ok, here is the deal:

i noticed that the distance at which the sonarman reports first time a sound contact (long range) varies. i made a small test mission for this purpose and placed a C3 cargo 26 km away, and let it travel to my direction. as we all know, the SO starts to hear the contact when it is within 20 km or closer. in my test, the detection time of the sonarman (experienced and qualified) varied between +-17 minutes. the mission started at 00:00. the c3 enetered the 20 km area at 00:23, and the SO best report was 00:27. the worst was 00:44. (i made 30-40 tests). during my first 20 tests, i tried not to change the settings and i always dove to 15, dead stop. although i made no changes, the results were not constant. then i tried to change the depth/move slowly/replace SO by another one (they were 3) hoping to make the SO report the contact sooner but i didnt discovered anything constant. the results seem to change all the time no matter what was the depth/speed/sonarman/time compression.

it seems like the SO detection time is randomized. i dont think it depends on his skills. i tried to use a non qualified SO, and the results were almost the same...

my question: is the SO "first sound detection" random and if so, where in the game files can be this settings found? i tried to change the "contacts.cfg" (Hydrophone already tracking modifier=20 ;[detection probability modifier]), but it seems that this line only sets how quickly the SO will lose the contact.

any suggestions?

I would bet it would be completley random, with sonarman skill playing a factor :know: i KNOW ive seen the settings in one of the cfg files :hmm: could be the ones you edited though
