View Full Version : I have a love hate relationship with GW

I love the GW mod anywhere but in the harbours
I absolutly despise the GW mod in the harbours
Has anyone found a way to speed up leaving the harbours at the start of the mission? Currently I am in Laurent and it takes me about 20-30 minutes (real time not game time) just to maneuver through the harbour with my crew calling out every single friendly boat and plane and dropping the TC down to 1 and worse keeping the TC at 1 :damn:
I am all for realism but this much realism at the start of the mission is a drain on my fun.
Am I doomed to have to listen to my watch call out every ship in a friendly port?
"ship sighted bearing 045 close range"! No S*it sherlock, we are in a busy port!

LOL... Well, we are working on a "No harbor traffic" optional mod to accommodate gentlemen faced with your predicament. Hang in there.:arrgh!:
In the meantime, if you are listening to your crew in English... Try setting the crew speech to German and play using English subtitles... A whole new thing is born in the process...
You'll see what I mean the first time your hit the "C" button.

That "no harbour traffic" would be great.
Everyonce in a while, while stuck in the harbour rush hour, I start targetting German ships (especially ones my crew is so insistant on calling out). Range, bearing, AOB, depth... and my finger just hovers by the pretty red button...thinkin... just thinkin.
A harbour mod would be an excellent addition to a great mod. You really don't want a young Kaluen with "road rage" with a red button (oh that button is so close)
Thanks for a most excellent mod and I can't wait for the next one. Thanks for making the game more fun (and frustrating)

Come on, you must be kidding. I have radar and sonar and the whole gift shop in '39, my guys are callung out ships all the time, but I always come out in 2 min time (it takes me 2 extra to plot the course). Use SH3 Commander and beef up some of the TC numbers! You'll be fine. Just keep clicking the "+" botton all the time :)

I agree. The harbour traffic is one of the wonderful parts of GW. I usually use SH3 Commader to alter the time speed settings. It's really easy. If you don't want to change the settings you can use your external camera to have a look around. The graphics of GW are so wonderful time passes without realising it:D

SH3 is certainly better with German voices but English text! Definately the way to play.
As for the Harbor Traffic thing, really my only complaint was with the aircraft, since they are the only things that drop you down to a 1x TC. That said, I absolutely love the flybys! Perhaps a compromise would be to have the planes do two flybys maybe rather than contantly circling the area? I really do enjoy the extra ships though.

Harbor Trafiic is the main reason I use GW ove NYGM. I love a lot of the "in game" changes HYGM made but GW kept the full Harbor traffic mod and left the main game interface" intact. I've loved HT since I used in in Rub.

As was mentioned b4, get the SH3 Commander mod, then you can make some adjustments. Though you might want to change the settings back once out of the harbor.

I have never used the CH3 Commander mod. In reading about it, it did not sound all that good. But I notice that many people use it. What is the primary advangate of the CH3 Commander mod?
And can I use it in conjunction with the GW mod? Or is the CH3 Commander mod in place of the GW mod

You can use them together with no problem. Just read the SH3 Commander readme and off you go!
If it makes you feel any better... I have a love-hate relationship with GW too... and GWX... The only "playing-time" I get is when testing modifications! :damn: :damn: :damn:

SH3 Commander allows you to edit your crew and mission hex. You can promote your crew, give them medals and qualifications. It is totally separate from GW and has no effect on your gameplay (except the crew medals etc). It is a must in my opinion.

I will have to check that out. I read the postings on CH commander 2.6 at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=95448 but the additions listed sounded nice but not necessary. Is there more to CH3 Commander than is listed in the write up?

All i had played before i started to use GW was just plain Stock SH3.
Now with GW it could take me a whole day real time to get out of port and i would still be happy as the is so much to take in with the harbour traffic. I alway seem to spot something different everytime i leave port.
Long live the GW MOD:up:

Thanks for the link!
Since it appears that I am completely behind the times here, I have yet another nub question. What order do I use to load the mods
SH3 v.4
SH3 Commander
TGW
Or can the TGW be loaded prior to the CH3 Commander?
Nublet minds want to know

SH3 V1.4b then install TGW over it.
SH3 Commander is a standalone programme which adds so much to the game.
You can launch SH3 via SH3 commander.

First of all you need SH3 patched up to 1.4 version. SH3 Commander has nothing to do with the SH3 installation (it 'goes' to a different path) so you can install it whenever you like. After you have SH3 v1.4 then you can add GW. I would suggest you add it through the mod enabler. That way if you don't like it (I really doubt it but anyway:p ) you can always remove it without changes to your SH3 v1.4 installation.

Another good thing to do is run thru the Naval Academy b4 installing GW so you have an easier time of getting a good score. :know:

I was going to reply in depth, but danlisa's posting of the readme says it all. SH3 Commander isn't really a mod; it's an external tool which lets you change things at the touch of a button. It has a database which gives you more than a billion possible crew names, it lets you change wave heights and ammo loadouts at the touch of a button, it puts names onto all the ships you sink, it lets you adjust the time compression parameters, it lets you award medals and promotions at your discretion, it even gives your captain's past and future careers. It also randomizes your gramaphone tracks. But there I go again, doing it anyway.
No matter when you load Commander, there will always be some new mod coming along that you'll want to try; so Commander has a button labelled "Rollback SH3 Commander". If you click this button before installing any new mod, it will always work properly, and when Commander starts again it will incorporate the new mod with no problems.
Far from not being all that good, I would call SH3 Commander the single most useful tool in the game. To paraphrase the famous ads: "Don't leave port without it!"

To answer the original question rather than debate sh3 commander.
You can simply take your radioman, sonarman off duty. Then take all your watchcrew except one blue sailor down below, including the officer.
Your sub is now blind as a bat.
Then just sail out of the harbor on time compression and reman the watch stations about 30 km's out.

Thank you, I will give the "bat" strategy a try.
As well as loading up CH3 Commander.

I wouldn't do that in 1944 though. You'll probably end up dead. ;)

Well then, do it submerged at 13m. You subs batteries will easily last 30 km's and without the sonarman, you will get zero contacts and are 100% airplane free.

Thats the ticket!!!! I just take off the watch officer, plot my course out of the harbor and hit the '+' key until I'm free. Remember to put your watch officer back on the tower or you will not hear the 'ship spotted'! I stay on the map page when doing this. Sometimes I like the harbor view and enjoy a ride in. I plot the inbound course and sit in the tower basking in the sun:sunny: thinking of the chicks waiting for our return:yep:
Hm thats wierd, i come out of Whiel...something harbor (2nd Flotilla 1940), and i just plot my course and go ahead, they spot every ship but after a while theres nothing new to spot so they stop, and in the meantime i just smash the + key.
Maybe try getting out periscope depth w/o sonar/radio, but be carefull not to hit a ship or get hit.

FOR ALL WICH WANT TO GET RID OFF THE PLANES
1. Launch the SH3 Editor
2. Make a BACKUP from "Campaign_SCR.mis"
3. Open the Campaign_SCR.mis
4. Search for your harbors (wilhemshaven, lorient an co.)
and just erase the friendly planes in the harbor area and save.
5. Have fun leaving the harbor without nerve-killing "Plane spotted" every 2 minutes
WARNING!
DO NOT CHANGE THE CAMPAIGN FILES DURING A PATROL! IT ILL MESS UP YOUR SAVE FILE!
