View Full Version : just about to give up again
i was looking forward to some nice relaxing sub action after being away from the game for some time. i figuered (sp?) with all the great work the community has put into this program it'll be a blast but now i'm getting really frustrated:
i have been forced to restart a new campaign COUNTLESS times because of different things; first time was because i didn't remember that you can't delete old savegames without loosing all newer ones as well (although that can be avoided so it only happened once). then there were several occations where my savegames have become corrupted: once i decided to call it a night and continue the next day only to find my boat in a free fall sinking like 150m in less than 10 seconds and being destroyed as it reached the maximum depth. other times i reload my savegame and i find myself on a completely different depth than before (wich can resut in crashing into something).
now i just started a new campaign and was sailing through the channel (which was *swarming* with english warships in 1939?) at around 17-20 meters going silent and suddenly i'm dead - no warning whatsoever. so i decide to quit for a while until my frustration passes and then try again (I've made a new savegame everytime i saved just to be sure). now a few minutes ago i decided to give it another shot only to find that ALL my savegames are gone! the savegame files are still in the sh3 folder in my documents but sh3 seems to ignore them. WTF?
anyways i hope somebody can help me - i'm not sure if i have the patience to start yet another career (only to find it broken after a while)...
i am running sh3 1.4b with the latest GW mod installed.

Ok, first of all. Did you put in GW mod? Was it a clean install...I MEAN CLEAN!!! you must get rid of everything. Use search to get the orphan folders. Get rid of the fold in MY DOCUMENTS. GET RID OF EVERYTHING! Reinstall and install patch 1.4b (make sure it is the correct patch there are 4 to choose from) then install GW mod. You should have no problem. As far as the channel, stay away...bad now even in 1939. Also, sounds like you hit a mine while in the channel. GW puts mines in the ports and such. These can ruin a whole day! Captain you boat as if this was for real and you should be fine!
:rotfl:I dont mean to laugh, but I cant help it! We have all been there, and what you are suffering can easily be fixed.
*Never save submerged, and/or in the vicinity of ports or enemies. If you follow these steps you can have one carreer for as long as you want. I`ve never - yes NEVER - experienced carreer problems after somebody told me this.
*What killed you in the channel is a mine. They are supposed to be there, to keep kaleuns such as yourself out of Churchills front yard.

I find that odd because I have saved both submerged and under a convoy with destroyers actively tail grabb'in me. I have never had an issue. Only once did a save become corrupted. Do you mean a quick save and resume the game or save and quit the game until later? The reason I ask because I never do quick saves. Never had too as my CPU does not crash or do other assorted nonsense to make me conduct quick saves.
I mean any save. One day it will bite you in the backside, avg, it has to so many others. Its not that hard to adjust to this really, I actually dont even think about it anymore. Calm seas on the surface, no contacts in range - save. (The bit about calm seas is not important, just an effect, hehe)

I've had both these things happen to me. The first was deleting an old save and losing the lot - how cr*p is that? Why didn't they warn us? Why offer the option if it's going to screw up all the saved games?
I've also had the "dropping like a stone until you're all killed" effect as well, and I wasn't submerged when I saved either.
I'm carrying on with the game, but honestly these bugs suck!!
wow, you two were fast :) thanks for taking the time.
yes it was a complete reinstall (no leftover folders - even cleaned up the registry).
as for your gameplay suggestions: what are areas you should avoid because of mines? i'm sure the captains those days had some general knowledge about which areas to avoid because of minefields? did they always sail all the way around the north of england to get to the atlantic?
edit: waited too long to push the post button again :D thanks to ALL of you :)

True they suck but, once you get into a game and understand the stupid little bugs....you will not care because this game become a drug and you will do anything to keep it going:smug:

Thats what this forum is about:up: Stay out of the channel...period! Go around the north tip of England. Ports have mines also so you enter at your own risk. ENJOY!

I only did a save like that one and I guess I escaped this bug. Usually I do not save insight of destroyers. I usually do save around merchants weather going down or I'm planning my attack...hell sometimes the wife calls for something other than putting out the trash and got to save:lol::roll:
Yes. ports have mines too. You can spot them with free cam (if you use that), or by raising the periscope just a little bit.
I dont go through the channel anymore, not just because of mines. The brits have 1 million destroyers and their little friends.

Here I am trying to get through the channel as well.. you can't see it but there's 5 other escorts attacking me and 3 other mines in visual range. Plenty more beyond that.

Here was my greeting card around Calais. I was hating life at this point. I had already hit a mine. No hydrophone or periscopes. I was blind and deaf. I believe I was saved by the cannon as this was bent and destroyed along with the conning tower. I do not believe you will have any issue with these mods you are considering. You can always ask in the mod forum to be sure!

You are so very right I'm totaly hooked already. I just think it's shamefull that these companies charge money (and quite a bit sometimes) for a half finished product. If I was to behave like that at work .... well we know the rest don't we?
Anyway as I said I love the game and can't wait to get back to it

sh3gen really isn't a mod. It has no effect on gameplay. Very simple program.
The weather mod is very basic and simple too. It will be activated automatically if you also use the SH3 Commander mod.
Good Luck, don't give up.

True, I got this game about two years ago. Played for a while and went on to IL2. I just happend upon the GW super mod and have not stopped playing since I loaded it on to the hard drive. Thankfully we have some talented individuals that create these mods for free and make the game what it should have been. So no complaints here mate:D More mods to come plus SH4 that I hope the developers put in what they have learned the hard way with SH3. I can't wait to see what the modders do with SH4:rock:

There is a reason they call it the ENGLISH Channel. The very first thing they did was start mining and patrolling the Channel. It was considered the very worst place for a u-boat to be at any time. GW and NYGM both reflect this very well.

GW is a brilliant mod and creates a totally new experience to the game. It is true that there are a few 'issues' with savegames etc but it's not the end of the world. The game is stable and very addictive. After I've installed GW I never looked back. I cannot even remember how the stock game look like :D :D :D
