you ought to try this model in sh3 youd be surprised just how many polys the engine can handle! (youd have to convert all those 4 sided polys to triangles though)

LOL, you could say that we've learned a thing or two about graphics and 3D modelling... we've been working on a little project for a little while now.:rotfl:

I don’t know, I think it’s a really big maybe. I’ve seen the Crysis videos, and the Flight Simulator DX10 concept shots and the Intel presentation of quad core with the Alan Wake video, and my bet is that we’re still at least two GPU generations away from that. With generations I mean new architectures, not just refreshes. I’m no industry insider, so I can only guess.

You all have said it before, but this model is really a stunner! I hope that those graphics will become a reality when SH V hits the shelves.
If you look at SH I, SH II and now SHIII it really shouldn' take too long.

Anyways, some more info on these renders would be nice. Or maybe a link for desktop sized pics? I couldn't find any smegma-films!

In Half-Life 2 you have parts where it looks fantastic from the distance, and when you go near is all textures and tricks, but those are probably polys (AND monster textures). I don’t see a GPU pushing so much information in the near future, or maybe as a slide show. Hardly anything can run Oblivion with all the detail cranked up. But of course, I wish the next sub sim will look like that :).

They are working on a new kind of texture format that reduces the size of the texture, so graphics like that could be possible with our current rigs.

Here is an interesting article on Procedural Textures (http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2006/11/09/Procedural_Textures_Future_Gam/1.html), a technology which may well be the future of how textures are generated and used in games. Essentially textures can look just as good if not better than they do now, but take up a fraction of the size and also become more dynamic throughout a game. To see some examples, check out this screenshot gallery (http://www.profxengine.com/index.php?PAGE=GALLERY). Furthermore it turns out that the game RoboBlitz we discussed earlier uses procedural textures to reduce the full game to 350MB for PC, and only 50MB for XBox 360. This shows that there are companies out there working on innovative software-based solutions to improve gaming, not just hardware-based solutions which require us spending more money.

Maybe, but I’m convinced our modders could make stuff that comes close to that. I don’t know how difficult or time-consuming is to make a model like that, but maybe the guy spent days working on that VIIC.
