View Full Version : Yet another new plane for SH3
Armstrong whitworth whitley in progress when its done i'll be happy to hand the obj. model over to Anvart, bigboywoli, serg or someone to mod in to sh3 as i cannot do this myself, its way over my head. If any of you guys can help please pm me. should be complete in a few days. My next project will either be a Halifax or a B17.
Cheers

Nice looking plane JU88
As to importing the aircraft - dont look at me :rotfl:
An idea for future aircraft would be to take an existing plane - say the B24
Export the .obj then either import your .obj into that dat or rework the B24 parts to get the shape of the new parts then import again
how the hell do you place guns on an aicraft? I mean positon them, surely that has to be done in a 3d editor like max?
It tried it before, i dont have the right type of brain for it, if someone can help me make a mod out of this - then great, if not - then too bad.

I´ve not modded any type of acft yet. But I think it will be the same issue as for the ships. You´ll have to model the guns with your 3D programm, export them as *.obj and put them into a separate *.dat file. In your PLANE.DAT you use the Nodes (cfg#A/L/M) under non3D to position them. And the *.eqp that comes with the plane is used to attach them to the plane ingame.
Forgive me if I´m mistaken. I´m doing this from memory, actually. I´ll give you more information, if needed, when back at home.
Regards,
DD
woah... thanks, not sure if thats all that clear to me
(Im a total noob at this.)
ill give it a try.. think I still have pack3d somewhere, but i found it frustrating to use, maybe I need a different version, last time i got pissed off with it and gave up.:nope:
anotherthing, all the sh3 stock planes are chopped up in pieces for damage modelling purposes i guess, do i need to do the same with my model?
Yes, I would do so - and make the individual parts correspond to the stock parts in the .dat you are using, so that the damage model will work properly. You may want to export the .obj files in a .dat first to see how it has been done for a stock aircraft.:yep: Although, actually, it seems as if you have already done that.

The Arado has only 3 3d objects
Take a look at that dat with pack3d Version 3
May save you chopping it up

Looking good to me.:rock:We don't get new aircraft for SHIII too often, and one of this high level of quality is a great addition, IMO.

I'll second that  Things are really looking up for us aircraft nuts!
Only slightly discordant thing I can see at the moment is the blue in the upper wings/fuselage camo. This should be grey but I guess you know that already ;)
Keep up the good work, Kaleun, and when can we expect to get it???

I dont know. If the plane is assigned to ASW, dont you think that they would use blue instead of grey? Im not saying that is correct but it does make more sense with the blue/green than the grey/green.
Maybe someone can give me some clarification here.
Maybe the blue should be more grey, Im always confused with Coastal Command colours, the stock planes in sh3 seem to have the green and brown livery of bomber command. Should be easy to adjust the coloyrs in PS, (thanks for pointing it out)
I saw a photo of Coastal Command Whitley that was pure white with no camo at all, LOL - I could have skinned my model with that if i had felt lazy  - but i never did like the 'albino' look.
I will do a B17-F and a Hienkel 111 next. I will try to make two skins for the B-17, one for RAF/CC and one USAF. maybe a good samaritan from these forums will volenteer to do one for me.
Then maybe if i have time I will rework the meshes and completely reskin sh3s stock models for the Junkers 88 and wellington bombers as they both look like ugly crap!

It probably would have made more sense to be blue, but Coastal Command didn't seem to see it that way :D
Ju88 is correct that early war coastal command aircraft were usually painted in normal bomber camo. However late in 1942 they adopted a new colour scheme, which they used on the Whitleys that were on ASW duties. Have just seen an illustration of one which closely resembles Ju88's scheme i.e.just the top of fuselage camo'd. Only difference being that they a used a light grey instead of the blue. Don't have a scanner so I can't put up a piccy  The sides seemed to be white.
I sort of assumed Ju 88 knew this already as he had used the top surface/white sides camouflage rather than the " down to wingroot" brown and green standard bomber colours.
Hope you don't think I'm being too picky! It's a great model and I'd be happy to get it whatever colour it was painted.......except pink!!!!
***** On second thoughts, think CC got it right.....just tried to remember where they could have flown over blue water !!!
how about a pink hienkel, they had them! dont think they saw service over the atlantiv ocean though:lol: :sunny:

Yes, B-17 is very good idea. One of the most important planes during Battle for Atlantic

Pink Heinkels :o :o Just imagine one of them caught in a searchlight beam!!!
Seriously though, you're pulling my leg, right???
Oh BTW, found a website which has a picture of the Whitley that was in my book:-
http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww2/b/553/9/1/13
Just to confound matters there is another one shown on same page, which has a much darker grey-blue colouring to go with green on top surfaces. Dunno which is right - maybe both!

Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs - that certainly does look queer!!!...as they might say up Yorkshire way.
When you mentioned Pink Heinkel I thought it just possible that Hermann Goering may have had a personal transport specially done to match his pink Luftwaffe uniform!
It certainly wasn't a standard Luftwaffe colour, as I found out after looking through 1) The Official Monogram Painting Guide to German Aircraft (complete with authentic paint chips ), and 2,3,4) all three volumes of Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings 1939-45.
Seriously though, I think it is a highly sunbleached example of RLM 79 Sandgelb, taken with an equally weathered film and produced by a very dodgy colour process. That lion cub couldn't be the pilot either...it's feet wouldn't reach the rudder pedals :)
How's the Whitley doing? and what 3D modelling program do you use? I'm thinking of having a go myself.
Cheers
PS Just re-read your post further up - you're using 3D Max. That costs real money doesn't it! May have to put modelling ambitions on hold..unless you can suggest a free one!
edit 2 No need to answer this bit....just seen Seth and Flakmonkey talking about this on over on the interiors thread. I'll do a bit of eavesdropping over there ;)
