I've played numerous campaigns in vanilla sh3 and I've yet to see the hedgehog. I'd play the numerous mods but i have dialup and I don't relish the idea of downloading something the size of the GW mod.
So what year do they appear??

Hedgehog, also known as an Anti-Submarine Projector entered service in 1943.
Hedgehog was replaced by the more effective Squid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid_%28weapon%29) mortar in 1943 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943) and this in turn was replaced by the three-barreled Limbo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo_%28weapon%29). The United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) produced a similar weapon called Mousetrap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mousetrap_%28weapon%29).
I remember a great thread many months ago when someone posted pics of a hedgehog attack.:o
It was a real news storm. Damn its a rare occurence.

In my '44 career, I have DDs use them all the time against me. They're really annoying because if they go off above you, you're pretty much screwed. They sink fast and explode on contact.
You can tell they are using them because they make this DEAFENING sound when launched.

I,ve met Flowers late war that has them too.
I was busy with a convoy when I heard something close...I looked around saw the bow of the Flower and I saw that he was shooting a ring of death , well at least where I was floating (PD). I took the whole package....Got rammed afterwards and Depth charged ... my IXD2 managed to repair the flooding but the flower and his pesky friends came again and sunk me too the bottom..
Hedgehog best anti tactic , stay undetected!:rotfl:

I understand that the Hedgehog is fired in an elliptic or U-shape form, right? Wouldn't it possible to go back emergency as soon as you hear them launch and thus not being hit?:hmm:

For my understanding what I have seen in Docs and Film pieces of the ww2 era that they have been fired in a ring-shape.

Realistically speaking, you'd never hear them launch. And you'd be extraordinarily lucky to hear them hit the water for that matter. Normally the first (and only) indication that you'd had a hedgehog attack launched at you was the explosion when one impacted your hull.
Also, their pattern was either circular or elliptical.
(See here for an excellent description of the weapon: http://www.de220.com/Armament/Hedgehog/Hedgehog.htm )

Ring shape in the game. I try to hit flank speed and turn hard when I think he is making his run. Sometimes works to avoid one or two sets. Soon as he drops his presents I go back to dead slow and change direction and depth.

I only saw them once and that was the the last thing I saw that mission
Found this on Wikipedia
Variants
Mark 10: elliptical pattern measuring about 140 x 120 feet to a range of 200 yards
Mark 11: circular pattern measuring 200 feet in diameter out to a range of about 188 yards.
Mark 15: pattern as for the Mark 11 but mounted on a platform adapted from that of a quadruple 40 mm Bofors gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors_gun) mount. The Mark 15 could be fired remotely from the ship's plotting rooSo everyones right!! Especially me:)

Try one of the single missions if you want to get a grip on what the hedgehog can do. When they hit they HIT! Especially if your at periscope depth further down tho they dont do damage.

further down tho they dont do damage.
??? The damage is worse if anything because your deeper. Or do you mean they probably wont hit you?
Great Sig kiwi, where'd you get the pic?

Yep i meant deeper they wont hit you as they usually cause more damage at periscope depth (hegdehogs)
Got the Sig from a snap shot i took of "Enigma" movie.
Go here to see snap shots from the movie - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=101075

Ive read the book, the movie looks half watchable. Are there much at sea uboat scenes?? I know Kate Winslet is in it, i'd nearly watch it just for that.

She is made to look geeky looking in it if I remember correctly.

 :nope: :damn: :nope:
The idea behind a hedgehog was that she was firstly forward firing which was a new and needed thing and also since the charges were impact only they made it so that the escort wouldn't lose contact unless there was a hit. The last thing was that usually one hedgehog hit was enough to make a boat go down. Thats a powerful point blank hit on the pressure hull.
Not sure myself as to its effectiveness as I have never been attacked by one.

I've been attacked several times by them, and mercifully they've always missed. I'm really not looking forward to getting nailed by one my first time.

Trust me, the first time you get nailed with one will be the last time too. Those things are friggin deadly. I've only had it happen to me twice, but both times it was all she wrote.

At least the explosive charge is smaller compared with a depth charge, but it falls very fast.
in u-505 mission the scorts are equiped with hedgehog, its a good training :dead:
Though the charge is smaller it is more deadly because they are more accurate and are deployed in great numbers. Depth charges have to be larger because they are like artillery weapons that deal indirect damage. A depth charge is a realative shot in the dark. A hedgehog is more like a grenade than a piece of artillery. They are directed and are easier to observe. Theres no chance of getting a false positive with a hedgehog. The charge needs only be small by comparison because it is only going to detonate when in direct contact with a subs hull which is like a point blank shot.
Overall its spooky when you consider the realities of this weapon.

If you want to see what a hedge hog looks like as it come for you, look below!

This was the second attack with Hedgehogs (you can see the marks of the first), two of the ones shown hit, it didn't kill me, but the depthcharges that followed did!
Hedgehogs in most cases didn't kill subs, they damaged them to the poit where they would have to surface, or made them an easier target. Escort captains liked it as they could keep contact with a possible contact throught the engagement, so the enemy couldn't dodge as well. They also didn't go off unless they hit the sub, so there was no disturbance in the water that could mask a sub getting away

Well put it this way Das Boot makes Enigma look like sh*t.:arrgh!:
Only about 15-20min of uboats and all you see is them moving along the ocean no crash diving/depth charging hair pulling suspense. More a drama about the code breakers, okay story if you accept their be little action.

Remember kids, depth is your friend. The deeper you are, the harder it is to hit you.
As far as turning when you are under attack, I dont do this because it slows your boat down. Once the DCs or hedges have left their ship, they do not adjust so you want to get as far away as possible. You can only do this with depth (longer time till contact) and speed (cant hit you if youre not there). Dont hit full ahead until AFTER the first DC explosion. The sound will mask your noisy props for a minute or so. And if you get hit by a hedgehog, you need to be plugging the leaks.
If there are DDs on the hunt, only the dead stay shallow.
