Beery were even on horizon.
As to bug fixing, some bug-fixing pack for a stock version was compiled while back by Syxx_Killer.
