View Full Version : Resolution problem
I've changed my old 17' CRT Samsung for 19' LCD BenQ FP93GX (really fast, good for games) and I wanted to play SH3 at 1280x1024 resolution. I've found one recipe for change resolution at Community manual site, made everything like was written there, but unfortunately nothing happend - SH3 starts at 1024x768 again.Looking here at subsim.com I've found second solution - SH3_SP2_Res_fix. It was wrong way too, nothing changed. What should I do to force SH3 start at 1280x1024?I don't know what should I do.Using SH3_SP2_res_fix I copy d3d9.cfg and d3d9.dll (from dx9res10.zip) to SH3 directory, after that copy SP2 Res fix.bat, SP2 Res fix uninstal.bat and SHIII.sdb and run SP2 Res fix.bat at least. In dx9res10 readme I see "Edit the cfg file for resolution and other settings", but I don't know what to do, which file edit.Could somebody using this fix explain me how to activate it?
If you use the steps in the wiki EXACTLY as they say, it works. I know, I have 1600x1200 right now.
And the default value in the d3d9 is 1280x1024, so you dont have to change anything to get that value.
You must have done something wrong.
If you use service pack 2, you need the windows aplication toolkit.

he also needs netframework 1 or 2 on the system...i run both systems here using the d3d9 files with the toolkit ..sounds like you need to slow down a bit ..reread the instructions...it works.. if you follow it to the letter...i run at 1600x1200 andthe same on the wifes system

Does it mean that I should install .NET Framework first, after that copy dx9res10.zip to SH3 folder and next SH3_SP2_Res_fix?
1280x1024 resolution doesn't work without NET Framework?
Maybe stupid, but how to try what resolution is using in SH3?

What happens when you play the game in 1024x768 ? do you loss too much image quality ? :hmm:
There is a big difference between 1280x1024 and 1024x768 on 19" LCD in games. Try to play at 800x600 on 17" CRT monitor (native 1024x768) and you feel and see difference. I liked to play 1024x768 on 17" CRT, but I'd like to play 1280x1024 on 19".
I'll have to play 1024x768, if I don't fix it. It's not terrible, but frustrated.
What size monitor do you have, Redwine?

I ask you because i need to decide this next monday if to buy or not a VX-922...
Really i dont like any LCD i had seen... VX-922 is good for sims, but had low contrast ratio, those with high contrast ratio like VP-930 has good image quality but are not so good for sims because has not low response time...
I really dont like any one, i am enloved of my CTR NEC Croma Clear, colours are amazing, and the LCD i had seen do not reach its vivid colours. :hmm:, all them are only 16 million colours.
I ask you if you loss too much image quality at 1024 on a 19", because the VX-922 has 1280 native res, and i want to maintain actual 1024 to not increase GPU charge.
Redwine, I think exactly like you, good CRT has much better colours and angle views than LCD. I read many articles about LCD monitors before buy and I think about VX-922 too. I looked for MVA/PVA, but decided for TN - I don't like ghosts in games and BenQ FP93GX is one of the fastest 19" LCD (2 ms response time gtg, official CS competitions LCD).
Every 19" LCD has native res 1280x1024 and this is the best looking res for this monitors, but SH3 at 1024x768 doesn't look bad. 1280x1024 however looks better in games, I changed my res in CoD2, FarCry, Sturmovik, Falcon:AF etc. and these games look fantastic.

That was i want to know....
Thanks in advance, Red.
Redwine, if you are looking for monitor mainly for gaming and internet (especially FPS and flight simulators, when fast response is strongly needed), BenQ FP93GX is one of the best. If you want to watch tv or films, better to buy MVA/PVA/IPS monitor - but I watch films only on my 32" Samsung LCD TV.
Look at this site and read more about this LCD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824014111
BTW, contrast ratio is 700:1
Cheers mate, you have problem, because it's very difficult to choose LCD monitor, I know it very much. ;)

I cant decline the need for flight sims, and subsims. :p but i need it for digital photo processing too....

The VX-922 2ms has 1:650 only.... the problem is i need to manage digital photo, and some places talk about a 1:1000 minimun for digital photo management, the VP-930 has it,1:1500 but only 8ms grey-white-grey and 20ms black-white-black or on-off-on, not good for sims. :hmm:
PD : BenQ is 208.99 USD !! The VX-922 is 600 USD here !! :damn:
Cheers mate, you have problem, because it's very difficult to choose LCD monitor, I know it very much. ;)
Yes i know, really i cant decide for any one.... :damn: but i need a new one, i am not a kid and need a bigest screen.
The option is to have two computers, but i live in apartament and has not too much free space.
Really i dont knwo what to do tomorrow monday.... because it is the last VX-922 abailable, it is out of stock at every place here...
Could somebody tell me clearly - is it necessary to install NET Framework before using dx9res10 from Kegetys and SH3_SP2_Res_fix from Sartori23 or not?

Interesting thread. a very difficult buy, speed or bright... but not the two things
where can i download the resolution fix ??
I have a Crt 17" monitor , and it works very well, but in the future i will buy a new Lcd, and the crt could be impossible to find.
Redwine donīt buy two computers, buy two Lcd monitors ...:rotfl: are small and easy to hide, or is possible put it on the wall like a picture.
You can download SH3_SP2_Res_fix from uboat.realsimulation.com
I wanted to make screenshot from the game (I read somewhere that is easy way for info about game resolution), press CTRL+F11, but nothing happend - I can't find screenshot anywhere in SH3 folder. What's this?:hmm:

You dont know another of my problems.... i am tired to fight with my kid for the computer !! :rotfl:
As Jaxa mentioned, you can download it from Terrapin web site....

Extrange, Crtl + F11 must take the screen into the SH3 main folder, may be you have a mod wich had changed the keyboard map ?
Be ware with Shift + F11, it take a continuous screen shots as a machinegun....

Display Resolution
As installed, SH3 doesn't offer you a choice for a display resolution setting. The game fixes it at 1024 x 768.
To override this limitation, SH3 modmaker Kegetys has developed a DLL file that permits greater display resolutions when playing SH3. Kegetys' SH3 Resolution Override DLL can be downloaded from one of the following links:
Mirror 1 (http://koti.mbnet.fi/kegetys/dl.php?f=dx9res10&e=zip) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/kegetys/dl.php?f=dx9res10&e=zip)
Mirror 2 (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/dx9res10.zip) (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/dx9res10.zip)
Mirror 3 (http://www.filefront.com/?filepath=/theofpfaq/sh3/SH3_Mod_DirectX9Res10.zip) (http://www.filefront.com/?filepath=/theofpfaq/sh3/SH3_Mod_DirectX9Res10.zip)Make sure you read the enclosed instructions to customize the DLL's configuration file, d3d9.cfg.
For Windows XP SP2 users:
We're not finished yet. In order to get Kegetys' DLL to work, you'll also need to install Microsoft's Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/appcompatibility/default.mspx) (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/appcompatibility/default.mspx) and perform the following procedure to customize it for SH3:
On Windows' Start menu, select "All Programs/Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0/Tools" and run the Compatibility Administrator.
When the program opens, make sure "New Database" is highlighted under "Custom Databases", and click the "Fix" button.
In the "Name of program to be fixed" box, type "SH3". Now, click the browse button, and select the sh3.exe in your SH3 install directory. Then click on the "Next" button.
Under "Operating System Modes" select "None" and click the "Next" button.
In the "Compatibility Fixes" box, check DelayDLLInit, and click the "Parameters" button.
In the "Command Line" box, type "d3d9.dll" and click "OK". (You can click the "Test Run" button to make sure it is working). Click the "Next" button.
Click on the "Finish" button. Then click the "Save" button, name it "SH3", and click OK.
On the "File" menu, select "Install".
Close the Compatibilty Administrator.
Enjoy SH3 in high display resolution.

I don't like ghosts in games and BenQ FP93GX is one of the fastest 19" LCD (2 ms response time gtg, official CS competitions LCD).
Motion blur and ghosting are completely different things. You are referring to motion blur. Ghosting is impossible if you are using DVI.
the problem is i need to manage digital photo, and some places talk about a 1:1000 minimun for digital photo management
I've posted more extensively about LCDs elsewhere but for now I'll repeat:
1. For applications like that avoid any 6-bit LCD monitor like the plague as they cannot show the full colour spectrum. They use dithering to try to compensate but that sacrifices sharpness.
2. Don't trust any manufacturer's claimed contrast ratio. They lie. Only trust quality independant reviews.
Potoroo, you have right, I talked about motion blur of course.

I did it exactly as you described, but with no results.:hmm:
I can't check it now, because I must do GWX beta tests without any modifications of the game.
Thanks to all for help, I did it once again and it works now
